Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:00):

Okay, so you are from Kansas City, Missouri.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:00:03):

I am. Kansas City, Missouri.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:04):

Okay. Let's do two things. One, kind of hit me with, like, who you are, what you're like, what you're  known for, because you've got some really cool stories to tell. Yeah. We were talking before this about  these really cool people that you're associated with that you don't even think twice about, and the rest of  us are, like, starstruck by. <laugh> So give us kind of like the, the quick rundown and then we'll get into  all the details of it - Okay. Of, like, who you are, what you're doing, and then let's get into, okay, back it  up, let's go to childhood. Okay. Growing up here, and tell us what that was like about, um, growing up  here.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:00:30):

Okay. Well, uh, my name is Courtney Big Court Richardson. Yeah. The second. I'm born and raised here  in Kansas City, Missouri.m. I'm from the 40s. I'm from the faux block. Okay. Um, uh, went to Northeast  High School. That's where I graduated. And I started in the entertainment business as far back as the early  '90s.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:48):

Okay. And,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:00:49):

Uh, I got my first record deal in 1995 with No Limit Records.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:52):

Okay. Uh,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:00:52):

Master P. Uh, we were the first group, my group, my partner and I, Cisco, uh, CCG, we were the first  rappers to bring a gold plaque back to Kansas City. We were the first rappers to do that. Um -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:03):

And let's just real quickly, Master P. Yes. Master P. Like that, that is the name that we were just talking  about. Yes. Like one of the two people in particular that was like - Absolutely. Absolutely. So we'll get  into that later, like how that all came to be, because that's pretty

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:01:13):

Incredible. And so, um, people knew me as Court Dog back in the day - Okay. As a rapper when I still  lived here. Um, and then I moved to LA in the early 2000s and transitioned into, you know, producing  and, uh, different, other different arenas of business. Yeah. And I've been in LA ever since. And so I  worked as, um, as an executive with No Limit Records - mm-hmm. For many years. I worked with  Master P in different capacities. Um, also, and now currently I have one of the most popular podcasts in

the space, Holding Court Podcasts with Revolt TV. Yep. And, um, and I am the founder of OG Network  along with my iconic co-founder Ice Tea.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:53):

Ice Tea.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:01:54):

Ice Tea.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:54):

Amazing. Yes. Love it, love it, love it. Okay. So how does a kid from Kansas City, Missouri - Yes. Make  his way, like, how did this all begin? How did you get into the world of, you know, music or producing or  entertainment? Like, how did that kind of make its journey for you?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:02:09):

Well, the, the short version, I have to give you a condensed version. Um, you know, I was always an  artistic kid. Yeah. You know, I could draw really well. I could write poetry. I used to write my mom  poems. And so I think that, you know, once hip hop emerged in the late '80s, you know, we kind of got  hip to that. Um, that influence came in and I think it was a natural transition to start getting into some type  of written expression. Um - Love

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:34):

That.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:02:35):

And so when in WA, Ghetto Boys, I, I, I was influenced by a lot of the gangster rap. Ironically, the first  gangster rap record I ever heard was 1986, 87, Iced Tea, Squeeze the Trigger. Really? The irony of that.  Yes, the irony. On a

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:51):

Cassette tape?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:02:52):

On a cassette tape. <laugh> The irony of that. Let's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:54):

Date ourselves again.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:02:55):

Yeah,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:56):

Exactly.

Exactly. Uh, so who would've thought, you know, you know, I'm 10, 11 years old that years later I would  be in business with him, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:03):

Did that even cross your mind? Was it like a -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:03:05):

Oh no.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:06):

Maybe someday.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:03:07):

No.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:08):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:03:08):

Not ever. Not ever. And so, um, and so I, I got into doing music in, in high school and, uh, I had a child  really early. So I had my oldest daughter who's the co-host of Holden Core Podcast, Rachel Renee. I had  her when I was 16.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:22):

Okay. And she's very beautiful, by the way. Thank you. Watching

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:03:25):

Her on social media. Thank you. Oh yeah, she's dope. She's dope. Um, so there was a sense of urgency,  you know? And then I had got in trouble with the law. I had went to jail at a young age, you know, just  growing up in the neighborhood. Yeah. As I always say, I was a follower of a destructive culture at the

time.m. Just impresionable, you know, trying to fit in. Yeah. Sure. And so, um, I was like, "Oh, I have to  do something. You know, what, what do I wanna do? " I understood that at a young age. What do I wanna  do? Yeah. What is my passion? So I started getting into music and I don't know. I, you know, I, I'm in the  process of writing a book. And we, uh, and the co-author of my book is Georgetta, um, Foreman, who is  George Foreman's daughter.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:07):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:04:07):

And so we broke down my life in decades. Mm-hmm. You know? And, and, and I'm saying this for a  reason. It's like the 80s was the decade of innocence - mm-hmm. Uh, discovery, imagination, you know?  Yeah. And you're shielded from the world. It was a, you know, it was a way different time. Yeah. Great  time. I wish we could go back to it. Yeah. No kidding. Coming into the '90s, you know, I'm, I'm kinda  discovering myself, not so sheltered from the world. Mm-hmm. You know, now I'm getting to see the

world and experience it for myself. Yeah. Um, so with that being said, um, I always thought outside of  my immediate environment. Mm-hmm.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:46):

You know,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:04:47):

We didn't have social media back then.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:48):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:04:48):

You know, so we had to live vicariously through magazine and through TV and radio. Right. And so I  was just fortunate enough that, uh, you know, a lot of people get stuck in a bubble where they are,  especially from smaller cities. True. And so that's what prompted me to say, "Well, huh, how can I... I  know where I wanna get to. How do I do that? " mm-hmm. So at the time, as you said, CDs and tapes -  Yep. Um, they used to, the record labels used to have addresses on there. And so I, I came up with an idea  to do demo tapes and mail cassettes to these places.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:22):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:05:22):

Now, n- nobody taught me about, uh, a press kit. Nobody taught me about what, uh, you know, what is  that, right? But at 16, 17 years old, something told me, "Okay, they probably need to know who we are or  something about us." So I used to hand write bios, you know? And I always excelled in writing and  literature.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:41):

Yeah. So

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:05:42):

I, I, I indented everything, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:44):

Yeah. Just

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:05:44):

Proper grammar. So

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:45):

You were able to make an impression with that? Yeah, I

Was. In cursive, you know, on notebook paper. This, this, yeah, this wasn't even typed, right? Yeah. And  so I'm like, "Yes, my name is Court Dogg, and I'm a rapper from Kansas City. Woo, woo, woo." Yeah.  And I had to do the edit. So I did this - And

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:59):

Then you snail mail it? Yes. You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:06:00):

Gotta

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:00):

Wait

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:06:01):

For it to get there. Yes. Put it in a package. Yes. And snail mail it. Exactly. But I started getting those  packages backed, back. Um, return, uh, we do not accept unsolicited material. Oh. 'Cause I'm sending  them to major record labels. I don't know this verbiage. I don't know what that is. Sure. So I, so again,

you know, I'm like, huh, well, what do I do? Mm-hmm. So, you know, in, in the '90s, you had the  independent record label explosion.m. So I just though, well, they seem a little smaller, a little more  accessible. Mm-hmm. So I start sending tapes to those addresses. And Master P happened to have a  phone number on the back of his tape.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:37):

Oh my gosh. I said, ooh. Seemingly never happened today. Right. I

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:06:40):

Said, ooh, I got action. Yeah. So I called a phone number, but it's a voicemail. No problem. 'Cause I had a  plan for that. So what I did was I called, call, call, call. I used to fill up the voicemail on purpose so no  one else could leave.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:52):

Oh, that's funny.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:06:53):

So no one else could leave. Art strategy. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:55):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:06:55):

And so it worked. Uh, he got tired of hearing my voice on the voicemail and he was like, "Man, this dude  gotta be serious." Now

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:03):

Was he in LA or New York?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:07:04):

No, he was in the Bay Area at that time.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:05):

Bay Area, okay. Yeah. Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:07:07):

And, um, Mr. Servo, who's one of his artists, who's my No Limit brother, he went and got the tape,  listened to it, told P, "Hey man, I think these guys from Kansas City got something." So P called my  house. I didn't believe it was him at first. Of course. And, um, and it went from there. He flew us out to,  uh, um, the Bay Area. We did Down South Hustlers, which was, it was technically the first double rap  album. Uh-huh. You know? Um, this was prior to Tupac's All Eyes on Me - mm-hmm. Because this was  1995. And it went gold. And so that's how we got the gold plaque, and then it was up from there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:43):

How did you know how to create music for the tape?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:07:46):

Um, so that was my partner, Cisco. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:48):

So

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:07:48):

My partner, Tyrone Sisko, he was our, he was the creative force. Okay. I was the business mind. I was the  person -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:55):

Got

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:07:56):

It. To get out and talk to people and, and, you know, he, and he, we knew our lanes as kids.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:00):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:08:00):

He knew. He said, "Listen, you don't want me to talk to them people because I'ma mess it up." Yeah. You  know, so I'm in the studio. Well, there it works for you. Yeah. I'll make the beats. I'll mix it. I'll  conceptualize and do all of that. So he was the brainchild of all the, the music at the, you know, at the  early stages.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:15):

Did you, do you think you just had, like, an innate understanding of how to do this? Or did you learn this  through family or neighbors or anybody around you? No, it was,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:08:23):

It was, it was innate. It was intrinsic. I, I, that... And I think that's why I have a l - I have less patience -  mm-hmm. With people nowadays that say they wanna do things. Yeah. Because we're in such a  informationally rich society now. Yeah. And, and I knew... I'm in Kansas City. I had, I, I have no  reference point of how to do this. I don't know anyone in music.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:46):

Right. I

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:08:46):

Don't have any... I'm... It's just imagination.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:49):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:08:50):

You know, and a belief that I could do it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:51):

Yep.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:08:52):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:52):

Yeah. See, okay. All right. So then what, so what happened from there? Did you end up staying in Kansas  City for a while? Or, like, at what point did you then move out to LA?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:02):

So, um, so at that point - In the Bay Area. We recorded a, a, a full album with No Limit called 100%  Game, right? Okay. So I have a, a interesting history with No Limit.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:13):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:14):

Um, so I was there before the explosion. Mm-hmm. The explosion happened about 97, 98, 99.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:22):

And the explosion, just for context, what included included who?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:26):

When, when, excuse me, when No Limit blew up.

Oh, okay. No Limit in particular.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:30):

So I, I got, I got When No Limit right when it was, it was still bubbling a little bit, but they hadn't quite  reached there, you know? Got it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:37):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:38):

Um, so with that being said, we did an album called 100% Game. It's on the inside of Down South  Hustlers. Uh, we recorded it and everything. Now, we had a manager at the time. Mm-hmm. Okay. No  shade to him. He was, we're 17, 18 years old. He's probably mid, late 20s.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:56):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:56):

He really doesn't know what he's doing. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:58):

But he

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:09:58):

Knows more than us. Right. You know? So, um, the irony of this is him and my partner, they were a little  more tight. Mm-hmm. They kinda connected. And me and P connected. Mm-hmm. Well, my partner and  P really didn't connect.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:15):

I see.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:10:16):

It didn't, they didn't really like each other. And then me and the manager, we were cordial - Yeah. But I  didn't really connect with him like he did.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:23):

You maybe could start to see the writing on the wall - Oh yeah. This is gonna go. Oh,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:10:27):

Oh, it started going left. Yeah. Mm-hmm. So now the manager is, you know, he's coming at P a certain  type of way and it, so it just didn't work out, right? Yeah. It didn't work out. But I kept the relationship,  obviously. So I come back to Kansas City. Okay. And I started independent label.

And I start putting out independent records.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:43):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:10:44):

So that's, so I did that in the late '90s. This is why Kansas City would know me as court dogs. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:48):

So they

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:10:48):

Remember the Kansas City Chief pulling ranks, CCG only game in town, all of that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:52):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:10:53):

But you have to remember, I'm, I'm set, I'm 18, 19 years old and I'm able to front thousands of dollars for,  you know, uh, manufacturing, studio time, you know.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:04):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:11:04):

Uh, I'm learning distribution.m. Um, dealing with one stops, one sheets, all of this different thing by,  before I'm 20 years old.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:12):

How many other people in KC were doing something similar that you could like tap into? Or what did it  look like then? Or did you feel like I'm on an island here? I, I have a special kind of like gift or skill or  interest and I'm gonna just kind of figure this out?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:11:24):

No, I definitely wasn't the only one.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:31):

But

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:11:31):

It was only a handful of us. I mean, there were people, of course, like Rich DeFactor. Uh, he went to the  Bay and got with JT the bigger figure. Of course you had the Popper, um, Money G, um, uh, Vel Bacardi  was the first rapper from Kansas City to actually sign a major record deal. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:48):

And this

Um, which is my own problem, but I learned about him and  obviously know a lot about him now. Mm-hmm. But like how, what year did he start? And how long has  he been doing it?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:12:07):

Um, tech started in the 80s. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:10):

Uh, he was more of a dancer. And then he started rapping probably mid, late 80s.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:20):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:12:20):

Um, and Tech was always, uh, super talented, uber talented. Um, he, you know, Tech, he paid his dues,  you know. The early '90s, he, he really, you know, he had a lot of false starts, you know, he had, he had  deals that fell through where it looked like it was about to happen and it just didn't. Yeah. Um, you know,  and you know, he finally got his, his, his motion with Travis. O'Gwen, shout out to Travis.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:45):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:12:45):

It's strange. Um, so yeah, Tech has done, what he's done is, is phenomenal. Hi- him and Travis. Mm hmm. Uh, I love what they've built, uh, here, right here in the city.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:55):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:12:55):

They've been the only people to be able to do it,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:58):

You know? Interesting. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Speaking of that, so Tech not, are you guys, like, are you guys  buddies? Yes. He was on your podcast. Yes. Right. Okay. So let's talk about your podcast.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:13:07):

Yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:13:07):

How did you get that started? That's been what? Three, four years?

And I always say it started many years before I understood. Um, my senior year in Northeast, I'm barely  graduating, right? Mm-hmm. Not because I wasn't smart, but because I had just been BS-ing, you know,  all my high school years. Like many do. Yeah, right. <laugh> And so now the 12th grade year, I wanna

buckle down and get it together. Right. You know? Yeah. So, um, um, so I'm in senior English and my  teacher, Mr. Connor at Northeast, we had to write a paper and we had to get up and read the paper. Mm hmm. And so now it's the mid '90s. So I'm dressed in my, you know, um, uh, traditional gang garb  <laugh>, you know, starter coat. Oh, yeah. Hot, hot top fade. Uh, you know, Cortez is, uh, you know.  Amazing. So that's what it was then. Right, right. So I, you know, I think I'm that, but whatever. <laugh>

(00:14:19):

And so I get up, I read my paper. Mm-hmm. Mr. Connor looks at me and he says, "Richardson?" He said,  "You speak very eloquently." He said, "You should consider public speaking." I got in -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:31):

Had he never heard you speak before? Or did you, you just kind of put on a different presence maybe that  day because you were, you had in your head. I've

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:14:37):

Always excelled at writing -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:39):

And speech.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:41):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:14:41):

But, but again, I'm, my head space is, you know, I'm trying to be tough.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:45):

Yeah. I'm,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:14:45):

I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm trying to dumb it down,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:47):

Right? Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:14:48):

Yeah. 'Cause

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:48):

That's

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:14:48):

What the culture was, right? <laugh> So, and so when he said it, I was like, I kinda got embarrassed, you  know? Really? I'm like, "What? Like, I'm not, I'm not smart like that. Like what you... " Right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:00):

Like what do we do as humans where someone's complimenting you and you try to like flip the script and  be like - Just dumb, just dumb, right? Just dumb,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:07):

Just dumb. So, uh, so anyway, I, I remember him saying that and he would always say that to me. He was  like, "Yeah, you speak very well." He said, "I want you to... " And he would try to push me to think, but  my head wasn't there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:19):

Sure.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:19):

So fast forward, uh, Master P and myself, we do a show called, uh, Doing the Most. Okay. On the  Playboy, uh, it was Playboy Radio.

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:29):

And this was probably 10 years ago, maybe 2016, 17. Okay. And the show was similar to like a Howard  Stern kind of shock jock thing. We had a lot of fun, but he -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:38):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:38):

Said, "Court, come on with me. " And I'm like, "What are we gonna do? " He was like, "Oh, we just  gonna talk, whatever." So anyway, I do that and one of the executives, her name was Tal, she pulled me  to the side and was like, "Hey, you're kinda good at this. "

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:49):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:49):

And she was like, "Would you, would you like your own show?" I was like, "I guess." You know? And

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:54):

You'd never though about it?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:55):

I never thought about it. I was -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:56):

Did you ever listen to podcasts? No. Were you okay? All right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:15:59):

No, not at all. And so she took me over to Dash Radio, which was in Hollywood on Kowanga at that time.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:06):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:16:06):

I think it was DJ Ski. He had a big old facility. Actually, at that time, Dame Dash had a show over there.  Snoop had a show over there. Uh, Crazy Bone had a show over there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:15):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:16:15):

So I did that for about three months. Um, I didn't understand the business part of it and how to monetize  it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:29):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:16:30):

Um, you know, the, the world is shut down. I've watched everything on TV, so now I'm on YouTube.  Mm-hmm. So now I'm watching Vlad TV, I'm watching Gangster Chronicles, you know, um, Drink  Chimps. Now it's, I, I'm, now I'm getting, discovering and getting tapped into

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:44):

This -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:16:44):

Yeah. Podcast culture. Uh-huh. So I'm like, huh? It's like, I might have something to offer in this space.  Uh-huh. Then I start thinking about those past experiences. Yep. And so, um, my -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:55):

And to date, just to be clear - Uh-huh. You were making a living by your craft of producing music?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:17:03):

No, no. Okay. Uh, so, um, I own a portfolio of income properties.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:09):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:17:09):

Yeah. All right. So I own 42 properties here in Kansas City. Oh wow. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:13):

Okay. See, I didn't know that. Yeah. Amazing.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:17:14):

Yeah. So I own properties all over.

I love it. Yes. And so, um, so I was al - you know, almo - I did, I've done okay. Yeah. Um, so this is all  creative. This is not, I did that not chasing the money or anything like that. Sure. So I called my friend  Ken, my brother. Uh-huh. Um, Ken and I would have these conversations. Like you ever have a friend

where you call, it could be something simple you wanna, but you end up on the phone for an hour - Oh, of  course. Talking about stuff. So we would always find ourselves talking about '90s rap music, stuff we  grew up on. Man, remember this album? So anyway, I call him and say, "Hey, man we should do a  podcast where we just talk about the stuff that we grew up on. "

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:55):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:17:55):

You know, we -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:56):

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:17:57):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:02):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:18:03):

And so everything was slow. Mm-hmm. He was like, "Hey, man, we ain't doing nothing over here. We  got a whole facility that we can set it up and let's just do it. " <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:11):

relationships since I've been in LA. People like me and they show up for me. So I just went through my  phone and just said, "Hey, you know, you, I'm doing this. You want to come?" Now I had never put an  episode out. Okay. So I, I, I'm really blessed the fact that these people showed up without any proof of  concept just based on my word and our relationship.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:44):

Well, and I know you've got three kids that are grown. Yes. My kids are young. But I swear to you, I tell  them, I do not care if you learn cursive. Yes. I do not care if you learn math without a calculator. Right.  But learn the power of relationships - Yes. And networking and the people that you know and how you  can help each other move forward. Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, there is nothing more powerful, and  that's exactly what you're talking about. That's the cornerstone. And people need to really understand that  that, that is like the cornerstone. Yeah,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:19:08):

You said it best. That is the cornerstone. Yeah. You have to relationships. Um, and I think it's just being  someone of integrity. Um - Yeah, integrity. Being a person of your word. Yeah. And, and keeping your  face clean. I mean, keeping your reputation intact. Mm-hmm. So, um, and that doesn't mean perfection,  right? Right. But it just means at least try to be decent.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:26):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:19:27):

Um, and so I, I, I went through my Rolodex and of course I called all my close friends, Masterpiece, Silk  the Shocker, X-rated, um, Jay Prince from Rap A Lot. Uh-huh. It just so happens that a lot of my friends  are moguls and big people.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:41):

Yeah. And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:19:42):

They all showed up,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:43):

You know?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:19:44):

Yep. And so that got me traction, uh, very fast. Yeah. And, and, but it wasn't just the, the, the celebrity.  Right. It was the skillset that I didn't realize I had. Mm-hmm. You know, and people would point that out.  And of course I refined it as, as I got, as, you know, the more I, I, I did it. But -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:20:03):

And when you say skillset, what does that mean to you? Yes. Like in this medium? You didn't know that  you had it.

Well, I think in terms of being able to create a compelling conversation and move the conversation along  organically. Yeah. Uh, ask the questions and still be tasteful, right? Sure. And you can still confront, um,  controversial topics, but it's all in how you couch it. Yeah. Um, I've kind of branded my podcast because I  do have a lot of celebrities as a safe place.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:20:31):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:20:32):

Meaning that, you know, I'm not gonna sneak you. I'm not here to do all the salacious, messy stuff. That's  not even who I am in real

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:20:37):

Life. Like click age. No, no, no, no.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:20:39):

No, because I understand life is real. Yeah. And at some point you have to log off and you have to get off  all this and go live a real life. Yeah. And two mountains won't meet, but two men will. Mm-hmm. So  you'd get on here and say something crazy and then real life will creep up on you, you know? Yeah.  Yeah. Um, so and then I also, and then there are influences as, as I backtracked it. You know, I grew up  watching 60 Minutes, um -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:04):

Connecting the dots.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:21:04):

Connecting the dots. Looking back, yes. Yes. And I'm like, okay. I was always fascinated by Barbara  Walters and 60 Minutes and Arsenio, but I watched it differently than everybody else did. Yeah. Um, so I  think it was those influences, uh,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:18):

That - So fascinating. Yeah. I'm just picturing you as like a 14-year-old kid watching Barbara Walters.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:21:22):

Absolutely.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:23):

Love it. And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:21:23):

Even before that,

Barbara Walters.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:27):

And,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:21:27):

Uh, what was, what was, what was the cat with the, uh, shoulders? Uh, King. Larry King.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:32):

Oh yeah.m. You know, he would sit

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:21:32):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:33):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:37):

And I

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:21:37):

Didn't realize what I was kind of taking in and learning at that time.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:41):

That's really interesting because I think about, I mean, everything that you're saying clearly resonates with  me - mm-hmm. Because I'm a podcastist as well. And I remember, um, I mean, it's so funny to think  back, like, I was fairly introverted as kid. Mm-hmm. And now to think like I'm hosting a podcast where  I'm leading the conversation. Yes. But I learned over the last probably, you know, eight to 10 years that  my strength or my superpower was bringing people in and making them feel comfortable - Yes. And  bringing great stories out of them, you know? Yes, exactly. And so I hear everything that you're saying  and I d - obviously not everyone has that same skillset. Right, right. But to have people that can do it, but  also really wanna do it - mm-hmm. Like I have the best time doing this and meeting new people and  hearing the stories.

(00:22:22):

Like it's so cool that we can bring people together. Yes. The Elena Pages of the world and pull these  things out where people can - mm-hmm. They're gonna listen to you, you know, of course, and find

something that they're gonna run with because they learn it from you. Right. And, and I, now I'm thinking  back too, I'm like, well, maybe it's because I watched, you know, Oprah Winfrey and - For sure. Donahue  and all the people, you know? Yeah. The Jenny Jones show, whatever it was. Man,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:22:42):

We take these things in our spirits and in our minds and our psyche. Yeah. And so I, I think that that lend,  lended to, you know, me being able to grow in this space. Yeah. Um, and I, and then a- a- again, I always  kinda had a knack for speaking. And, and you know what really gave me the confidence one time when  X-rated, who is a artist at Strange. Mm-hmm. Um, he's a, a friend of mine, a close friend of mine. He had  just got out of, excuse me, got out of prison. He had did like 26 years.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:12):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:23:12):

And so he flew out to LA to come sit down with me. And, uh, he would, he had one of his business  associates who, he was an older gentleman with an English accent.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:21):

Okay. White,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:23:22):

White guy.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:22):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:23:23):

He sat there the whole two and a half hours and watched us live off, off camera. And as soon as we got  done, he came over to me and he said, "Wow." He said, "Man." And he's the first one that told me, he  said, "You're really good at this. " He said, "I was engaged the whole time." And so he was explaining to  me these things, but the X-rated might've been like my third interview. Right. So I'm taking it in, you  know, like, okay, uh, it's clicking, you know. Um - You're

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:47):

Taking it in and he's taken with you. Yes. Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:23:50):

Yeah. And the fact that, the fact that he is, you know, quote unquote, outside of the culture of  conversation we're having -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:56):

Yep.

You know, but he was still super engaged, you know? And, um, so that gave me a level of confidence. I  was like, okay. And so then quickly, you know, I, I, I, I've went viral so many times - mm-hmm. You  know, just off of great conversation, you know? Yeah. Um, and people have taken note in the industry.  Uh, you know, at this point, celebrities and their teams reach out to me - Yeah. You know, and put me,  "Hey, we're trying to come. We're trying to come. Can we book?" You know? But I think it's them  realizing that, "Oh, wow, this guy's really doing the work." Mm-hmm. Like he, you know, I'm prepared,  you know.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:31):

People do not know how much goes into a podcast. No, they don't. They don't. I've had, I just had this  conversation yesterday with someone who was like, "Man, I was gonna start a podcast. I did not realize  what it entailed. So I didn't start it. And I'm like, it's a lot. Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:24:43):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:47):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:24:48):

That's why I tell people, you have to love what you do. Mm-hmm. You know, you can't chase money.  You have to, you know -

Yeah. You have

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:24:54):

The, the, the, the more you try to chase that, you know, it's gonna get away from you.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:02):

What's so tough about the, like, you have to love what you do is if I'm being honest, like, I just turned 47.  Okay. I worked in the corporate world for 25 plus years, whatever it was. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Did I love all  of those years? No. No. Yeah. But then you have to find that balance of, like, you have to find a means to  an end - Of course. To support your lifestyle - Absolutely. Support all your, you know - mm-hmm.

Everything that you have going on. But the minute you can find that thing that you love - mm-hmm. Run  with it. Run with it. It will work itself out. Definitely. Um, I have a friend who is potentially going  through a layoff here through an acquisition. Mm-hmm. And we just talked yesterday. And, you know,  there's a lot of fear. Mm-hmm. And I'm like, "Trust me from leaving the corporate world a year ago."  Mm-hmm.

(00:25:46):

"You will figure it out. " Yes. You will find a way it will work itself out. Don't worry about it. If you love  it, if you're driven, if you're, you know, smart about it. Yeah. If you work with the people around you that  can help you. Exactly. So I just, I think that's always the tough thing for me to be like, "But not everybody  can do what they love because they can't get their way in, but you will get, you can get there."

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:26:04):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:26:04):

Just be patient.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:26:05):

You have to lean into being uncomfortable.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:26:07):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:26:07):

You know, that's where growth happens. Most people, they, you know, they let life live them. Yeah. You  know, and the circumstances - So true. They just go with it. Mm-hmm. I was never like that. Mm-hmm. I  was always an outlier. You know, I'm gonna do it my way. Yeah. And, you know, of course, and I don't  wanna sit here like I've just been super poised and, and everything has been perfect. Sure. There have  been times where I, I just don't know how to give up, right? But I'm like, what, what do I go back to?  'Cause I've swam so far out. Yeah. Yeah. When I look back, I don't have, I don't have anything to go back  to, so I don't have a choice, but to keep going. Well,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:26:39):

And even if you did, you might not have any interest in going back to what it was. Oh

You know, my wife and I, we've, we've had this conversation and I said, "You know what? I could've  played it safe." Mm-hmm. You know, uh, she works in the medical field, you know, she could've did her  practice here in Kansas City. We're both from Kansas City. I could have, you know, went to college or  got a decent job somewhere, been a professional. You know, we

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:27:05):

Could have

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:27:05):

Got our house in Raytown or wherever. Yeah. You know, and just settled into it, but it would have been  comfortable. M - But my heart and mind would have been somewhere else about the possibilities of what  I've come to do. Yeah. And what I've been doing. Yeah. You know? And you know, I, I think some of  this is being, you know, I always say you live life long enough it'll teach you how to live, right?

Like that. And, and so meaning that, you know, you have to learn how to be appreciative of where you are  in the journey. 'Cause a lot of times we're so preoccupied with trying to get there to the next thing. Like  where's there? Yeah. You know, where's there? Where is there? We're looking

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:27:41):

Into the future too much for like present day. Exactly. Capitalize on what you can today.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:27:45):

And I'm saying that to say that, you know, I, I said to myself one day, like, where's there? Because from  the, from the space of me being a kid in Kansas City, everything that I dreamed of from that space has  come to fruition. Mm-hmm. You know, um, but of course there are le - there's levels, right? Yeah. Um,  so, but I'm like, where's there? 'Cause the thing is, is if I never make it to wherever there is -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:08):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:28:09):

Man, listen, I've had a hell of a journey.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:11):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:28:11):

I have, I have, you know, I've had the respect of some of the most amazing influential people.

I've

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:25):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:28:26):

I, I've had all the accoutrements of the success of there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:29):

I love that. If

I don't even make it there. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:31):

You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:28:32):

Know, so.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:32):

I, I love that because I, I have this motto of every day is on my bucket list. Yeah. And I wanna learn  something new, do something new. And really what that is, is like, live in the present moment. Yes. Stop  looking in the past. Mm-hmm. Don't look ahead too far. I mean, there, of course, you have to plan and  things like that. Of course. But I think, like, you know, we all know the world is moving at this, like,  breakneck pace - Yes. Of, like, technology and all the different things. And did I know when I was 14  years old that I wanted to grow up and be a podcast host? Right. No, that wasn't even a, a thing. No.  <laugh> It was not even a title, a position. And so I think, like, we can get too caught up in the world of,  um, I wanna get there - Yeah.

(00:29:09):

When you might have zero actual idea of what there is. That's a fact. Because the world is changing so  much that, like, no one was talking about AI the way that we are - Of course. Five, six, seven years ago.  So, like, just be doing as much as you can here -

No, that's a, that's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:29:26):

A fact.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:29:26):

You know? And I wake up every day. I'm s -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:29:28):

And who you're gonna meet along the way. And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:29:30):

Who you're gonna meet along the way. Yeah. 'Cause it's really about how you make people feel. Yeah.  You know, people remember how you made them feel. Exactly. Um, and, you know, that's, like I say, you  live a life long enough to teach you how to live.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:29:40):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:29:40):

And so I've gotten to a space in life, man, I tell you, I wake up every day and I'm so fortunate. You know,  of course, no one is, you know, um, uh, exempt from issues of life, right? Right. Um, and I consider  myself very good at preventing, you know, uh, self-inflicted problems. Sure. But like 'Cause I always go  to life. No matter what the economic backdrop is, no, it don't matter. Right. Life don't care about none of  that. Right. So, but with that being said, I wake up every day very, very grateful that I'm able to do what I  love. Mm-hmm. It's just as simple as that, you know.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:30:14):

And I believe that to have that kind of gratitude and that kind of outlook on life will, and to do a lot of  great things for other people - Yes. Is going to of course come back and serve you well. Exactly. And I  think it's easy to overlook that for people. No. And it sounds so basic. Yeah. Um, you know, I, I've, I've  lost friends, family, you know, things like that. And I think as I've gotten older, I've discovered I'm  probably an empath. I feel everything. Yeah. I take everything in. And with that being said, I, which at the  same time has made me developed my, uh, my armor.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:30:59):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:30:59):

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:31:05):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:31:11):

Feels very peaceful as you're talking about it.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:31:13):

Yeah, yes. I protect my peace. Yeah. You know, I, I don't expect too much from whatever. I allow things  to flow, you know? Mm-hmm. Okay, that's who you wanna be. Let me respect who you wanna be. Yeah.  'Cause I want people to respect who I wanna be. Yeah. It may not align with me. That's okay. And I  understand it's not about me. It's you. Yeah. And now I have, I can't control you, but I can control me and  what I'm exposed myself to. So

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:31:35):

I - Maybe if we like read the same books or something. <laugh> 'Cause I learned, um, actually after  moving to Kansas City - mm-hmm. There was a moment in time where I learned to stop having  expectations - Yes. In many different areas of life. Yes. I realized my expectations were setting me up for  failure, disappointment. Of course. And once I made that switch in my mind - mm-hmm. It changed so  much for me. Absolutely. And I think that, but it took, it took me many adult years to get to that point, but  I got there and it changed everything. When you have a life long

And, and so again, that, exactly, because I'm gonna tell you what that's about. Mm-hmm. What that comes  back to is acceptance. Yeah. A lot of times our lack of acceptance of things, you know, robs us of our  peace. We wanna know why. We wanna explanation or we wanna hold people to a standard. You know,

Complicated - So we struggle. Yeah. We complicate it. That's a better way to put it.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:32:54):

Yeah. You know, it's like, okay, you meet people where they are, you know? Yeah. And, and then it's  really not fair to you or the other person to impose your expectations on them. Right, right. You know?  Mm-hmm. They may not have it to give. Yeah. You know? And sure, we want everybody to go. We want  to hold people's feet to the fire, especially if we love them. Yeah. But that acceptance of, you know what?  Rather you my child, my brother, my sister, that's just who you are.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:16):

That's true.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:33:17):

So I gotta operate from that space.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:18):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:33:19):

And I can pray that you get better, but if you don't, uh, just operate where we are.

Yeah. And then we go on from there. Then we go

On from there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:24):

Well, speaking of expectations, um, before we move on to the OG network - Yeah. 'Cause this is, there's  so much to talk about with that. But, um, Holding Court, I don't even know if we said the name obviously  of the podcast. Holding Court Podcast, yes. Hence, um, a playoff of your name. Yes. Um, but what are  your expectations now that you've done this for six years? Yeah. Where do you wanna take it? What do  you wanna do with it from here?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:33:44):

Um, well, now that I, I'm, I'm shooed, I'm immersed in the media space at this point. Yeah. Um, and I  love it. Uh, I, I wanna take Holding Court specifically and, and scale it into a, a live show - Oh. With,  with the audience.

Be in LA. It'd be in LA. I've had opportunities to do the live thing. Yeah. Um, uh, I had, my first  opportunity was in Chicago. Um, I'm open to that. Mm-hmm. But when I say live, like, like how we were  saying with Oprah and Donahue and whatnot.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:15):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:34:15):

Um, I really wanna scale it to that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:18):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:34:18):

Um, so that's in terms of holding court, but, you know, I'm in this media space with OG Network. Yeah.  And, and to, and I hate to say it, to some degree. I mean, Holden Court is my baby, you know, and, and  it's, I'm always gonna do it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:33):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:34:33):

Uh, but, you know, OG Network is kinda taking precedence. <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:36):

I know. Let's talk all about that because I was doing a deep dive on this. Yeah. And, um, yeah. Okay. So  tell us what OG Network is.

Yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:45):

And then...

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:34:46):

So OG Network is a, um, we're what you call a OTT platform. Mm-hmm. Over the top platform,  streaming, uh, app similar to Tubi, Netflix, um, you know, Amazon Prime.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:58):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:34:59):

And so, um, but no, I, I, I, I, I wanna... I always try to communicate that even though we're Black, okay,  we're not a Black network. We're inclusive.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:35:47):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:35:48):

It's for creators

Over.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:35:50):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:35:50):

You know, now, of course, yes, we wanna look out for people in the culture, the urban culture. And that  doesn't even necessarily just, just, you know, just black, right? Okay. Um, and the reason being is  because, you know, uh, me working with Master P for many years -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:06):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:36:06):

He always said, "In order to create a good business, find a solution to a problem."

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:10):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:36:10):

So being in this creative space, I was like, "Okay. I kinda see a problem. I see the UPN, I see CW, the  CW. Um, I see even Tubi, what they're doing once they got acquired by Fox. You know, they use a lot of,  um, I'm gonna say urban black content. Mm-hmm. They use, they, they, they, you know, use it, they get  the valuation, and then they move the goalpost. Mm. It's kinda like they discard of them. And so I'm never  mad at w- what someone does with their business and how they scale. But I understand they don't bear the  burden of culture, right? Right. Or creators. It's just business to them.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:47):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:38:08):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:38:08):

So what we did was I targeted our existing ecosystems. Yep. And then not to even mention that we did a  press run. We did the Sherry Shepherd Show. Mm-hmm. We did the Breakfast Club. We did our sh - our  Fair Share Media. And it just shows that the culture was, they were ready for something like that. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:38:24):

You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:38:24):

Know, and a lot of people are looking at us as a good Tubi, um, alternative -

Okay. Uh,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:38:29):

In terms of putting their content and watching their content. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:38:32):

Wa- was there like a... So going back to maybe, like, the comparison with Tubi - Yes. Was there a  moment where you went, light bulb, whoa, we need to fill this void. We need to solve this problem. Of  course. And what exactly was that moment?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:38:43):

Um, it was when I start, um, you know, seeing a lot of content creators, uh, being kinda disparaged and,  and, and, um, discarded. Mm-hmm. Because they're, the... In, in all fairness, Tubi, I mean, they have  almost 300,000 titles. Yeah. So their ingestion process is, you know, six months out. Mm-hmm. You  know, so you're in queue for three, four, five, six months.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:39:08):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:39:08):

And then what happened was they stopped taking the, the really rough movies, you know? Yeah. Which  is what really built them up. Okay. And so now they, the, the barrier to entry, they were like, "Okay, we're  with Fox now. We're not really doing that anymore." Mm. You know? And so that cut out a lot of people.  I see. So now they want you to shoot in 6K. They want you to, you know, have six figure budgets when,

That, there you -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:10):

Who knows what the people want? You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:40:11):

Hit the nail on the head. Yeah. And so things are changed. So just like in the music industry, right? Yeah.  You know, the, the, the record labels have more or less become obsolete, right? You can be a creator and  go right to your public, go right to your, your fan base. And so, uh, kind of a page that I took out of Tyler  Perry, that's what he said. He said, "Hey, listen. I don't create movies to compete with Hollywood

standards or whatever. I have an audience. I know what they like. I know who they are and I super serve  that niche."

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:38):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:40:39):

So you find -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:40):

I think that's worked pretty well for me.

Exactly. So you find your people.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:43):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:40:43):

And so when I learned that, I'm like, "Okay, there is an audience of people who like these type of  movies," you know? Yeah. And so there was really not many other places that they could get that from.  Mm-hmm. And so I also thought that, you know, again, presenting the opportunity, because now it ties  into what we said about life. Yeah. You know, it's like, at the end of your life, what have you contributed  to the human experience? Mm-hmm. You know, who have you helped? Yeah. You know, you know, so I  wanna be able to give people opportunities like I was given opportunities. Mm-hmm. Um, so that was  really the, the defining factor right there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:16):

Yeah. And then how did you decide to go to Ice Tea - Yeah. Versus anybody else? Right. Like how, what  did that pitch go, or conversation go like? That's

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:41:23):

A great question. Um, so of course my relationship with P, people automatically thought, why didn't you  do it with P?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:28):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:41:29):

Well, I knew P was in a different space. Mm-hmm. Okay. He, he was focused on, you know, his  basketball coaching and his philanthropy. Okay. Uh, so he wasn't really in a, in the entertainment space. I  prayed on it. Mm-hmm. And I just though about, like, because I know a lot of influential people. Yeah.  But it, it just, it's like God just tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Holler at Ice."

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:48):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:41:49):

You know, so I hit Ice up and, you know, Ice was like, "Hey, court. You know, I love to do it. I love to be  in business with you, " you know? <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:57):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:41:58):

And he was like, you know, I, I don't know. <laugh> Yeah, no. He was like, "I don't have the, the, the, the  bandwidth to really, you know, because I'm doing SVU and all these things." Yeah. He said, "But you're  gonna have to run point on it. " Okay. "But I'd love to do it with you. Just let me know whatever we need  to do. "

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:12):

Amazing. And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:42:12):

So we came in fifty fifty partners and he, and you know, Ice coined the term OG.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:18):

Yeah, I wanted to hear more about that. I heard him on, like, Sherry Shepherd or something talking a little  bit about that, but I wanted to hear you kind of explain it. Yes. Yeah. His,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:42:25):

His, his second, uh, maybe his third album came out in 1991, which was called OG, original gangster.  Okay. And so he coined that term OG. So, you know, we figure, okay, OG, or, uh, classic material.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:38):

Mm-hmm. And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:42:38):

So we built it off of having these old movies that, that, you know, people couldn't get everywhere.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:44):

Yeah. So when you had this idea, was it not a daunting thought to be like, this is something that will  compete with a Netflix? Yes. I mean, what, what was going through your mind? <laugh> Are you just  like, "You know what? I feel it so deep in my soul that this is the, the thing to do. "

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:42:59):

It's a little bit of both. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, I, listen, I was... And then it, you know, for the most part,  I'm a... We're tech founders. Yeah. You know, we're not tech people. Yeah. You know, I use the basic  functions of my phone. I'm not a techie person. But I have had a crash course in tech. Uh-huh. I  understand the creative part of it, the marketing part of it. So, um, yes, it was very daunting. Mm-hmm.  And I knew, but I, I, that's just how I'm wired though. Yeah. I knew that it was something that I could do  because I was passionate about it. Right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:43:31):

And -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:43:31):

Back to

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:43:32):

The passion.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:43:32):

The other part was that seed had been planted again, I have to tell you. Uh-huh. Several years ago, again,  my brother Master P. Yeah. He was doing a linear network called BBTV, Better Black TV. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:43:46):

It

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:43:46):

Was years ago when Comcast, they were mandated to give, um, a few Black owned minor- minority owned networks. Magic Johnson got, uh, Aspire. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:43:56):

Robert

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:43:56):

Rodriguez got El Ray and so forth. Mm-hmm. So P was trying to do Better Black TV. Again, I'm the  homeboy. Yeah. I'm the homie. So he tells me, "Come on, this is what we doing." Okay. So he makes me  like VP. I know nothing. You like, sounds great. You know, right. But I'm okay, I'm with you, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:44:13):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:44:14):

And so it didn't happen, right? It didn't come to fruition, but that planted the seed. Yeah. And so I always  said, "I wanna do that. " mm-hmm. And so I started studying and watching Byron Allen, watching Tyler  Perry, you know, watching, you know, even what 50 Cent was doing with Shreveport. And that's why I  was like, "Okay, I want my own facility. I, I want to, we're disruptive basically to the Hollywood system  because I know what it's like to pitch, to pitch projects, that whole thing. Then audition, audition, and to  getting told no and you audition at that... " And I get it, but you get, you know, you gotta audition 2,000  times to land one role, right? And then, you know, so I was like, "No, we, we're not doing that anymore."  Yeah. You know, so we're the platform. We're the creators. We own the IP.

(00:44:59):

We can help people along the way. Like Byron Allen said, he said, "The reason I run circles around these  major studios is because they'll take a whole year meeting, meeting, meeting, meeting to make one  decision about to green light." He said, "Since then, I done, I have 21st run shows I've done." So much red  tape, right? Yeah. Yeah. And I've been in those situations. So I was like, "We don't have to do that. " So  this is why I said, "No, we gonna boss up. We gonna own the platform. We're gonna create the content.  We're gonna own the IP. We're gonna have our own funding. We're gonna do all that, you know? We're  gonna be aut - as autonomous." And I'm not opposed to working with the machine, but we make the  decisions.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:45:36):

Yeah. Okay. So how does it work? Do people come to the OG network and pitch being a part of the  network? Or like how, who's kind of your target audience of people to be a part of your, um - Yes.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:45:47):

I guess

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:45:48):

The content - Yeah. Or the creator community? Yeah. That

Independent filmmakers. Okay. Um, and yes, they, they usually, they pitch to content@theognetwork.net.  And we deal with, um, uh, we deal with, uh, distributors as well - Okay. And

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:03):

Aggregators.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:46:03):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:04):

Uh,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:46:04):

But yes, content, they, we, I, we get hundreds of submissions a week, you know? Okay. And so I had to  hire a staff. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:11):

It,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:46:11):

It came fast, you know? Yeah. I had to hire staff literally to go through and field the content and, you  know, then get it to me and I pretty much had to train them on what, what we accept and what we don't.  Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:24):

Mm-hmm. And so what does that look like? Like what, how much are you taking on? How much will you  accept? What do you, what kind, uh, like what's the criteria? I guess maybe to know. Oh, the

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:46:32):

Criteria is pretty curiosity. Uh, well, uh, we, we tell, we accept shorts. I've made a place for shorts, for  verticals. Um, as long as it's not too rough, like, right? Okay. You have your idea as long as we don't see  the mic, you know? Like the

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:45):

It doesn't have to be perfect. Like it

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:53):

Would be if I did my podcast at home on my couch, which is why I'm not doing it here.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:46:56):

<laugh> Exactly. 'Cause at the end of the day, content is king. Yeah. Like even with the podcast stuff, let  me tell you. Right. What I learned is I have, I shoot in, in, in, you know, a multimillion dollars play as  you do, right? Really nice set and all of that. Yeah. I know platforms that have no aesthetic - mm-hmm.  That do very well. Yeah. It's true. Because at the end of the day, it's the content. The content. Absolutely.  Yeah. You know, so I look at the same thing when you, you know, look at someone else's creativity,  right? I may look at it and be like, "Yeah, this is garbage. I wouldn't watch it. " But I do know that there's  thousands of people that would like this. Right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:47:30):

I mean, that's what I've learned too. There's an audience for everything. There's an audience for  everything. Find your people. Yes, exactly. You know, and then of course thinking outside the box of  like, well, maybe it wouldn't be for me. Like I, I'm definitely bringing some people on that, um, I'm  dabbling in like the world of, um, the crime junkie podcast that people love. Yes. I don't particularly listen  to them, but I do watch the documentaries. Exactly. But like I'm bringing someone on to talk about like  the Leavenworth Prison. I'm just like, there's an audience for everything. There's an audience for  everything. Dabble in it and figure out what people wanna hear.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:47:57):

Find your people.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:47:57):

Yeah. Um, okay. So I think I, that I read, um, authentic storytelling. Mm-hmm. Is that kind of like a key  component of what you have though about that you want kind of behind the mission of the OG network?  Yes. Can you talk a little bit about that to kind of tie into the content and to tie into, um, sort of that like  content is king and what you guys are looking to -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:48:15):

Well, authentic meaning that it's direct, it's direct from the culture, right? Yeah.

Um,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:48:21):

Some of the stories, you know, how can I say? Okay, for instance, um, I come, I, I, I was born and raised  in Kansas City in that environment, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:32):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:48:33):

So I can see certain things in movies or certain stories being told that I can tell when it's been written or  it's been produced by someone who really doesn't know, you know? Yeah. It's like, no, that wouldn't go  like that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:45):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:48:46):

You know, so it's almost like when they do mafia movies, how sometimes they'll bring on real mafia  people to make sure it's authentic.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:53):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:48:53):

So when you say authentic tel - uh, storytelling, you know, from these different urban stories, whether it's  a love story, whether it's a hood story, whether it's a horror, whatever, whatever, it's directly from the  creator. Because what happens is when you get into the Hollywood machine -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:08):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:49:09):

You can have a great idea, but at the end of the day, the people that put the money up, they're gona have  the final say, right? Yeah. So your vision is your vision, but then they bring in pro- production companies,  they bring in money people, they bring, they have the, you know, they can sign, they, they have the, um,  the right for the final edit. And now it's not so much your visit, your vision.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:32):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:49:32):

Now? Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:49:33):

'Cause now they're bringing in what we know that works, you know? Let's make it like this because this  made so much money. I, that's business.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:41):

Yeah, that's, that's, that's a tricky one. Yeah. That's interesting. Obviously, you know, far more than I do  about that, but I'm like, it's someone's opinion at the end of the day.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:49:48):

Right. And I get it. Yeah. I get it because I always say that I'm probably like 70% suit and 30% creative.  Yeah. So I totally get it, but both things can happen. Yeah. You can still keep it authentic. Just find the  people that like that authenticity. Yeah. Yeah. You know, so, so now everybody can be their own people,  their own bosses. Yeah. The creators, they own their IP. We license it. We don't own it. Okay. You know,  we can help you get to the world. We can help you promote it, market it. You own it. And if you get  traction, do a part too.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:18):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:50:18):

I may think it's garbage, but pr - but obviously there's a sea of people that like it. Right. Right. 'Cause art  is

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:23):

Subjective. We can't please everybody.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:50:25):

Art is subjective.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:26):

So is it, so it's all film to some degree, whether it's like a documentary or fiction - Oh yeah. Or horror or  love. All that kind of covers every category. Yes. Okay, good. Um, I think another thing that I wanted to  ask you when I was researching, um, do you have three pillars? Is that something that you guys built as  part of your mission? Like, um, I was reading about the authentic storytelling - mm-hmm. And then  culture account, cultural accountability.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:50:48):

Yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:48):

Is that something that is worth talking about - Yeah. Of what you guys are doing?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:50:55):

Yeah. Um, cultural accountability mean the representation,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:58):

You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:50:59):

Know? Yeah. Um, sure. You know, we have, we have the hood stories and, you know, the proverbial  hood stuff, right? Uh-huh. But at the same time, you know, um, the black culture and black people are  not, you know, a monolith, you know? Mm-hmm. There are a lot of colors to it. There's a lot of different  things. So now there's, there's black love stories. Yeah. There's, there's black comedies. Uh-huh. There's  black horrors, you know, there's documentaries. And again, so that's when, you know, we're saying that,  okay, it's authentic and - Yeah. You know, I, I, it's the representation. Okay. Yep. You know, not just  wanting to be exploitive. Right. Because this works. Mm-hmm. We understand that, okay, the hood stuff  works. But yeah, but when you bear the burden of culture and you understand that, yeah, it's  entertainment, but at the same time, sometimes it can be a little destructive too.

(00:51:52):

Mm-hmm. 'Cause people who don't know the culture, do you have outsider, people that haven't been  around black people, they're taught how, they're, they, they, all they have is media. Like for me, I, I, we  all have a level of ignorance. Sure. I met someone from, uh, Albania, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:52:06):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:52:06):

And I was like, dang, I never met someone. I said, because in the movies, they always gangsters. <laugh>  Like, you know, Albanians or Russians,

I know it's, I know it's not true, but that's what I've seen, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:52:22):

Yeah. It's like a little bit ingrained because of how long ago you

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:52:25):

Learned it. Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. So it's balance. It's being able to have the power. I have the power to  limit what is shown - Yeah. On OG Network. I can say, okay, we've been inundated with all this hood  stuff. We're only gonna accept this much. Mm-hmm. And then we're gonna balance it with these stories.  Yeah. And we're gonna, you

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:52:43):

See? Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:52:43):

So that's, you gotta have the power.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:52:46):

Speaking of, like, misperceptions - Yes. Is that something that is of, um, interest or importance to you  guys when it comes to the content that you're showing? Are you trying to educate people on anything  about - mm-hmm. Misperceptions culturally - Yeah. Or misperceptions? I mean, you know, anything in  particular. Does that make sense?

I loved all the gangster  stuff. Yeah. But then we also had Kid N Play. Yeah. We also had Dos Effects. We had, you know - Yep.  We had Heavy D, the Fun Records, you know, like, they don't talk about girls and partying no more,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:33):

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:54:20):

Have so much space. And what we're doing is similar to, you know, what Tyler Perry has done, what 50  Cent has done. Even Kat Williams, he's in Aniston, Alabama. Um, so we're really, you know,  empowering ourselves and become autonomous. We have our own equipment, have our own grip trucks,  we have our own cameras. We can -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:54:38):

I mean, you have to be like a kid in a candy store. Yeah. Oh my gosh. And - We can

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:54:40):

Build our sets, everything.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:54:42):

Yeah. And to, like, I think m- maybe before we started recording, I had asked you, like, why not Kansas  City? Obviously, you're here. And, you know, and so for people who are listening that are a part of the  Kansas City Metro, you had an, an opportunity in St. Louis that you could not pass up. Yes.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:54:56):

Right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:54:57):

So,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:54:57):

Which is where - It's the same, it's the same way why 50 Cent is from, uh, Queens, New York. Yeah. But  hi- his, his spot is in Shreveport, right? Yeah. So, you know, you go to where the business is.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:09):

Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:55:09):

You go to where the money is and, and St. Louis, you know, that's, they, they embraced us and, you  know, it landed like that. Mm-hmm. And, and that, who's to say? I may have a spot. I, I do have an  opportunity to do that here. Sure. I can't replicate that here, but, um, but St. Louis is only three hours  away. Yeah. So we're still gonna do a lot of

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:27):

Stories. We love St. Louis too. Absolutely. We're just a little biased over here.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:55:29):

No, that's right. And we're, we're still gonna have a lot of content that bridges St. Louis and Kansas City.  Yeah. Because my production, our head of production, Craig, he's from St. Louis.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:37):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:55:38):

So, yeah. And we, it' still Missouri, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:41):

It's still Missouri. Yeah. Yeah, you're right. Okay. So with the 14,000 square feet, what all is going to be  happening in there? Yeah. Can people come visit you guys and, like, pitch something? Or, like, what's the  deal?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:55:50):

Um, well, no, no, they can't. No, it's not open to the public like that. <laugh> Uh, so please don't come.  Please don' knock on the door. Yeah, you won't get in. Um, uh, at this stage, it's really for us. Um -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:02):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:56:03):

We have a lot of... Excuse me. We have a lot of our own original content that we have slated - mm-hmm.  Uh, right now. So we're not really taking, you know, we don't really need other people's scripts - Yeah.  Treatments or whatnot. Not at this juncture. Uh, I'm sure that will happen down the line. So this will, this  will be housed where we'll build our sets for our sitcoms. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:24):

We have sitcoms, we'll bring it back. We're actually shooting a horror movie called Hospice. We're going  into production at the end of July - Okay. That we'll be shooting there. Uh, we have a Christmas movie  that we're shooting there. And we also have a six-part anthology called Don't Get It Twisted with Ice T  hosting it. So he'll be flying into St. Louis and we're shooting it there as well.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:42):

Amazing.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:56:43):

Um, we have a vertical that we're gonna shoot there. Um - Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:46):

And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:56:46):

By the way, I just shot my first vertical for OG Network, uh, in LA, uh, with me and Kennedy. Uh, it's  called, uh, The Assassin Family. Uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:55):

Can you explain what a vertical is for people

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:56:57):

Who might be able to be? A vertical, a, a vertical, uh, drama series is basically shot in nine by 16. The f -  the, the camera is shot vertical for your phone. Perfect. So it's primarily targeting the phone. Yeah. Okay.  And then they're short stories. Mm-hmm. So they're three minutes, you know, five minutes or less. Yeah.  Uh, we did 10 episodes. It's called The Assassin Family Stars, uh, myself and, um, Latoya Ward. And

she, she's a big influencer. She has like two million followers on Facebook. Love it. Uh, she plays my  wife. Okay. And we have a daughter, uh, that's 18. Uh-huh. And we cosplay as a regular family, but we're  contract killers, you know?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:57:33):

Amazing.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:57:33):

Yeah. Okay. Even the daughter. Sign me up. The 18-year-old. Oh, she's on it too. Yes, we taught. We  trained her. <laugh> Oh, good. Yeah. And we cosplay as, you know, the Cosbys, but,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:57:43):

You know - Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:57:43):

Yeah.

On TV.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:35):

I just read that.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:59:36):

Yeah. I was like, I

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:36):

Forgot.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:59:36):

And it's so funny because what people don't understand about Ice is you have Ice T the actor, you have  Ice T the Rapper. Mm-hmm. But then you have Ice T with Body Count, the rock group. Body County just  won a Grammy the year before last. Amazing.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:51):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:59:51):

Body Count.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:52):

I know. I feel like a lot of people wouldn't know about that. No,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:59:53):

That's what I'm saying.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:54):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (00:59:54):

So, so it's like the urban culture, they may not, they're looking at Ice T of Old, the rapper.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:59):

Yeah. You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:00:00):

Oh, and they're like, okay, yeah, we respect Ice, but Ice is very relevant. Ice still tours overseas and does  sea, a sea of people, festivals with thousands of people out there knowing every lyric with body count. So,  you know, you, this is someone who's iconic in not only music and TV but rock, rap and all of that. So  he's dropping, uh, Criminal Migraine, uh, which will be his first rap record in it's been some years. It's  been maybe several years. Um, so a lot of the Ice T fans are really, really excited about that.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:00:35):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:36):

How does he get it all done?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:00:37):

Yeah. It's incredible. You know what? It's the same with P. We're all disciplined, you know? Yeah. Um,  it's not a whole, you, you, it, it's just what you do. Yeah. It's your job, right? Just like many people - You  don't

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:47):

Even think about it. You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:00:47):

Don't even think about it. Yeah. People wonder how I get everything done. They're like, "Okay, you got  the network, you got the podcast, you got other businesses. You do a bunch of media." I'm like, "Well,  I'm disciplined and I'm organized."

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:58):

Yeah. I, I'm trained to come from this like Monday through Friday nine to five world - Yeah. Up until I  left a year ago. Yeah. And, um, our nine-year-old had a friend over the other day on Saturday - mm-hmm.  Of last weekend and they wanted to play and one of them, like, asked me to do something to play with  him or whatever. And my nine-year-old daughter was like, "Nope, she's working." Yeah. And I kinda  laughed to myself because it was like 1: PM on Saturday and I'm like, "I am." Yeah. I mean, it's like, I  don't live in that world anymore. Right. To me, it's like I will do it. Of course, I prioritize my family. Yes,  of course. And I'm with my kids and everything, but at the same time I'm like, "It doesn't matter what day  it is. Like if you love what you're doing and you need to get it done, you're gonna get it done at whatever  time.

(01:01:31):

Okay, people all,  including myself, uh, maybe it's just for me, but love a good, love the celebrity stories. Yes. Can you tell  us some fun stories about like Master P and Ice Tea, your friendship, any fun shenanigans you guys have  gotten into? Like things maybe we wouldn't know about them because we literally see them through a

Man, you know, I've known P for 30 years and, uh, the stories that I would say were funny, I probably  shouldn't even repeat.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:08):

That's fair. <laugh> We'll talk offline about that.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:02:11):

Yeah, yeah. Um, I, I, you know, um,

(01:02:17):

I, I, I don't, you know, I've never lived the rock star lifestyle. We've never done that, you know? Yeah.  Uh, none of, you know, my crew, me, P, and our close friends, we don't smoke, we don't drink, we don't  party. Uh, we're really family people. Yeah. You know? Um, so we, we, we've kind of been able to avoid  certain things. Um, uh, so yeah, I mean, there, we've had our good times. Well, okay, I can tell you this  and I, what I can say is me and P did get into a fight. Uh, we got into a skirmish about three years ago.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:49):

Oh, three years ago? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Though you were gonna say 30. Yeah, yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:02:53):

No. No, we did. That was the first

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:54):

Time. Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:02:55):

So we fought the first time in 95, 96.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:58):

And you thought it's time to do this again?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:02:59):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:59):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:03:00):

Yeah. Our, our, in our big ages, yes. <laugh>

Yeah. We were in Atlanta, uh, a few years back and he was doing something for Revolt TV. Okay. And,  um, I don't know. We were probably just getting on each other's nerves. Sure. I can't remember what it  was about, but we're brothers,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:17):

Right? Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:03:17):

And so we get in the elevator and, you know, he, he's, he, I don't know. I can't remember what he said. He  said something talking crazy. <laugh> And he was like, "Yeah, you know, I don't know what you think  this is because you got muscles or whatever, whatever." <laugh> And so I rushed him in the elevator.  <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:33):

You're just jealous.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:03:34):

So here, right. So here we're, I'm 6'3", P is 6'5".

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:39):

Okay.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:03:39):

You know, I'm 230. He's probably 260.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:43):

Uh-huh.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:03:44):

Right? So we're in there and, and there's other people in there and the elevator is rocking and we're  tussling and we're - No way. Yes. Yeah, this -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:52):

Did you get kicked out?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:03:53):

No. No. This is just like three, this is like three years ago. And so, um, I end up rolling my ankle on one  of our homeboys, uh, on his, on his shoe. I rolled my ankle and sprung my ankle.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:03):

Oh, geez.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:04:04):

And so we get off the elevator, I'm kinda limping. And he go get, he gets on camera because we're there  for something, right?

Uh-huh. And so

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:04:11):

He gets on camera and, uh, my, my ankle starts swelling. It hurts so bad. So he comes over there and he's  like, "Ah, see, that's what you get for playing. Like you, you know, you still, I, you think you did," you  know? So we kinda, you know, talking back and forth. He ends up making his assistant go get me some,  some, um, uh, ankle stuff.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:30):

Yeah. You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:04:30):

Know, and then we laughed about it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:32):

You're probably like, "I'm too old for this. " We're both too old for that. My body does not heal.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:04:36):

We're both too old. Like it used to. But, but, but you know what? That's what we do though. Like back in  the day, if you had a problem, you put the gloves on, right? Yeah. And so, you know, we were being big  kids again, but this was just a few years ago. Yeah, it's so funny. And he told this story on my show, uh,  after we did the verses. Yeah. You know, and he told the... I was shocked that he brought it up.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:54):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:04:54):

But he told my daughter. He was like, "Yeah, your daddy tried to jump on me in the elevator." <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:58):

I was like... So that, that begs the next question. What is it like working with your daughter on hosting the  podcast? Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:05:04):

Yeah. So, uh, it's, it's dope, you know? Yeah. My daughter, you know, because I had her when I was 16.  Mm-hmm. So we grew up together. You know, my daughter grew up going to the studio. She grew up, I,  I raised her on gangster rap. Yeah. Sometimes when I hear her, her music selection, I be like... And I just  have to remind

What? I, I, well - Can you say? Yeah. Yeah. She listens to Brother Lynch Hung. Okay. She listens to DJ  Quick, Siebel, a Spice One. Okay. All the, the gutter stuff. <laugh> And, but then it rem - I had to remind  myself, "Oh my God, I raised her on this. " Yeah. So the same way when I hear confunction and cameo,  the stuff my mother used to play, this is what it is for her. Yep. But this is what happens when kids have  kids. Couple circles. This what happens when kids have kids, right? Yeah. So, so, uh, but no, it's cool, uh,  working with my daughter. You know, I knew it was something that she could do. Uh, she's very well  spoken, very, uh, charismatic. I think she brings a lot to the table because I wanted her millennial, uh,  perspective.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:05:58):

Yeah, that's great. So smart.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:06:00):

Yeah, yeah. And then also, you know, there, at that time, there weren't, at least I wasn't aware of any other  platform that were doing, you know, father-daughter type content. Um, and then she always, she also  serves as my VP of OG Network. And she's a tech founder herself, you know? She has a all - in-one e commerce marketplace called Goat Moves that she's launching. Yeah. And she has her own team and all  of that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:26):

So - I was reading about that. Mm-hmm. Good for her. That's incredible.

Mm. Uh - Yeah, which I'm dying to go to his new, um - Yeah,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:06:51):

The thing

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:51):

That you have. Chicago. Yeah. I forgot the name of it. The actual name of it. Yeah. Looks incredible.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:06:55):

Um, those right off the top of my, um, Denzel.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:03):

Mm, yeah. Um -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:07:03):

Good

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:04):

One.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:07:05):

Yeah. I think that's pretty much... I like, uh, Quentin Tarantino. I would love to interview him.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:12):

That would be great too. Yeah. So what, what is your plan of attack to get those people on the podcast?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:07:18):

I'll be very honest with you. Uh, again, you live life long enough. It'll teach you how to live. Uh, those  things just come.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:27):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:07:27):

Yeah. You do the work, right? I believe that we attract what we think about. You do the work and then  when that opportunity comes, you're prepared.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:38):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:07:39):

It'll happen and it's time, you know? I've had chances to get, um, Mike Tyson. Mm-hmm. It's just  scheduling, right? Sure. It just came across my desk and it was scheduling conflicts. Also Ice Cube. Um -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:50):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:07:51):

Um, so yeah, yeah. I, I, but yeah, those would definitely be my, my top.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:56):

Love it. Yeah. Okay, good. Um, what are some of your favorite memories or things about growing up in  Kansas City, Missouri?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:08:03):

Um, wow. Man, you know, I think it was a simpler time. You know, and that could be more related to my  age rather, no matter where I was, right? A simpler time. Um, the seasons, you know, I, I, I do kind of  miss the seasons. Yeah. 'Cause in LA, you know, it's nice all the time. It's 80 degrees on Christmas. You  know, I had to adjust to that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:26):

The palm trees with the Christmas lights that you

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:08:27):

Don't have here? Yes. Right. Yeah. It doesn't, it's not the same. Yeah. You know, especially coming from  the Midwest. Um, I miss the seasons and I will say, you know, the, the people are a litle different. In LA,  people don't really speak, you know? Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:41):

The

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:08:41):

Midwest, there's a, kind of a, a, a hospitality, uh, that's not there. Like my neighbors, I don't know any of  my neighbors.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:48):

Yeah. I mean, we hear it all the time, Midwest nice, right? Yes. And it's like now that I'm here full-time,  it's kind of like you don't see your friends as celebrities and the rest of us too. Yeah. Now that I'm here,  I'm like, this is just the norm, right? Yeah. And then you get out of it and realize, oh, nope.

No,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:02):

No. Oh, see there's the Midwest even word that came out of me, so. We're,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:05):

We're not even community really. Yeah. You know, it's like everybody is just kind of minding their  business, you know? M. And you don't really... I don't, I've never known my neighbors, really. Yeah.  Yeah, and I've been there 23 years.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:17):

That's so wild. Kind of

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:18):

Mind our... And I mean, we nod and we speak, but, you know, I don't really know them. We don't come  over

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:23):

And do stuff like

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:23):

That.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:23):

Yeah. I mean, if I'm being honest, we live, we live in the suburbs, but like, we see people too. Yes. It can  be a wave too. Yes. And always not always -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:30):

Right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:31):

Not knowing them as well either. So I guess kind of like life today. It could be

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:33):

A, it could be a suburban thing, but I, I know growing up in Kansas City, growing up in the hood - mm hmm. Where it was community. Yeah. You knew everybody. You knew because it was generations. Like,  oh, that's Ms. Gant. Oh, you know, that's Ms. Williams. This is Ms. Cooper.

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:50):

Everybody knew everybody and if you did something wrong on your way home, like, you can get  chastised by Ms. Goosby. Yeah. <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:56):

You

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:09:56):

Know, Ms. Joyce can pull you to the side and then go tell your mama, you know?

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:00):

Right, right. So it's just

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:10:01):

A different time. Do

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:02):

You have a lot of people that still live here or did a lot of your friends growing up move on?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:10:06):

Um, yes. Yes. A lot of my friends died, uh, went to jail. Um, yes. But I, I do have a, a, a share, you know,  a sector of friends that are still here. Yeah. Um, some, some moved away. Uh, but you know, I, you  know, coming up in the '80s and the '90s, you know, it was, it was hectic here because we had to navigate  and traverse, you know, you had the influx of gangs, you had crack cocaine during that time. So the  streets were very hostile. Mm-hmm. And, and, you know, it was a lot of people lost to the streets and to  prison, you know. There are some people just now coming home from, you know, the Draconian drug  laws that they implemented back then. So, um, yeah, that was... And, and when I first moved to LA, I  used to kind of suffer from survivors, uh, remorse.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:52):

Really?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:10:53):

Yeah. Yeah. I did. 'Cause I, I remember I was like, "Wow, like, you know, why me? " mm-hmm. You  know, because I, I knew of this friend that got killed, this one that didn't make it, this one that went to  prison, this one's on drugs, you know? Mm-hmm. And I can remember when we're, when we were  younger, you know, you go back to that place, nobody raises their hand in third grade and said, "Hey, I  wanna be a dope thing." You know, or I wanna go to prison, right?

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:11:16):

So we all start off very

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:11:17):

Innocent. And how does it, yeah, quickly get to that point years later. Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:11:20):

And, and so you remember that person.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:11:23):

Yeah. And

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:11:23):

Then you, you know, rather they died or just whatever, you know, and then you look at yourself like,  dang, you know, I'm here. I'm so blessed. I have, you know, a wife, I have kids, I have, you know, my  career, I have things, things have kinda worked out for me. Um, not perfect, but,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:11:38):

You know,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:11:38):

Things have worked out for me. So I just, you know, you get over it and you, it's acceptance.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:11:43):

I was gonna say, so acceptance. I was gonna say - Yeah. How did you come to terms with that?  Acceptance. Time and acceptance. It

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:11:47):

Is what it is. I mean, the Bible says, you know, you'll always have the poor amongst you, you know? And  not just financially, but, you know, sometimes people can be poor spiritually - Yeah. Mentally, you know,  uh, emotionally. So, uh, just what it is and that comes from just meeting people where they are and not  imposing your expectations on them, you know? Yeah. So, and then you don't know people's story, you  know? You can know people and grow up with them, but you really don't know what's going on  internally. You don't know what was going on in their households or whatever. Their stuff they had to  deal with, you know? Yeah. And my mother used to tell me, she used to say, "Baby, everybody's not  strong like you. " You know, because it's just certain things I couldn't understand. And I've never been  judgmental. I just couldn't wrap my head around.

(01:12:30):

And she would say that as, when I was young, she was like, "Everybody's not strong like you. "

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:33):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:12:33):

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:34):

So you were super close to your mom?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:12:36):

Absolutely.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:36):

Mama's

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:12:37):

Boy.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:37):

Yeah. Wh- what influence do you think she had on you the most? Like what is your favorite thing about

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:12:41):

Your relationship? Every, everything. So you gotta figure, my mom had me when she was 22. Okay. (01:12:47):

Uh, I grew up an only child. Mm-hmm. And so, uh, I was the oldest grandchild, the first grandchild. So I  was raised, I was doted on. I was treated like a little prince growing up. Yeah. I tell people all the time, I  grew up in the hood, but I had a beautiful childhood. I didn't grow up in poverty, you know? Yeah. I just  grew up in the hood, right? Mm-hmm. And so, um, I had a beautiful childhood. So my mother is a big

part of why I think like I think. 'Cause she, she used to tell me all the time, "You can do whatever you  wanna do. " So she put that, she instilled that confidence in me from a young age.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:19):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:13:19):

You know, and then all the doting that I got. So really, I always though I was something special anyway.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:25):

Yeah. You know? So

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:13:26):

I just though, well, I can, I don't know about y'all, but I can do it, you

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:30):

Know? But I do wonder, you know, just in the world that we live in when there are, not everyone grows  up with the loving mom or the loving dad. Yes. Mm-hmm. I'm sh - I'm guessing that made an impact on  you with your three kids and how you -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:13:42):

Absolutely.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:42):

Were with them. Absolutely. You know how much that affected you. Yes,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:13:45):

Yes. And I give them that and then also me not growing up with a dad. Yeah. Right? Um, I can, I, I never,  I, I can be honest. I think I never had dad issues. Mm-hmm. I think just how wired you, I, I, you can't  miss anything that you never had. So I never had any ill feel, any... I'd never felt the void. You know, my  mother was that good of a mother. I never felt the void.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:08):

Do you think she may be overcompensated or - No. Or just had so much love to give and -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:14:11):

I was an only child. It was easy. Yeah. It was just me and her, you know? So, um, uh, but in, in, in saying  that, I think that, um, yeah, I, I, I never had that, that, that type of... I, but I do remember the only thing  that, that I, not having the father, it did affect me one time. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:31):

When

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:14:31):

I had my son. Mm. What happened was I didn't know how to show love to him because it dawned... But  see, this is what I'm

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:40):

Saying. Did it kind of hit you? Yes.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:14:41):

You realized the difference. I'm in my 20s. Yeah. So I'm like, what? I mean, do I shake his hand? Do I  give him dap? Like, what do I do? Interesting. And it, and it, and again, that self-awareness, it dawned on  me, said, "Oh, you've never been shown affection or love by a man." Mm-hmm. So this is why this feels  weird to you. Yeah. And so I said, "Oh, okay." And so I, I, my son is 26. Yeah. And he would tell you, I  hug and kiss him all the time.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:15:06):

I love that so much.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:15:07):

I tell him, like, I call him baby. Yeah. I call him baby. And I always say, he says, "Dad, I'm grown." I  said, I don't care. Doesn't matter. You always gonna be my baby. Yep. I hug and kiss him all the time. Oh.  So, um, so, you know, but that was self-awareness. Yeah. And that was me understanding what that was  and then working through it and, and making a different choice.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:15:23):

Yeah. Do you talk about family dynamics on your podcast at all? Or is it really just about the industry?

Absolutely.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:15:28):

Yeah. Yeah,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:15:28):

Yeah. We absolutely

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:15:29):

Have. I, I, I sensed from you that you would have incredible wisdom and articulation to be able to bring  that, especially with your daughter co-hosting. Yeah, man.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:15:36):

That'd be really cool. Yeah, because, I mean, parenting isn't, you know, we don't get a pamphlet, you  know? It, it's, it's - We sure do not. It's the easiest thing to mess up, right? Yeah. And a lot of times,  people have to understand that our parents, us as parents, you know, we're living life for the first time too.  Right. So some things we're figuring out, you know, we're not always right. Mm-hmm. Um, we're not  always wrong either. Um, I think and then, you know, because I have grown children - mm-hmm. You  know, those relationships, they evolve over time. You know, how I relate to my daughter now as a grown  woman, I have to let her be a grown woman, you know? Right. Um, I can't control her. I have to respect  her choices and who she chooses to be.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:16:15):

Yeah.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:16:15):

Some parents struggle with that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:16:17):

Yeah, I was gonna say, thank you for saying that, because I totally hear that and have experienced my  own. Of course. I have a great relationship with my parents - Yes. But I, you have been through some of  that too.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:16:24):

Yes, of course. Yeah. And so I think having her young... And, and my wife, she, she comes from a  different background. Mm-hmm. She came up with both parents in the church. You know, my wife is half  Nigerian, so her father was very strict, you know, structure and all of that. I came from complete opposite.  And so with that being said, our disciplinary, uh, you know, the way we discipline is very different. Yeah.  You know, she's the disciplinarian, not me. Uh-huh. We're scared of her, not me. I love that. So I'm the  one saying, "Hey, listen, man, y'all better do this before your mama get home."

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:16:54):

Yeah, but, but, you know, my wife, she was more, you know, her dad was, you know, stern who, which  my father-in-law was more like a father figure to me

A little bit of a happy wife - Yeah. Happy life going on too.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:17:32):

Yeah, yeah. And I'm kinda like, well, nah, babe, you know, she's 30, you know? She's 33.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:17:37):

So - Right.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:17:38):

You gotta let that woman be that woman, be who she wants to be.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:17:40):

Amazing. Mm-hmm. Um, and I wanna be respectful of your time because I know you have to leave here  soon. I could keep talking to you. Yes, likewise. But what do you think of Kansas City today - mm-hmm.  Versus growing up here? Like, how, what is your perception of Kansas City when you come back here?  And what do you, what do you like to do - Yeah. When you're back here?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:17:57):

Um, I love how Kansas City has blossomed. Yeah. Um, I can remember when downtown was basically  tumbleweed and nothing - <laugh>... And dilapidated buildings and all of that. Yeah. Um, I loved how  they built up the infrastructure of it. Excuse me. Um, the other side of that, because I'm in real estate is -  mm-hmm. You know, when you talk about gentrification, it can be, it's good when the natives can share  in it. Mm-hmm. But I think when they're pushed out - Yeah. Then that's where it becomes messed up,  right? Sure. So, um, so it's a gift and a curse.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:18:30):

A little bit of that

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:18:31):

Going on. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. And that's in most cities. Sure. 'Cause I travel quite a bit, so I, I, you know,  um, but I love it. I, um, I think that in our urban communities, uh, and I hate to say that, but it is what it is.  Uh, I would like to see the crime, you know, go down. It's the same as it was when I was growing up.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:18:50):

Why?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:18:51):

Right? Um - I'm

You know, I, it's a layered question. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:19:02):

Um,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:19:02):

I, it's a, you know -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:19:04):

Like, what can we collectively do to help with this situation? 'Cause

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:19:08):

It's so tough. You know, I think it's, I, I don't know. I think it's spiritual warfare. Yeah. I think it's, uh, I  think it's a little bit of systematic, um, it's cultural things that need to be addressed. Uh, you know, we  have to take accountability and I'm speaking specifically in our black communities. Um, sure, we know  what has happened systemically over the years, but, you know, um, at some point, uh, we do have to take  accountability for the things that we need to fix. Um, and some of that I, as I spoke to that destructive  culture. Now, let me say this. Let me be very, very clear. Um, we're only talking about a, a, a, a small  portion as I speak specifically to the black culture. Overwhelmingly amount of black people are law abiding citizens -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:19:52):

Mm-hmm.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:19:52):

And decent people. You know, we're only talking about that, that part. But for whatever reason, you  know, black people, we tend to get the little part tends to, you know, people wanna overshadow - Yeah.  Use that as the representation, you know. Yeah. But that aside, um, you know, I think education. Mm hmm. I think mental health. Yeah. You know, um -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:20:14):

We've come a long way in the world. Yes. But still

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:20:16):

A long way to go. Yes, yes. Yeah. Mental health, uh, education, I think, uh, um, I, I think mental health a  lot and then drugs, you know? Yeah. And, and this goes across all color barriers, right? Yeah. Yeah. For  sure. I think we got a pill problem. You know, people's crazy, man. Yeah. People, you know, we gotta...

And social media, it shows you. Like you can just look at the comments, right? You know, there are  psychopaths. There's people that are manic, depressive, bipolar, all kind, and it comes through social  media. The negativity.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:20:45):

The negativity, yes. Everything. I know. So - I think that's such a good point. And, um, it's, the mental  health thing, like, obviously there are barriers to entry to some degree. Yes. But then I also, on the flip

side, wanna be like, you can get so much free advice and guidance and - Yes. Influence even on a  podcast, right? Yes. It costs you nothing.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:21:02):

Absolutely.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:03):

Find a way that, you know, find an outlet on YouTube or social media somehow. A podcast to find some  of that that could make a good impact, you know? Absolutely. And maybe that sounds a little bit naive for  me to say, but it's just, in my world, I'm like - Yeah. To some degree, you know.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:21:17):

Yeah, but if you, if you're, if you're sick - mm-hmm.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:20):

You know,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:21:20):

And you don't know, you

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:21):

Don't

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:21:22):

Have, you know, you don't have the, the f -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:24):

Yo mind isn't immediately rationally thinking maybe. Exactly. Exactly. No,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:21:27):

Absolutely. So I, I, I don't, it, it's layered, man. Yeah. I think it's just a lot of people hurt and it's a lot of  mental illness on, on different levels, you know? Yeah. And, and that exacerbated with, with substance.  Yep. You know, um, yeah. Yeah. So, uh, like you said, it's a collective. Yeah. It's not just a white thing, a  black thing, a Hispanic thing. It's a collective. Mm-hmm. Um, so I, I would like to see, you know, those  things in every city, but you ask primarily, uh, Kansas City. Yeah. But I love how we're thriving though.  Yeah. I mean, you know, I, I, the city has changed a lot. Mm-hmm. You know, I come back and I, I'm  like, "Oh God, when they put this there?" Right. You know, like, this used to be a dump. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:06):

Like, look at that,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:22:07):

Right?

Between Crossroads, west bottoms - Yeah. Different places. Yeah. The

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:22:11):

Riverfront. Yeah. And even in the inner city, like, uh, I was down in the 20s, um, on the east side, like  Prospect and all of that. Uh-huh. And I'm like, oh, they got condos. They got - Right. Yeah. Oh wow.  Like this used to be a trap. Beautiful. Yeah. Like, you know, so, um, I love how it's, how it's, uh, evolved  and it's diverse and it's thriving. Ultimately, it's progressing. Yeah. So I love that part.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:33):

Yeah. Yeah. And how often do you make it back here?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:22:35):

All the time. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:36):

I'm

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:22:36):

Usually back maybe once a month.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:38):

Okay. Sometime

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:22:39):

I sneak in and let people know, sometimes I don't.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:41):

Yeah. Okay. Favorite restaurants that you like to go to here? Um -

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:22:44):

Go tos. Uh, you know, oh my God. Well, I eat healthy primarily, but when I'm cheating - Yeah. On a  cheat day. Yeah, cheat day. We'll do that. A cheat day. Uh, I eat at Niecy's quite a bit - Love it. On Truce  because they know me. Yeah. They've known me since I was young, teenager. Mm-hmm. Um, uh, I used  to eat at Captain D's because - Nice. We didn't, we don't have one in LA. Yeah. Uh, <laugh> um, uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:11):

Where you like to eat healthy? You can do that too. Uh - I put people on the spot. They're like, "I don't  know. " I don't, I

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:23:16):

Know, right? Chipotle is healthy for me.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:18):

I love Chipotle. Chipotle. I like Cava too.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:23:20):

Yeah. Chipotle. Cava. My daughter, uh, does Cava. Yeah. Um, uh, Gates, of course. Yep. Uh, at least  once. And, um, that's pretty much it. I'm not really a foodie, you know? Yeah. I like seafood a lot, you  know? So that's kind of - Well,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:33):

Especially being on the coast.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:23:34):

That's what I indulge in.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:36):

Yeah. Perfect. Okay, good. Um, and then last but not least, for you, just in life, but let's do professionally  within the world that you're - Yes. You're living in anything else on your bucket list that you would love  to accomplish? We talked a little bit about who you'd want on your podcast - Yeah. That you haven't had

yet. Anything else that would be a dream for you to leave behind in your legacy or, um, what you're  accomplishing and building?

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:23:58):

That's a great question. You're really good at this.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:00):

Oh, thank

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:24:01):

You. Um, let me see. Uh, you know, uh, not to sound like an ass or cliche or arrogant or anything like  that, but if I can really be honest, I'm actually living it right now.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:13):

Good. Yeah. I love

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:24:14):

That. I'm actually literally living my bucket list.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:17):

I love that answer because I think 99% of people would not say that. Mm-hmm. And I think it shows that  you can get there. Mm-hmm. And you can get there at an early age.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:24:24):

Yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:25):

Or before you turn 85 and - Yeah.

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:28):

You know,

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:24:28):

So. And, you know, I remember there was a older gentleman that I met probably 20 years ago. I was, uh,  at a, like, a real estate conference in Atlanta. He was a older or a rich black gentleman. And I remember  him telling me, he said, "You know, youngster," he said, "You get it. " He said, "But

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:44):

I'm

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:24:44):

Gonna tell you. " He said, "You're really not gona get it and find your stride till you're about 50. When  you hit 50, a little bit after 50, that's when you really understand it. " And he was right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:54):

And you're like, "I've got two months as of right

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:24:56):

Now." Yeah, exactly. <laugh> He, he was right. It's, there's a, there's a clarity that you get, you know, as  you get older and you hit this halfway point. Um, then also, you know, there's a, um, you, there's a reality  check that you have more time in back of you than in front of you as well. Mm-hmm. So now you're able  to really take things in. You're able to look at things on the scale of life of what's important. Um, but then

you've kind of learned if you paid atention, because people can get older and it doesn't mean they get  wiser.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:25:25):

Sure.

Courtney "Big Court" Richardson II (01:25:26):

You know, if you paid attention, then you've learned how to navigate things, how to think. You  understand how life works. Yeah. And so whatever it is that you're passionate about it that you worked at,  you know, along with, it's wisdom. Mm-hmm. So now you're able to apply wisdom to those goals. So I  understand what he was saying, because now I've been in alignment. Yeah. I mean, this is the first time  I've been, like, 100% in alignment.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:25:48):

I love that. Yeah. One of my favorite people is Hoda Coppy. I adore her. Mm-hmm. And she has her  podcast and everything else. But I've heard her say that, um, when she left the Today Show, she had  turned 60 and she had realized at that moment that she was done. Yeah. And she wanted to move into  this, um, completely other, like, professional path in her 60s. Yeah. And she said it's been, like, the best  time for her - Absolutely. Because you have so much confidence and - Yes. Um, things that you can build  off of that you've done in all these decades before. Yes,
