 Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:00):

Hey guys. Welcome back to the podcast. As you can see, I am, uh, sort of in character today because I  was really excited to have my guest come in. Matt Black, otherwise known as almost Andy Reed. You  know him, you love him. You've seen him around town. Um, he is clearly very often mistaken for the real  Andy Reed because he pulls off this character so well. And I wanted to hear the backstory as to how he  got into it. And, uh, you know, little did I know getting into the research of him. He's an opera singer. He  does so many things that I never even would've thought of, and he has the best energy. So I'm really  excited for you to hear from him, hear about how this whole character came to be, what he's doing with it,  how you can engage with him. Um, it's a really, really fun chat, so I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  Well, thank, thank you so much for coming in today. Absolutely. Glad to be. This is so fun. I was so  excited to hunch you to, oh my gosh, I didn't even notice your rings until right now. <laugh>. This is  amazing. You're gonna have to like show the camera <laugh>. Um, all right, so we have got almost Andy  Reed, uh, otherwise known as Matt Black. Yeah. Am I allowed to reveal your real name?

Matt Black (00:01:14):

Absolutely. Yeah. Clark Kent my day, and

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:16):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:01:17):

And super nerd by night

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:18):

<laugh>. I love it. I mean, clearly I had to get in, you know, in costume for this. Yeah. I had to play the  part along with you

Matt Black (00:01:26):

<laugh>,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:26):

Um, to really make it like the most. So thanks for coming in. I'm excited to chat with you today. Glad

Matt Black (00:01:30):

To be here. Thanks for inviting me.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:32):

I feel like most people probably know who you are.

Matt Black (00:01:34):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:35):

But for the few living under a rock who might not have, um, encountered you yet, um, tell us who you  are, what you do.

Matt Black (00:01:41):

Well, you've said it. Uh, my name's Matt Black. I've got a beautiful family and, uh, I, uh, work a job out  in Riverside, uh, where I'm a VP of sales for a supplement and skincare company. I sing opera on the side  with the Lyric Opera. And, uh, I've got a great church job where I go in, uh, at 55th and Brookside and  sing. So Nice. I stay pretty busy around town here. Yeah. And I'm really blessed. I love Kansas City.  Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:02:08):

I

Matt Black (00:02:08):

Love everything about it. I've been here for a long, long time. And so, uh, it gives me a lot of joy, uh, just  to be able to play this role.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:17):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:02:18):

Uh, 'cause I look at it, it, it's a role. Sure. Even though we do look alike and we,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:22):

You might forget sometimes that you're not actually Andy Re

Matt Black (00:02:24):

Does that ever happens? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, especially when I'm at a cheeseburger joint. Uh, there

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:28):

You go, <laugh>.

Matt Black (00:02:31):

Oh, I love it. Yeah. Mine always get made a little extra special, I've noticed,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:34):

Right? Yeah. <laugh>. Yeah. Look at that. They're like, we'll give you a second one for

Matt Black (00:02:38):

Yeah. I order a, a single one. It ends up being a double, you know, <laugh>.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:42):

Oh. So funny. Okay. So, quick question. Is this your real voice or are you in like, character

Matt Black (00:02:48):

Right now? Yeah, so <laugh>, I, I've discovered, I think I'm more like a method actor, where when I'm in  character, you know, this is the voice, you know? 'cause I, I normally have a nice clear opera, you know,  I'm an opera singer. Like

Yeah. We, I cannot wait to get into that

Matt Black (00:03:00):

Voice like that. Yeah. And, uh, but no, I tend to, I tend to be more, uh, like Andy

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:05):

Uhhuh <affirmative>,

Matt Black (00:03:06):

Uh, which is, oh gosh, you talk about a role model. I mean Oh my gosh. Doesn't get any better than that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:10):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:03:11):

Uh, you know, uh, when I'm, when I'm dressed up. Yeah. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:14):

Legendary. Okay. So let's go all the way back to the beginning.

Matt Black (00:03:18):

Okay. Because

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:19):

I'm dying to know, of course, like, when did this all begin? But what's your backstory? Are you born and  raised kc? Like, what's your backstory? And walk us into how you got into this whole, um, side of  entertainment. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:03:32):

So I was born in, in Warren, Ohio. Uh, and, um, all my family are Pittsburgh or Browns fans.

Speaker 3 (00:03:38):

Oh.

Matt Black (00:03:39):

I was always the odd one. I was never either a fan of either. Uh, I don't mind probably my personality. So,  uh, but my family early on, uh, when I was probably around 12, we moved to Kansas City, so back in 82.  Uh, and so we've been here ever since. And, uh, you know, I, I always, uh, loved the chiefs. In fact, if you

look at me, uh, in a picture when I'm in high school or young, I mean, I've always got something from  Kansas City Chiefs on

Matt Black (00:04:07):

Uh, all the old pictures of me from Christmas and things like that, I'm wearing a sweatshirt or something.  So I've been a Kansas City Chiefs fan for a long time, and believe it or not, it goes back to those Ohio  days because McDonald's put out a little, uh, series, uh, three little books, uh, on the Super Bowl history.  And, uh, I, McDonald's did McDonald's did back in the day. And in fact, I just recently went on eBay and  got a set of those because

Speaker 3 (00:04:34):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:04:34):

I'm like, man, that really solidified me, they say between the ages of six and 12

Speaker 3 (00:04:38):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:04:39):

Is when you really get your lifelong fanship.

Speaker 3 (00:04:42):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:04:42):

And that's what it did with me. And I saw the Kansas City Chiefs in there, and Lenny Dawson, and I saw,  you know, Minnesota VI Kings and all the different, uh, green Bay Packers in there. And it just really got  me, uh, into football.

Speaker 3 (00:04:55):

Mm-hmm <affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:04:55):

Uh, even though I kind of had a favor of Roger Staubach when I was kind of young, uh, loved Roger  Staubach and Tony Dorsett, but when I came to Kansas City, it was full on, uh, Kansas City Chiefs. I was  very excited. And I was a Royals fan before I moved out here as well.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:11):

Really? How did that, how did that happen?

Matt Black (00:05:13):

Always. Well, 'cause I never liked, uh, you know, the Pittsburgh Pirates or, uh, the Steelers or the Browns  or <laugh>. See, you

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:20):

Just gravitated towards Kansas City and then ended up moving here. Yeah,

Speaker 3 (00:05:30):

Yep.

Matt Black (00:05:30):

Uh, has just been, uh, the best for me. And, and, and I, and people will like, uh, wanna take a picture with  me and they're like, oh, how much do you charge? What are you talking about? I'm a fan. I, I mean,  <laugh>.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:41):

Yeah. This

Matt Black (00:05:42):

Is me being a fan. I mean, it's great. I love it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:44):

It's 'cause you go to Times Square in New York City

Matt Black (00:05:46):

And you're like,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:47):

Like, you now owe me $20. And you're like, what?

Matt Black (00:05:49):

Yeah. What? Excited

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:50):

Over that. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:05:51):

Right. You know? And, uh, last year I did go to Times Square.

Speaker 3 (00:05:54):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:05:55):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:07):

Oh my God. <laugh>. Holy cow. Let's get you traveling more often. Well,

Matt Black (00:06:10):

It was during the playoffs, and I'm like, I'm exhausted.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:13):

Yeah. When

Matt Black (00:06:13):

That happens, because oftentimes I'm just like, everywhere. Oh, hey, can you help come do this? And

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:19):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:06:20):

Yeah. So it's,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:21):

So, okay. So you moved here at 12 immediately. Yeah. You know, became a Chiefs fan.

Matt Black (00:06:24):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:25):

What happened, like through your years? Where'd you go to school? What'd you do for work? When did,  like, did it turn a corner where it be, did it continually grow your passion for the Chiefs?

Matt Black (00:06:34):

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. Uh, so I went to William, William Chrisman High School Okay. In independence.  And, uh, I was, uh, very highly decorated in music. Uh, 'cause I was in band, I was in choir, I was in  orchestra. I was in everything, music that you could be in. Uh, that's where I knew that I was going to be  able to go one day. And, uh, it was my, uh, band director, uh, Mr. Roush Okay. Who had some  connections, uh, to the Kansas City Chiefs. To the Kansas City Kings, because he was a drummer in the  bands.

Speaker 3 (00:07:04):

Uh, and so Tony De Pardo's band. Yeah. He was the drummer in the, in the Kansas City, uh, chiefs band  mm-hmm <affirmative>. There at the stadium. And so he would, uh, find some ways to get us a little  extra gigs. Like I, I played, uh, in the pep band for the Kansas City Kings when I was in high school.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:20):

That's so fun.

Matt Black (00:07:21):

I played the national anthem on a trumpet, uh, when I was in high school for the Kansas City Chiefs.  Wow. However, I'm a trombone player. Okay.

(00:07:29):

And so, uh, I was such a chiefs fan that I, they were auditioning trumpets in town, and I asked my band  director, Mr. Roush, I said, Hey, if I can teach myself how to play the trumpet, can I audition to play the  with, 'cause they were picking 10 of the top, I think it was about 10 at the top trumpet players at the time  in Kansas City in high school. And, uh, so I got on that trumpet, started teaching myself of the national  anthem. I auditioned and, and made it. And so I was out there. Of course

Speaker 3 (00:07:56):

You did.

Matt Black (00:07:57):

And, uh, my previous band director was there, and he looked at me and he goes, well, you're, you're a  trombone player. What are you doing here? Yeah. I'm like, but I'm a bigger Chiefs fan. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:08:06):

And

Matt Black (00:08:07):

I am a trombone fan. Uh, so that kind of got things going. Uh, and, uh, you know, uh, back, uh, when I  used to go to the games, uh, you know, when there was only 20,017,000 people Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:19):

Out

Matt Black (00:08:19):

At the stadium. Uh, which,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:21):

What year would that have been?

Matt Black (00:08:22):

So I started probably, uh, going to my first chiefs game when I was about 1982.

And in 1983, I remember it was a, it was a Browns game. And I, I really enjoyed going to the game and  sitting in the upper level. Yeah. Because I loved watching the punters kick the ball.

Speaker 3 (00:08:39):

Ah. And

Matt Black (00:08:40):

I wanted to see who could get at the highest and who got the best spiral.

Speaker 3 (00:08:44):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:08:44):

And, uh, because I played high school football.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:46):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:08:47):

And, uh, so I just always loved the punter. I was a backup punter at my high school football team. Um,  and, uh,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:53):

Good football and band.

Matt Black (00:08:55):

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Great. Yeah. As Varsity Letterman and football as well.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:58):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:08:58):

Uh, so, uh, yeah. So then, uh, I met some wonderful people. I had a great voice teacher, and, uh, they got  me an audition at UMKC. So I went down there and auditioned and, uh, became a vocal student there.  Okay. Uh, and I have a degree now from, uh, UMKC, uh, in vocal performance.

Speaker 3 (00:09:18):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:09:18):

Uh, so everything just kept moving around. And, and again, I was really getting acclimated to the Kansas  City area, getting involved. I've sung with Andy Williams on his Christmas show when he performed  here. Nice. 'cause he needed some backup singers,

Speaker 3 (00:09:32):

Uhhuh.

Matt Black (00:09:32):

Uh, and so, uh, you know, I just, I I just always been blessed

Speaker 3 (00:09:36):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:09:36):

Uh, to be surrounded by, uh, people of great influence. And, you know, uh, if you're, if you really wanna  be successful in life, uh, you have to be almost like a leach. Mm-hmm. Uh, where you take the best of  everybody that you meet Yeah. And implement that and put that into your character.

Speaker 3 (00:09:52):

Yeah. Advice.

Matt Black (00:09:53):

And that's what good advice I've always tried to do, uh, when I meet somebody who's dynamic mm-hmm

Speaker 3 (00:09:58):

<affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:09:58):

Is I try and find that one piece that they have that I can put into my, uh, life and, uh, and, and, uh, uh, put  that into action. And so, uh, you know, I've always been an observer. In fact, I've always been quiet.  Yeah. I never went to parties, uh, don't, you know, didn't drink anything like that mm-hmm  <affirmative>. And so, uh, you know, I was a people watcher. I still am. I love people watching.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:22):

You've had like a little bit of a sponge kind of.

Matt Black (00:10:23):

Yeah. But this has really opened me up so much more. It's made me a better performer, a better singer.  Uh, it's better at my job at sales than I do. Yeah. Because now I just really, um, you know, when I need to  get into character <laugh>, it just comes so naturally now. Right. I just pop right into it. Yeah. <laugh>.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:41):

So, yeah. And I would definitely never guess that you might be like introverted or

Matt Black (00:10:46):

Quiet. Oh, oh yeah. Very, very always, always the quiet shy one.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:49):

Yeah. Okay. So when did this persona come into play? How did that come to be? How long ago? So,

My wife had purchased, uh, tickets for, uh, the BA Ball out in Liberty. There's this, uh, kind of haunted,  uh, uh, facility that's out there. Well, they say it's haunted

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:06):

A haunted house.

Matt Black (00:11:07):

Well, it's not a haunted house. Uh, the Bellville Bellevue Mansion or something

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:12):

Bell. Okay.

Matt Black (00:11:12):

Or something

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:13):

Like that. Okay. It sounds familiar. Hadn't been there, but

Matt Black (00:11:14):

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And so, anyhow, uh, she purchased a ticket, and I can be a little cheap, and so I was,  she's wrong with that. She got herself a really cool, uh, Ghostbusters outfit and looked really, really neat. I  mean, I was really impressed.

Speaker 3 (00:11:28):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:11:28):

Uh, and I said, well, I've got a closet full of Kansas City Chief's gear. Yeah. And believe me, half of my  closet is Kansas City Chief's gear. It's, it's,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:37):

I mean, yeah. I could only imagine what that wardrobe looks

Matt Black (00:11:39):

Like. Yeah. And I, I mean, I mean, I've got it all over my walls. It's, it's everywhere.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:43):

Yeah.

And so, I, being a professional opera singer, I had a big goatee, uh, you know, or, uh, maybe even a beard,  I can't remember. But I decided to shave it off. Okay. And for some reason, I left the mustache, and I  looked in the mirror and I said to myself, you know, I could probably do an handy Reed. So I went, and

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:07):

What year is this, by the way?

This was in 2018.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:10):

Okay.

And so I went down to Rally House and I said, well, I'm gonna see if I can find something that's, you  know, looked like Andy Reed.

Speaker 3 (00:12:18):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:12:18):

And, uh, being a cheap guy, I saw one on the Clarence Rack

Speaker 3 (00:12:23):

Yep.

Matt Black (00:12:23):

And it was similar to what he wears. And I bought that. I had an old headset down in the basement. I had  a clipboard, and I decided to just go as Andy Reed to the gig.

Speaker 3 (00:12:34):

Yep.

Matt Black (00:12:34):

And, uh, when I got there, uh, people were just, uh, looking at me. And, uh, then they started coming up  and taking pictures,

Never even thought about it.

I would love to meet, obviously would love to have him on the podcast being a huge Casey guy. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:13:57):

Yeah. He, he knows, uh, everything about Kansas City. He's been a Chiefs fan, a Royals fan. Uh, and so  Die Hard, if you want somebody to represent Casey, that is, uh, one of the great people right there, guy.  So he calls me up, and of course, I, I'm thinking, oh, yeah, right. This is Sure. You know.

Matt Black (00:14:14):

Uh, or no, I'm sorry. He didn't call me up. Uh, uh, one of the marketing people at Kansas City, uh, chiefs  called me up and said, Hey, I, I want, we, we got an idea and we want, uh, to, um, uh, meet with you and  see what you think about it. So we met at a restaurant down in the plaza.

Speaker 3 (00:14:29):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:14:30):

And, uh, it was great. Uh, got a, got a chance to talk a little bit. And then while we're sitting there, there,  Eric Stone Street comes walking up <laugh>, and I'm like,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:39):

Was he a part of that meeting? Or he just

Matt Black (00:14:41):

Happened

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:42):

To be there? So he was planned. Yeah, it was

Matt Black (00:14:43):

Planned. Okay. They didn't want him to, uh, meet me at first. Uh, you know, they wanted to bring him in  and

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:47):

Make sure. Yeah,

Matt Black (00:14:48):

Yeah. And Well,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:49):

How did they know who you were? Did they find you? You Yeah. Like were you on social media at

Matt Black (00:14:52):

That point? Yeah, I mean, I had it on, uh, Facebook. Okay. I had just, you know, maybe a few thousand  followers or something like that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:57):

Sure.

Matt Black (00:15:00):

By it had enough to be known. Uh, they had, uh, seen me on some pictures and things like that, and  somehow it got to them. Yeah.

(00:15:07):

And so, uh, yeah. And so, in fact, when I, I first got there, uh, the, uh, the, the marketing guy was like, oh  my gosh. Uh, I mean, I, I, I had a little PTSD <laugh>, you know, because, uh, 20 years ago he'd had an  experience with, with coach, uh, that, uh, you know, he had to sit him down <laugh>. Oh my gosh. And,  uh, so funny, they've been best friends ever since, but you know what I mean? He is, yeah. He's like,  when he saw me walking up, it was so funny. He shared that story with me. But yeah, I was, I was really  shocked and surprised. So,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:36):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:15:36):

Uh, so

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:37):

I mean, the resemblance truly is so uncanny, like just being sitting next to you. Right. It's so wild. So,

Matt Black (00:15:41):

Before, uh, I look, uh, I mean, before his weight loss Yeah. <laugh> <laugh> <laugh>. So, uh, anyhow,  so, uh, Eric Stonestreet tells me about this idea that he has, because he does Randy Reed at Trading Cram.  Oh, okay. Which he plays the role of Andy Reed's brother.

Speaker 3 (00:15:58):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:15:58):

<laugh>. And I mean, he's brilliant at it. It, I mean, it's some of the best, uh, comedy that you will find  mm-hmm <affirmative>. Uh, and so, uh, they took me up to training camp and said, Hey, we want to do  this where we, uh, play you as a role of we're going to, uh, get, uh, uh, Randy away from training camp,  because he just, he's a distraction <laugh>. So we're gonna use fake Andy to take him down to Kansas  City and make him think he's with the real Andy Ree.

Speaker 3 (00:16:23):

Good.

Matt Black (00:16:23):

So, yeah. We did a few shots there, and in fact, there was a, a, one of the players were on was on  concussion protocol

Matt Black (00:16:30):

And he comes walking out and they introduced me to him, and he's a little bit of a, well, what's Aren  aren't supposed to be down there. <laugh>. Yeah. Oh my gosh. And I gotta meet Brett Veatch. He was all  part of it and everything. And they, and by the way, everybody in the organization, uh, they're just the  kindest, the, the, yeah. The nicest people. Were so blessed here in Kansas City of everyone that I've ever  had contact with. Uh, but, uh, that's awesome to hear. So they, we go down to Kansas City and we sit on  a, a chiefs blanket, uh, and share some cheeseburgers together out in front of the Nelson and take some  pictures and things. And so they put that as part of the gig. So funny. And so, uh, uh, uh, they, they told  me that, uh, they were showing their families this video, and, uh, the, the families didn't get that. It wasn't  Andy Reid. And so they had to put my social media uhhuh a little spot there. I think I had a small  Instagram page as well Sure. On there. And if you go look at the Randy Reed thing, and, and you'll, you'll  see it on there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:27):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:17:27):

Because they didn't think people would get it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:30):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:17:30):

Uh, and so he bought me, and by the way, I walk, uh, in, and, uh, he, he tosses me a couple of Tommy  Bahamas

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:39):

Who, Eric

Matt Black (00:17:39):

Eric Stonestreet tossed me a couple of Tommy Bahamas take it, <laugh>. And I'm like, you got to be  kidding me. I mean, I mean, I, I've had some, I mean, I might buy some Hawaiian shirts, but they're  coming from the Kohl's Clarence Rack <laugh>. I love it. But he tossed those to me. It made me feel so  special.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:56):

Yeah.

Yeah. Yeah. He, we, I wore one right there in the, in the actual video. And so that just really got me fired  up to, to take this, keep going a little bit further.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:09):

Absolutely. You must have been like, this is surreal. Like

Matt Black (00:18:12):

It was,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:12):

Who would've thought that this would've come to this

Matt Black (00:18:14):

So fun. Absolutely. Yeah. And so at that particular training camp, I was down in Wichita with my wife  doing some work, uh, with some health food stores down there, because I'm in the natural products  industry

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:24):

For your actual,

Matt Black (00:18:25):

For the actual job day job. <laugh>, somebody calls us up and says, Hey, they're having an Andy Reed  lookalike contest up at training camp. Oh my gosh. You need to get up here. Uhhuh

Speaker 3 (00:18:33):

<affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:18:34):

And so I, we got in the, the vehicle, we drove to Kansas City, I picked up my gear, took my son. We went  up there, and, uh, soon as I walked up, news media was there wanting to interview me, and

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:46):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:18:47):

Talk to me and like,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:48):

No way anyone could be you. Right.

Matt Black (00:18:50):

<laugh> and I still, I still didn't think that I really looked like Coach Reed. And, uh, so they put me in and  I put all my gear on. And by the way, I had a pair of, I have a pair of Kobes mm-hmm

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:11):

Of course, there probably wasn't anyone even close to what <laugh> you were pulling off, right? <laugh>.

Matt Black (00:19:16):

Yeah. So, no, they really were, I thought, yeah. I didn't think I had a chance. Uh, oh, there really? And  there was even a lady dressed up as Coach Reed. Oh, funny. And I thought she was fantastic. <laugh>.  Uh, so, uh, yeah. So I won that, and the, the prize was a pair of tickets to the preseason game.

Speaker 3 (00:19:31):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:19:31):

Now, that was the first time that I went to a game dressed as Andy Reed, because I figured, well, they  gave me these tickets. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:19:53):

This is

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:53):

So fun,

Matt Black (00:19:54):

<laugh>? No, he was, he was, I think he was a little bored. It was a preseason game. Sure. Uh, and so I,  you know, I always, uh, he, uh, he's, he's like me. I probably told him, I said, oh, yeah, you can get  whatever you want to eat, you know,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:20:07):

<laugh>, let's go get some cheeseburgers.

Matt Black (00:20:09):

Yeah. Now. Yeah. Yeah. So, anyhow, uh, you know, we had a great time. And, uh, that's really the first  time that I went. I'd been to lots of chiefs games. Sure. I mean, I went to a lot in the nineties with Marty  Schottenheimer and all of that. And, uh, and so, uh, yeah, that's, that's basically, uh, where everything got  started.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:20:28):

So where did you take it from there then? Did you start working with Well, an agency?

Matt Black (00:20:32):

Yeah. Pardon me here. I Yeah, of course.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:20:34):

And I'm, I'm so excited to get into your, um, story. You already referenced that you're an opera singer,  like Yeah, yeah. When I was doing my homework on you, I honestly had not, I hadn't come across that  before <laugh>. So we're gonna get into that too. Okay. Because that is such a fascinating Yeah. You, you  clearly have a lot of like sides to you, which are really fun. Yeah. Like very, um, you're like a  Renaissance guy. So, <laugh>. Okay. So tell us though, like where you kind of took it from there and,  well,

Matt Black (00:20:57):

So I, you know, I, I had been having fun Yeah. Posting pictures on, on, uh, Facebook. And, uh, there was  another guy in town, Chris Brown Uhhuh,

We get along. In fact, uh, uh, we, we got together and we auditioned, uh, we sent an audition tape into the  Kansas City Royals to sing the national anthem. Who would not Kansas City Royals, who would not want  two coach Andy Res <laugh> singing the National Anthem. I mean, mean, mean, come on,

Speaker 4 (00:21:25):

Obviously.

Matt Black (00:21:26):

But they, uh, I guess I'm not a 16-year-old with, uh, you know, and so, uh, you know, they love the, the,  the, the, the young, uh, singers. And so anyhow,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:34):

There's still time. Right?

Matt Black (00:21:35):

Yeah. We, so we had a good time with that. He sings karaoke, I sing opera. So we're, we're very, very  similar in that

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:21:40):

Uhhuh,

Matt Black (00:21:41):

Hadn't, and TikTok was booming, of course, during the early

Matt Black (00:22:03):

Stages of COVID. Yeah. So I did this little thing where I jump up in the air as I was dressed as Santa  Claus.

Speaker 3 (00:22:09):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:22:09):

I jump up in the air, and on the way back down, I transformed to Andy Reed <laugh>. And, uh, that was  kind of a trend. I go, look this up. Yeah. It was the first one that's on there. And, uh, so, uh, it, everything  just started to grow and go crazy.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:22:23):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:22:24):

And so, uh, you know, that's, that's really how I started to get known was TikTok.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:22:28):

Yeah. See, you were just creating your own content at home or wherever.

Matt Black (00:22:32):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:22:33):

meet him when it happens. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. Uh, I'm not one of those people that are gonna go  searching, uh, to meet somebody.

Speaker 3 (00:23:00):

Right.

Matt Black (00:23:01):

I like things to happen organically. 'cause then it feels natural.

Speaker 3 (00:23:03):

Sure.

Matt Black (00:23:04):

Uh, and so, uh, my story is very organic. Mm-hmm

Speaker 3 (00:23:08):

<affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:23:08):

Uh, and TikTok, uh, just started to grow and grow. I started to doing some lives. Um, and, uh, you know,  it was just a lot of fun. I didn't have anything else to do.

Speaker 3 (00:23:18):

Right.

Matt Black (00:23:19):

And so that's where I really focused my attention. And it, and it grew really nicely. I think I had around a  hundred thousand followers that first season. Yeah. That's being on TikTok,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:28):

That's huge deal. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:23:29):

Yeah. Yeah. And so now over time, this last year, I haven't spent as much on TikTok. Uh, I spent more  time on Instagram Okay. And growing that. And, uh, you know, the NFL has helped with that multiple  times when they posted me at a game.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:45):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:23:45):

And, uh, in fact, uh, this headset right here.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:00):

Up having no idea. I picked up, I'm like, thank goodness I picked

Matt Black (00:24:03):

Up. Yeah. And I'm like, oh, yeah, whatever. This is a total scam.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:06):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:24:06):

And the guy checks on me before the game, Hey, you here? Yeah. Okay. They wanted me to meet at a  certain time. And so I'm like, okay, I'm gonna go down there and it'll be something weird, or somebody in  the stands. And no, sure enough, uh, I go down there and they had me hand me this Bose headset gear. Oh  my gosh. Uh, and it had all the wires and everything on it, actually. And I'm like, oh, can I plug this in  and listen to the game?

Speaker 3 (00:24:30):

You know? Yeah.

Matt Black (00:24:31):

Right. <laugh> <laugh>. Um, but, uh, it, it ends up later on, I didn't know this at the time, but of course,  the NFL, they probably knew that they were going to do this. Sure. In fact, um, they put a picture of me  out during the game, and in, before halftime, it had 600 to thousand likes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:49):

And like, unbeknownst to you. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:24:50):

I had, obviously, because you got there, had, and then at the end of the game, they was blowing up.  You're, you're, you're trending. You're trending. They put you out there. Okay. And so, uh, later on  though, I found that out that this, uh, uh, it, it, it was Andy Reed's headset. 'cause they had changed

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:05):

So

Matt Black (00:25:06):

Awesome. Uh, contracts. Uh, and maybe, I don't know, maybe it was a backup headset or anything, but it  somehow it was associated with him, and they would never tell me who gave it to me. Uh, I asked, yeah.  Because I said, who can I thank for this?

You can't get a replacement though. You gotta, that's the real

Matt Black (00:25:39):

Deal. Yeah. In fact, uh, this year or last year, I cut the wire off because I was so tired of walking in with  all that extra wires and everything stuffed in my pockets. And I thought, well, I'm just gonna go with this.  My first headset was a Motorola, uh, PS uh, uh, Madden headset.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:55):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:25:56):

And, uh, yeah, because they used to have a contract with Motorola.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:26:32):

He was just feeling it,

Got very good skin worked. Right. Company. Yeah. We're gonna have to trade secrets later after this  recording. Yeah. Okay. So when did you actually meet Andy Reid? And what was, do you have a story  there? Yeah.

Matt Black (00:27:20):

Experience, like, well, uh, I had somebody reach out to me and, uh, they, uh, said, Hey, uh, we're, um, uh,  with an agency and, uh, we hear that there's an Andy Reed commercial coming up, and, uh, we think that  you'd be perfect for it. And I didn't know anything about having an agent or anything like that. And I'd  like, yeah. <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:27:39):

Heck yeah.

Matt Black (00:27:39):

I'll tell. Yeah. And so, uh, you know, uh, I, they, I get the job. I'm just doing a, a, a set in, I think is what it  was called. Okay. Or something like that. And, uh, so basically it was, uh, the first time, uh, I thought it  was actually kind of funny when I drove up to the set, uh, it was at a high boy in Independence. Mm-hmm  <affirmative>. Uh, they started taking me to his trailer.

Speaker 3 (00:28:01):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:28:02):

Uh, because they thought that I was Andy Reed, you were <laugh>. And of course they did. And I'm like,  no, no, no, no, no. I'm, you know, and, and it was so funny. Uh, and I've got a few good parking spots  because of that. I bet. Uh, at big events, <laugh>,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:28:14):

I bet you've got a lot of good perk stories that have happened.

Matt Black (00:28:17):

Well, you know, I, I, I've been blessed. Yeah. Uh, so anyhow, um, uh, uh, that, uh, uh, so I, I, I get the job  and basically they're using me because I'm even the same size as pretty much of him. Uhhuh

Speaker 3 (00:28:32):

You might have to share

Matt Black (00:30:37):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:30:42):

You're living the dream for a lot of people in Casey

Matt Black (00:30:45):

<laugh>. Wow. And I'm watching, and I'm looking at this lady who is a cheeseburger artist. I mean,  seriously, she was sitting there all day long. They were cooking her up the burgers, and she had a gem on  her eye like a jeweler would have.

Speaker 3 (00:31:01):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:31:01):

And she was clipping and cutting and putting stuff on there. Uh, and I'm sitting to my cell or sitting there  thinking, oh my gosh, I hope they're not eating these. And, uh, because, uh, she's doing a lot of work on  these <laugh> Yeah. <laugh>. And then you find out later. Yeah. Coach said he had like 65,000. Geez.  Oh my gosh. That's so funny. I watched every one of them be made. I can attest them. They all looked  amazing. They looked delicious. <laugh>.

Speaker 3 (00:31:25):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:31:25):

Uh, but, uh, I learned so much, uh, being there, uh, being in an opera is fantastic. And I mean, we've got  our directors, we've got everything. Yeah. Uh, but this was big time. We had like 150 people running  around. You had like, uh, I don't know, maybe 10, uh, directors, uh, associate directors and things just  sitting there watching, uh, the, the, the TVs and the cameras Yeah.

Matt Black (00:31:59):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:32:03):

You know, uh, in fact, that  reminds me of a funny story. Uh, the first time I worked with, uh, uh, uh, Eric Stonetree.

Speaker 3 (00:32:35):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:32:35):

Uh, I mean, I'm just a helpful guy. I mean, uh, you know, I, that's just the way I've always been. Uh, the,  uh, a piece of set needed to be moved.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:12):

So let's talk about these rings that you've got. Okay. What's going on here?

Matt Black (00:33:15):

So, uh, uh, I don't wear the fourth ring, uh, because, you know, the chiefs have one back in the day, 50  years previous to this

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:22):

One. Right.

Matt Black (00:33:22):

Uh, but every time the chiefs win a Super Bowl, I, I buy rings and, and I'm, I have to go quite through  quite a few of them. Yeah. Uh, every season because, uh, every time you fist bump somebody out in a  parking lot or something.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:44):

Should get a, you should be an extension of the team to get the real

Matt Black (00:33:47):

Deal. No, no. I, I, I That would be cool. <laugh>. Yeah. But they got bigger things to think about, uh, uh,  getting us back into the playoffs next year. Uh, but so, uh, yeah. So the gems fall out.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:57):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:33:58):

Now, uh, I, I finally figured out where I can buy some of these gems. So now I've got a whole drawer for  all of 'em. I'm not going through as many rings. I actually go through three or four rings a season. Oh

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:09):

My gosh.

Matt Black (00:34:10):

Uh, and, uh, once they start turning my fingers green, then I know it's time to get another one,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:14):

<laugh>. That's right. We need to get you a sponsor for these rings. Whoever makes these, we need to get  you connected with them. There you go. Exactly.

Matt Black (00:34:21):

There we go. Get this going for you. All right. Justin, do you hear that? <laugh>. <laugh>.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:25):

Oh my gosh. I love it. Um, okay. So do you go to a lot of chiefs games? Are you tailgating? Yeah. Like,  is this part of your, just for you doing it for fun, is it part of you being like your, um, your talent that  you're getting hired for? Yeah. What does that look like?

Matt Black (00:34:38):

So, when I first started going as Andy, uh, you know, I just, uh, just for fun, I started walking around in  the parking lots and things like that. Just, I literally, uh, did it just to get people pumped up.

Speaker 3 (00:34:49):

And, uh, uh, all  kinds of people stop you to take pictures. And, you know, I was working, uh, out in the, this, the, uh, out  the tailgating section for several hours.

Speaker 3 (00:35:10):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:35:10):

And, uh, it would just wear me out. I be, by the time you get into the game, and, and it was really hard,  uh, because, uh, you know, you'd wanna go in there. Uh, but, uh, you get, get, you know, just one more,  just one more if I

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:35:24):

Matt Black (00:35:35):

Do that. Yeah. Yeah. 'cause I would feel a little weird. I would always tell him I'm such a fan. Yeah. Uh,  but, uh, you know, so nowadays, uh, I, I literally, I'll buy gold parking or something like that, Uhhuh  <affirmative>. So I'm a little closer, uh, to the stadium. Um, and I, I, I have a really, uh, good friend who  has a, a suite there and, uh, perfect. Uh, an RTI and, uh, boy, I'll tell you what, he's floated me some  tickets and, uh, just been fantastic. Uh, it's been great. Uh, when he doesn't have an opportunity to float me a ticket, uh, then I'll, uh, get on  an app and I'll just buy my ticket before the game. Yeah. So I've never been a season ticket holder, mostly  because I have had children.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:15):

Sure.

Matt Black (00:36:15):

And the children can be quite expensive.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:17):

Yes, they can. I'm in the thick of that too.

Matt Black (00:36:19):

Yeah. Yeah. So, uh, now they're both in college, and when they're done one of these days, I, you know, I  plan on, uh, maybe having one year at least where I can say that I was a Kansas City chief season ticket  holder. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:31):

<laugh>, you'll get that for sure. Um, are either of your kids like, Hmm, maybe I could be your agent  moving forward? Yeah. <laugh>, let's make this even bigger than what

Matt Black (00:36:38):

It's now. Yeah. Actually, I never asked them to really, to do anything.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:42):

Speaker 3 (00:37:13):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:37:14):

And, uh, so, uh, a lot of, lot of tiktoks and things like that. The, the, the people who run the security there,  they know me pretty well.

Speaker 3 (00:37:21):

Yeah. I bet.

Matt Black (00:37:21):

<laugh>. Uh, because, uh, the first few years of doing this, even my cameos and things, I did every single  one of them at the stadium. Wow. I mean, no matter whether it was freezing cold, in fact, I bought myself  a, a big tall, uh, a tent potty. And so, oh,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:37:37):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:37:38):

So that, I thought that I could sit inside of that with the stadium behind me mm-hmm <affirmative>. And  stay a little bit warm. <laugh>

Matt Black (00:37:45):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:37:54):

<laugh>. Yeah. Getting blown over. Yeah. <laugh>. Oh my gosh, that's so funny. Yeah. Okay. So let's  talk about the cameos, because it's a big part of what you do. So tell us what, um, like what you do for  them. Yeah. What people you see for

And, uh, I, there's certain times of the year where I'm in the top 10, uh,  especially during fantasy. Yeah. That's football season. That's huge. Uh, but I've finished as like one year  as the, the top cameo person for the state of Kansas. Uh, uh, you know, and so I, I've really been blessed.  And, um, that's, uh, that's where a lot of my, uh, additional income has come from. Mm-hmm  <affirmative>. So we'll figure it out

Matt Black (00:40:51):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:52):

Speaker 3 (00:41:14):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:41:15):

Uh, in fact, I've got some friends over in Germany that I've done some collaboration, collaboration from.  Yeah. Nice. Uh, because, you know, uh, when I first started doing social media, man, I just started  tagging, uh, the Kansas City Chief Deutschland, uh, Kansas City Chiefs, Brazil, Kansas City Chiefs, uh,  Australia.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:31):

I

Speaker 3 (00:41:31):

Speaker 3 (00:41:36):

Yes.

Matt Black (00:41:37):

Uh, more than inside of the United States. It's like, uh, that a halftime point show is coming up. I mean,  he's, uh, bad bunny is so well known internationally. Huge. And that's, uh, a lot to do with why he's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:48):

Very, so

Matt Black (00:41:48):

He's performing at the, at the halftime show. Yeah. And so that's where I reached out to first was I  thought, you know, I probably have a greater percentage of getting, uh, recognized in reaching out to

some of those com uh, communities. I love that. And so it happens. And so I get booked all the time. Uh,  and, and when I do a cameo, I oftentimes have to do a lot of research.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:08):

Okay. I

Matt Black (00:42:09):

Don't just get on there and say exactly what you want me to say.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:12):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:42:13):

You know, uh, first of all, I wish they had a little thing that said how to pronounce names, because when  you're doing a lot of international cameos, <laugh> Yeah. In fact, I'll have some people, uh, from India,  imagine India, some people from India that will tell me, oh my gosh. They were just rolling on the floor  listening me how you said it. Pronounce their names, <laugh>. And I do, I look 'em up because I wanna  make sure that I do it right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:32):

Like I'm doing my best.

Matt Black (00:42:33):

Yeah. And, uh, gosh, I've done probably over 5,000 cameos. What, uh, since I've been doing this. And  you think about that, that's a lot of time.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:40):

That is a ton of time. Yeah. Because what are they, like a minute, two minutes,

Matt Black (00:42:43):

Minutes? No, I minor minimal. Uh, two and a half minutes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:46):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:42:47):

Yeah. Uh, and on, on fantasy season, sometimes they can go as much as 10 uh, minutes. And, uh, during  fantasy season sometimes I'm doing 40 a day.

Speaker 3 (00:42:55):

Matt Black (00:43:14):

And that's where some of, I think that's where my successes come from. Mm-hmm

Matt Black (00:43:17):

Uh, people are surprised. They're like, oh my gosh. Uh, it was the one guy who was like, bro, you just had  us rolling on the floor. <laugh>. I mean, we, we did not expect this, you know? Yeah.

Matt Black (00:43:28):

Right now my cameos are pretty affordable 'cause it's off season. So <laugh>

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:44:10):

Is somebody doing that?

Matt Black (00:44:11):

Uh, especially if they want to use foul language in it. I, I'll usually turn that down Sure.

Not a thing. Coach's character. Yeah. Uh, uh, but, uh, uh, so I tried to make it as funny as possible, uh, in  a way that was, uh, not going to make somebody sad. Uh, and, uh, and, and let it happen naturally. And I  did it and it turned out really well. <laugh>. So I did go ahead and, and process that cameo and let it

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:44:37):

Uh, you know, and I'll have a lot of people try and set me up and that's the ones I gotta  watch out for, because What do you mean? They set me up? Mindy Hargesheimer (00:45:35):

Oh, that's so funny. <laugh>. Oh my gosh. So where do you wanna take this? Like where, and, you know,  what, do you have other visions for what you wanna do? Or like, do you wanna do more commercials?  Yeah. What does that look like for

Matt Black (00:45:45):

You? I mean, I have my vision board of, uh, yeah. You know, between me and the higher power of where  I'd like to be with this.

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:25):

Speaker 3 (00:46:35):

Okay. I

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:35):

Wanna get into your musical side. Sure. So you referenced in high school Yeah. What you did. Yeah.  'cause this is one, perhaps to Andy Reed for knowing that that's, um, part of your actual persona.

Speaker 3 (00:46:45):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:46):

But this is probably a surprise for a lot of people who haven't taken the time to do a little deep dive of  who you are. Yeah. So talk about that. Like what got you there? Yeah. What you do in Kansas City to this  day, because we can go watch you perform,

Yeah. So in high school, uh, oh, actually going all the way back into elementary school, uh, you know, I  used to sing in the church, uh, youth choir and things, and people would always say Max sings too loud,  you know, <laugh>. And it's true. I used to sing loud. That's fine. I grew up, uh, I didn't listen to the rock  and roll and things like that. I mean, I was listening to elevator music. I was listening to Buddy Morrow,  who was a Trump player.

Speaker 4 (00:47:22):

You can look back and connect the dots.

Matt Black (00:47:23):

Yeah. Yeah. And so I didn't grow up, uh, uh, uh, knowing anything about opera, uh, when I got into high  school mm-hmm <affirmative>. Uh, I just, uh, started doing everything that I possibly could do, uh,  music wise, uh, whether it be a musical, uh, in fact, uh, I did Judd in, uh, in, uh, in Oklahoma. Okay. And  everyone else had a microphone except for me. I didn't need one, uh, <laugh>. And so, uh, perfect. Yeah.  So, uh, but that, you know, and so I got, uh, addition into college and, uh, my goal was I wanted to be a  contemporary Christian artist.

Speaker 3 (00:47:55):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:47:56):

I mean, Sandy Patty was my person. Yes. And I'm like, oh my gosh, if I could be anything like Sandy  Patty or Steve Green, or Larne Harris, or the Gaither Vocal band, then I'm set. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:08):

Knew

Matt Black (00:48:08):

Exactly. That's what I wanted to do. Exactly. Well, I got to UMKC and, and the, the opera directors said,  you know, he kind of, Matt, you got too good a voice to be a contemporary Christian. And he had a real  <laugh>

Speaker 3 (00:48:20):

Southern, interesting.

Matt Black (00:48:21):

Michael Johnson was great guy. And, uh, so he got talked me into trying out for the opera, and I got my  first role as the second priest in, uh, in, uh, uh, the ma uh, ma uh, magic Flute.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:35):

Okay. But by the way, was this kind of, were you taken aback, like when he suggested that you should do  that? Had you even remotely thought about Not

Not at all. Okay. I wanted to be, I knew what I wanted to be.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:47):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:48:47):

And so, um, uh, yeah, so had me, uh, singing that, and that that went okay. And then they started, uh,  having me audition for other roles there. And so I started getting leads, Uhhuh

Speaker 3 (00:48:58):

<affirmative>,

Matt Black (00:48:58):

Uh, after that. And, uh, gosh, I performed probably over 40 operas as leads in roles. Uh, over the years,  uh, I've performed in lots of companies, uh, for free

Speaker 3 (00:49:09):

Mm-hmm <affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:49:10):

Because I mean, and, and that's what you do if you're an artist. I mean, you just do it Sure. Because you  wanna do it. Mm-hmm

Speaker 3 (00:49:16):

<affirmative>. And

Matt Black (00:49:17):

There's been a lot of great opera companies, uh, that weren't professional here in Kansas City.

Speaker 3 (00:49:22):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:49:23):

But when they, uh, uh, you know, I'd been doing it for a long time, and when they, uh, I just, well, I still  remember that first, that first time where you sing something and you hear the audience. I was talking to  my son about this because he's a musician Yeah. As well, when you hear the audience just start  screaming, uh, after you sing an aria. And it was so unexpected, because I don't ever, I don't go in with  expectations. Right. 'cause if you do, you know, you're just gonna be disappointed. You

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:53):

Be disappointed. Yeah.

And so, uh, it was so surprising to me, but it made me feel so special. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. I bought  the tape of that, and I listened to that over and over again. And, and, you know, uh, I, I like to sing  because I, I like the way I sing. Yeah. I like to hear myself sing. And it's that applause, uh, that makes you  feel so good. Even though I'm a white knuckle singer, I am very nervous when I go out on stage. Are  you? Oh, yeah. Okay. Even, even, I had to do hymns at, at a, a a a funeral this week, and I was very, very  nervous just to sing the hymns. Sure. Uh, that's just the way I am. Sure. But I use that energy.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:29):

I completely understand that,

Matt Black (00:50:29):

By the way. Yeah. Yeah. I used that energy to

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:31):

Focus. But it's funny, you would never guess, right?

Matt Black (00:50:33):

Yeah. No. Just knowing

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:50:33):

Your

Matt Black (00:50:34):

No. And that's why I didn't really become a professional opera singer when I was young. Uh, 23, I think I  was, uh, uh, auditioning. Uh, they have a regional metropolitan opera auditions. Mm-hmm <affirmative>.  And I, I was awarded the most promising young singer at that age. Wow. And so, uh, I, I, and, and one of  the greatest, uh, bar or bases ever in, uh, metropolitan Opera, his name was Jerome Hines. Uhhuh

<affirmative>. He, uh, actually talked to my voice teacher and wanted me to come study with him. I  wasn't raised in opera. Wow. I didn't know anything about Jerome Hines. I didn't know that he wrote the  book Singers on singing Yeah. And all of this. And, and, uh, so it's probably good that I didn't, because I  chose to have a family mm-hmm <affirmative>. And, uh, it was the right choice.

Speaker 3 (00:51:14):

Sure.

Matt Black (00:51:14):

Uh, for me, even though they are used to many nights not having dad there. Uh, sure. My, uh, my wife  does an amazing job covering for me, uh, when I'm not there. Uh, but, uh, yeah. So, uh, when they built  the new, uh, opera House here in Kansas City, I said, you know, it's time for me to audition for the Lyric  Opera.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:51:34):

Speaker 3 (00:51:54):

Okay. We

Matt Black (00:51:54):

Had Pat Patti Lone on there, the Canadian Brass, uh, Tommy to all of them Yeah. Here in Kansas City.  And we performed on the same, uh, the opera course performed with them all.

Speaker 3 (00:52:05):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:52:05):

Or not with all of 'em, with Platy Domingo. And so, uh, oh my gosh. To sing with that, uh, company. And  that hall has just been absolutely amazing. Uh, uh, it is just a blessing, uh, to be a part of that. That all the  singers here in Kansas City are just the nicest people.

Speaker 3 (00:52:23):

Really.

Matt Black (00:52:24):

And that's why, uh, you know, it's so unusual. Mm-hmm

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:52:27):

<affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:52:28):

Really, you don't, a lot of, you don't have a lot of divas here in Kansas City. And let's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:52:32):

Just go back to like a Midwest nice thing, since you're not all of them are from here. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:52:35):

No. In fact, guests will come in and, uh, I always love it during the Titz probe. So the ZZ probing is when  you sit there and you sing through with the orchestra the first time. Okay. You don't do any of the mo uh,  movements or anything like that. That'd be a Mondo probe. Uh, but, uh, uh, but I always love it when we

can turn the head of one of the artists that are up there up front, and they're like, we sing something, and  then you see 'em do this, and they're like, yeah, that's Kansas City for you there. That's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:04):

So great. No, that is really like a really fun testament to hear about. 'cause you have context of that, so,  yeah. Yeah. I think that's really interesting to hear.

Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:11):

So how often are you performing?

Matt Black (00:53:13):

So, uh, I've done as much as, uh, four, uh, with them in a season. Okay. Uh, but typically it's one or two.  Yeah. Uh, a year. Sometimes they don't have choruses 'cause it's all women or something. Okay. And so  there's been a year or two maybe that you don't have that, but I, I'm fortunate enough that usually I'll get  scheduled for one or two.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:31):

Okay.

Matt Black (00:53:31):

Uh, a season with them. And every time I get it an opportunity, it's just, well, it's just great. Yeah. I love  the comradery. Yeah. I love the, you, you believe it or not. I mean, these voices in Kansas City, um, and a  lot of 'em are young. It's a lot talent. A lot of 'em are younger than me. Mm-hmm

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:48):

<affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:53:48):

Incredibly talented.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:49):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:53:49):

We have some of the best musicians in the country right here in Kansas City.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:53:53):

Are they trained here? Are they moving in from other places?

Matt Black (00:53:56):

Kinda accommodation. So a lot of them will be coming in to get their doctorate here, either at KU or  UMKC, and they travel in for that. Yeah. Uh, but, uh, it's topnotch. Uh, there's no doubt about it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:54:07):

Do you travel for the singing at all, or do you just do it here?

Matt Black (00:54:10):

No, I just do it here. Uh, okay. I did spend a summer, um, down at, uh, the Fine Arts Academy, uh,  inspiration point down in, uh, Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Oh,

Speaker 3 (00:54:34):

And,

Matt Black (00:54:34):

Uh, that was, that was the most nervous one time I'd ever been on stage. Really? Yeah. I, uh, I was cast  for two different roles, uh, Antonio from Pachi. Okay. We just did that here in Kansas City. Okay. Uh,  you might have seen, uh, uh, a picture of, uh, of Luciano Pavarotti and clown makeup with a big bass  drum or something like that. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. That's that opera. Got it.

Speaker 3 (00:54:53):

So

Matt Black (00:54:54):

It's a very, uh, opera charisma, very, uh, dramatic, uh, very in, in intense. Um, and so I loved, that's my  favorite role is Tony Hill in that, in that role. Uh, I've done it several times, uh, but, uh, uh, it was six  weeks later and I had been double cast as the senior Dilu in another opera, but they never had me do it.  And, uh, we had six weeks earlier, we had done all the staging and everything for it, but they told me, uh,  last, the last performance. I'm singing it and I'm thinking, well, we haven't done this in six weeks.

Speaker 3 (00:55:28):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:55:28):

And, uh, I had to remember everything. And, and so I literally was on the backstage and it was a fight or  flight. I literally was going to run and never turn around. I, I have

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:43):

From the anxiety

Matt Black (00:55:44):

That fearful

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:45):

Mm-hmm <affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:55:46):

Of going out there and messing this all up.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:48):

Sure.

Matt Black (00:55:48):

Uh, but I just pushed myself to go out there. Uh, I always say to myself while I'm on stage, stay in the  moment. Stay in the moment. Stay in the moment. Because if you think ahead

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:55:59):

Right.

Matt Black (00:55:59):

Or if you think about something that happened in the past,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:01):

Yes.

Matt Black (00:56:02):

You're gonna mess it up.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:03):

Literally. Good advice for so many different things.

Matt Black (00:56:05):

Yeah. Yeah. So I tell my kids the same thing, just while you're performing, just stay in the moment mm hmm <affirmative>. And if you do that, you're gonna be just fine. Forget about the people that are out  there, stay in the moment of the character

Speaker 3 (00:56:15):

Mm-hmm <affirmative>.

Matt Black (00:56:15):

And so, uh, you know, so I decided, decided to do that, and it just went fantastic. I couldn't believe that I  remembered all of that. And, uh, but the brain is, the brain is an amazing thing. Yeah. And so, uh, you  know, anybody, you know, if there's anybody who says they can't sing, by the way, you know that I can  get you there, <laugh>.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:37):

I'm like, me. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:56:38):

No, it's, it's, it's an easy thing to do. I can show you in, in five minutes if we had a keyboard here, I could  get you singing. Yeah. Uh,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:56:45):

Dare I ask you to even sing for us today? Or is that a little too on the spot?

Matt Black (00:56:49):

<laugh>. Well, <laugh> well, uh, you know, I did have a croissant earlier, so I don't know what's gonna  come out, you know, but, uh,

Speaker 4 (00:57:03):

One in two and three and four, and, you know, oh, Leo, remember the old, um, thanks for doing Bud  Bunny, bunny Coer cartoon with the, of course, the opera singer <laugh>. Oh my gosh. That one, two,  and three and four dances all day long. You know, <laugh>.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:57:19):

Oh my gosh. I love it. Thank you. <laugh>. So good. Oh my gosh. Well, I guess that begs the question,  where do you wanna take that? Would you wanna do more

Matt Black (00:57:29):

With No,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:57:30):

This, or is it

Matt Black (00:57:30):

More I am not

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:57:31):

Exactly where you want it to be.

Matt Black (00:57:32):

I'm a nervous performer, so if I can be in the chorus, uh, they give me, uh, they've given me bit rolls and  things like that. But literally, I'll get out there, uh, one time <laugh>, one time I'm out on stage, uh, at the  lyric and, and I'm supposed to open this, uh, this gate, uh, for all of the singers to come through. And I,  I'm a bit of a method person, so I get into my character. Yeah. You know, and I pretend like I'm blocking  this gate. Well, this is during performance. The key got stuck.

(00:58:02):

Whoops. And I'm like, I can't get this open. I can't, what do I do now? I this open. And I'm like, don't like  this. Oh gosh. Don't let this happen. Don't let this happen. <laugh>. And I finally, it was a little late.  Right. I finally figured it out and got it open. <laugh> ripped it open. Oh my gosh. Gosh. So, so things  nerve wracking sometimes things like that happen on stage, and you just gotta be ready to go with it.  Yeah. The first thing I learned, um, uh, going out on stage is you gotta be responsible for your own props.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:58:28):

Okay. You know,

Matt Black (00:58:28):

If you're a young performer, just know that no one else can be responsible for your props other than you  remember that. All right. Uh, so when you get on stage and you don't have something, it's not the stage  hand's fault, it's your fault. <laugh>, it's

Matt Black (00:58:53):

Agency. Yeah. Moxie Talent. What that relationship like? Oh my gosh. They're, they're so amazing out.  They didn't know what to do with me at first <laugh>. And I just still, they still don't know what to do  with me. How did you

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:02):

Get connected with them?

Matt Black (00:59:03):

Did they find you? Well, uh, a a friend of mine, Sarah, uh, my, a brother, actually a friend of my brother's  Okay.

Speaker 3 (00:59:08):

Uh,

Matt Black (00:59:08):

Introduced me, uh, to them and, uh, and, uh, got and, uh, got in with them and, uh, did a little audition.  And, um, sure. They said, yeah, that's great. Yeah. We don't know what to do with you. What do you  wanna do?

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:20):

They're like, this, this is new material for us, but

Matt Black (00:59:22):

What'll figure it out, what we wanna do? I said, well, every time Andy Reid does a commercial

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:59:25):

Yeah.

Matt Black (00:59:25):

I wanna be this double <laugh>. Yeah. Yeah. Easy peasy. So, so she's really good about that. She knows  about everything that's coming up. We get little emails and say, okay, hey, we got the World Cup coming  up. You better get your website together. You, there's gonna be lots of acting opportunities, not just for  me, but for everybody.

Speaker 3 (00:59:41):

Sure. Yeah.

Matt Black (00:59:41):

We're talking, they've got hundreds of people in their Once in a lifetime Yeah. Studio. So they've gotta  manage a lot of people. Yeah. So, uh, you know, and I can be a little much sometimes for people

Just, just go to Moxie Talent Agency and say, yeah, yeah, big  Red, we need Big Red, uh, or, or bigger Red, they'll

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:12):

Know exactly what that means. Yeah.

Matt Black (01:00:13):

They can call me Bigger Red now because you're skinnier than me. Uh, but, uh, yeah, they, they do a  great job taking care of it. They schedule it and then, uh, send me, uh, calendar invites and all that. And  so, uh, they're fantastic. Anybody wants to work with a talent agency, they're, they're fantastic.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:29):

Yeah. I think I saw you last fall at a gala at Arrowhead. Oh, yeah. I think it was, um, mother's Refuge.

Matt Black (01:00:35):

Oh, yeah. I think was there.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:36):

Yeah. Right. Um, so you do a lot of stuff like that, right? Yeah. Yeah. Just kind of like to be there.

Matt Black (01:00:41):

Yeah, absolutely. It's, it's fun. And so, uh, there was actually, uh, Juju Juju was there at that gala, and so  know I become fan boy, and I'm like, okay. Can't look. Can't look. I can't go over there, can't go near 'em.  So I actually keep my distance, but they

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:56):

Have to all know who you are.

Matt Black (01:00:57):

Right. So, yeah. But I always keep my distance because they're there, because they're the star. Oh, you're  so, so I have to make sure that I, I, I, you know, recognize that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:01:05):

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my gosh, that's so good. Um, I was gonna ask too, do, uh, you worked with, there's  a girl who's like the lookalike almost Taylor Swift.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:01:30):

With the whole Taylor Casey connection? It's wild.

Matt Black (01:01:32):

Yeah. And she's been able to do some national commercials and things like that. She does a super cool  bowl commercial, just like I did. Uh, yeah. Uh, for the, for the, uh, Eagles, uh,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:01:40):

Cheese. I'll have to get her in here too.

Matt Black (01:01:41):

Uh, she's amazing. Yeah. She is such a good person. Uh, she basically reached out to me, uh, because she  wanted to know how I did it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:01:49):

Okay.

Matt Black (01:01:49):

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:14):

<laugh>? Well, that was another question I had for you, is what, are there any other, like, completely  unexpected invitations you got that you're like, oh, gosh, what do I do for this? Or appearances or, or  anything?

Matt Black (01:03:25):

Uh, so, uh, yeah. You know, uh, the senator from, uh, from, uh, Kansas who passed away, uh, Bob Dole  mm-hmm

Speaker 4 (01:03:57):

Yeah.

Matt Black (01:03:58):

And so, uh, you know, I try and be very authentic, uh, in it, uh, and, and have a lot of fun. And, and, uh,  you know, uh, if I don't think the script is good enough, you know, then I'll, no, I've gotta make it funnier,  you know? And, uh, it, it's just, uh, it's just been a lot of, a lot of good times. But, uh, yeah, when you get  somebody like that, uh, and that's happened multiple times where I've had celebrities or somebody reach  out to me, um, um, you know, uh, or, um, cameos that are set to people. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:27):

Um,

Matt Black (01:04:28):

You know, that, that's, that's really been cool.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:29):

I feel like you need to be a big slick, you need to be a part

Exactly they do. Yeah. Yeah. So what we do is we specialize in hyaluronic acid, uh, which

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:34):

Again, why your skin is so

Matt Black (01:07:35):

Beautiful. Yeah. Why your skin, why your joints, uh, you know, it's, uh, if you have the right type, it can  be anti-inflammatory. Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:07:41):

Uh,

Matt Black (01:07:42):

Especially, uh, on the skin, uh, a lot of times if you buy the cheap hyaluronic acid, 30 days later, you'll  break out. Okay. That's because if you buy the certain type, it can cause an inflammation on the skin.

Speaker 3 (01:07:53):

Yeah.

Matt Black (01:07:53):

So I spend a lot of my time at work training people all over the country. Our products are in Sprouts, so if  you want the purist hyaluronic acid products in Kansas City or anywhere else in the country, go to  Sprouts,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:06):

Go to your nearest,

Matt Black (01:08:07):

Or go to your Locus Health food store. There you go. And, uh, you'll find our products on the shelf. Uh,  but we are, we're the pioneers.

Matt Black (01:12:58):

Sorry, Chicagoans. I get ketchup on my hot dog.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:01):

It's people.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:10):

People,

Matt Black (01:13:10):

There's no doubt about it. Mm-hmm. I mean, uh, you can go anywhere in this city and, uh, feel like  you're, uh, welcomed. Mm-hmm

Speaker 3 (01:13:17):

<affirmative>.

Matt Black (01:13:18):

Uh, that's, that's a beautiful thing. Uh, I mean, uh, I, I find that everywhere, uh, you find people are very,  very helpful, even in the turbulent times that we live in

Speaker 3 (01:13:27):

And, uh, you know what? Everybody has got their opinions. They've got their voice. And, uh, you know,  and we, uh, we're pretty much, we allow everybody to express themselves here, whatever way they feel  like it. And I love that about being part of this city. I love that you can get somewhere quickly.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:45):

Yeah.

Matt Black (01:13:46):

Here.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:46):

Yes. Again, coming from Chicago, it

Matt Black (01:13:48):

Is, it

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:48):

Is so much better here than people sometimes

Matt Black (01:13:49):

Think that Chicago's my favorite skyline best. You know what? Same When you come from the north of  Kansas City at nighttime, and you're growing past the airport on 69, that's one of the most beautiful sites.

Speaker 3 (01:14:01):

Yeah.

Matt Black (01:14:01):

Uh, I love seeing our skyline at night mm-hmm <affirmative>. Because Kansas City is elevated on that  hill.

Speaker 3 (01:14:06):

Yep.

Matt Black (01:14:07):

And so it just looks like a, a beautiful, like a city of, of Oz, you know?

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:11):

It does. And I think too, with like the, um, Casey current stadium and all the things going in, it's just  getting even more beautiful,

Matt Black (01:14:18):

Especially when they light it up at night. Yeah. It's on the, and the colors that, uh, you don't see anywhere  else. Yep. I, I, you know, that is one thing that I call out all the time mm-hmm. Is, uh, you know, people,  uh, uh, think that, you know, Brittany, no, Holmes, I mean, she's just getting inducted into, I just saw into  her hall of fame at her school and things like that.

Speaker 3 (01:14:36):

Oh, she is

Matt Black (01:14:37):

Good for her soccer hall of fame. But, uh, yeah. I mean, she was a great soccer player. I know a lot of  people don know that she's great person, which is interesting. Uh, we have the only dedicated women's  stadium in the entire world right here in Kansas City.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:50):

Yeah.

Matt Black (01:14:50):

That's huge. Mm-hmm <affirmative>. I think we should have A-W-N-B-A team here in Kansas City.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:54):

Yeah.

Matt Black (01:14:55):

I think it, it would go over very, very well.

I think so too.

Matt Black (01:14:57):

Uh, so yeah. We,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:58):
