Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:00):

Richard Harper, Teal Man. Yes, ma'am. Welcome

Richard Harper (00:00:02):

To the

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:03):

Podcast. I'm glad to

Richard Harper (00:00:04):

Be here.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:05):

I mean, and thank you for coming as is. <laugh> We were emailing back and forth and you were like,

"Should I come as me? Should I come as Tealman?" I was like,

"If you can come as Tealman, you have

to. Like, I want people to see you. They know who you are.

" Absolutely. Absolutely. And this, we gotta

be, like, all in on it. So, um, so thank you for coming on. We, I actually came over because you're very

easy to spot, of course, when you're out anywhere. But, um, we were at, I think, the media day for the

Kansas City Diamonds, the new women's professional softball team. And I saw you and I was like,

"I

have to go talk to him.

" And we connected, and here you are.

Richard Harper (00:00:38):

Uh, again, super happy to be here. Uh, I'm just excited to dive in and talk about anything and everything.

Well,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:00:44):

We're gonna talk about it all. So many fun questions. Okay. So let's kinda start with. I always like to start

with two things, like, hit us with who Teal Man is. Then let's go backwards and get into your backstory.

Where you're from and kind of walk us through kind of the evolution of where you are today.

Richard Harper (00:00:58):

Uh, I, I feel like it becomes such a canned, uh, response, so I apologize if anything sounds very repeated,

but like -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:06):

No, you have to get it down so many people asking you. It

Richard Harper (00:01:08):

Really is, uh, it becomes a, an amalgamation of life experiences. It really, as people say different things,

you're like,

"I like that. That sounds right.

" And it, because that truly is what this is. It's a, it's an ama - an

amalgamation of life experiences. Yeah. Almost everything that I have has been gifted to me, given to

me, and I just put it together in a certain flair and do it in a certain way. The, the things that I bring to the

table are just the, maybe not the flashiest, but pretty flashy. The paint and the glitter beard, maybe the

fingernail polish.

Yeah. <laugh>

Richard Harper (00:01:39):

But other than that, like, everything else has been gifted to me and given to me and t - and it's just, I'm a

very sentimental guy, so

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:47):

It's just

Richard Harper (00:01:47):

That common, it's just that constant feeling of that community that is always there and has helped get me

here and what is going to help continue to get me forward in life.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:01:56):

Yeah. Yeah. So this all started with the Casey Current. Yes.

Richard Harper (00:02:00):

All of it,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:01):

Which was how many years ago that they - Five,

Richard Harper (00:02:03):

I wanna say about

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:04):

Five

Richard Harper (00:02:04):

Years ago.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:05):

Okay.

Richard Harper (00:02:05):

Uh, it's hard to remember exactly what -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:07):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:02:08):

I feel like the last five years have just been a blur of amazing opportunities and excitement. Yeah. Um,

but yeah, about five years ago when they were playing at the Kansas City Monarchs, which is kind ofwhere - Yeah. All this started. I had just moved up to Kansas City with my wife, uh, and was looking to

find something to make a constant. And I knew I, I love watching sports and athletics, being in marching

band all my life. I always watched athletics, so I,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:02:35):

It's

Richard Harper (00:02:35):

Something that I've always enjoyed. Um, and so was getting around to the different areas, been, you

know, to the Royals, been to a few other things, but Monarchs was, uh, a ni - I love baseball, so it was a

great place to, to go. Uh, not too hard on the, uh, the pocketbooks. So you can definitely just make an

easy night of it anytime. Um, and just a great atmosphere, great, great food, everything about. I can't gush

enough about others. <laugh> But I was there watching a game and they had an announcement over the

speaker, uh, you know, like they do about all kinds of promotions about,

"Hey, uh, the, uh, Kansas City

has the, uh, women's soccer team. They're gonna be playing this next week.

" And I was like,

"I would

love to see that.

" I've always loved supporting the women's sports, uh, while playing in marching band

and while playing in pep bands.

(00:03:21):

So it's just always that kind of connection. I grew up in kind of a very feminist household. My, my mother

was the breadwinner of

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:28):

The

Richard Harper (00:03:28):

Family. Uh, my, uh, she played sports a lot. I grew up hearing stories about, uh, when my dad was in the

Air Force over in Japan, she played in a softball team over there. Uh, when they moved back after, uh, he

retired from the Air Force. Uh, they were in Arizona and she played in an indoor mixed soccer t - uh,

league because they didn't have just women's soccer teams

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:49):

Back

Richard Harper (00:03:49):

Then. Yeah. So, like, hearing these things of how active my mother was, not just hearing it, but seeing, I

mean, my mother is, uh, we'll say in her 70s. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:03:58):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:03:58):

And I swear that woman can still out hike me. So I -Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:01):

Good for her. I,

I love her. She's one of my biggest, if not my biggest role model in life. Uh, and so - Is

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:07):

She here in Kansas City?

Richard Harper (00:04:08):

Uh, she is not. She is, uh, in the homestead I grew up in down in Fort Scott, Kansas. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:13):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:04:13):

Actually five miles north of that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:15):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:04:15):

Uh, but that's where I, I grew up in, is in Southeast Kansas. But she lives there, uh, to this day. Uh, and,

uh, just, just a firecracker. An amazing

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:25):

Woman, she sounds like. Yes. Um,

Richard Harper (00:04:27):

Absolutely.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:27):

I love that. I was gonna say, where did your love for women's sports come from so early? I almost feel

like that's kind of progressive of you, right? It's, it's just - I mean -

Richard Harper (00:04:36):

A- again, I grew up in a, I will s - I will say a, a progressive household, I think.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:04:41):

I love it. I

Richard Harper (00:04:41):Think that, uh, my, again, my mother was the breadwinner. My, my father, uh, had a small business that

he helped my grandmother run. That's one of the reasons we came to Fort Scott is they were living in, uh,

Phoenix, Arizona when I was born. And then my grandmother was like,

"Hey, son, would you be able to

maybe come back and help me out?" So they said,

"Absolutely. Family's always been very strong for us.

"

So they, he moved back there, helped, uh, my grandmother run the business until she basically retired and

then he took over. But my mother worked basically two jobs all my life. Uh, so she's always been the

breadwinner, but has always been a strong staunch supporter of everything that I do, whether it's the arts,

uh, athletics, anything and everything, and has always been a strong proponent of equality for, for

everybody.

(00:05:29):

I mean,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:29):

She sounds like an amazing role model, and I would love to meet her. <laugh> I would,

Richard Harper (00:05:32):

I would love for you

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:32):

To talk to her.

'Cause that sounds very much like me. I'm a mom with two daughters. We're all about,

like, I'm driven. I love working. Um - You could sit and

Richard Harper (00:05:41):

Talk with her - Yeah. For

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:42):

A week and not get

Richard Harper (00:05:43):

Enough.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:05:44):

I bet.

Richard Harper (00:05:45):

Like, it's, she's filled with stories from back when she, uh, rode, uh, dirt bikes with my dad in, uh, Arizona

in the desert, and she couldn't touch, so she had to go over to the, uh, the side to touch on the side before,

because she couldn't touch on the side, so she had to go over to the curb to, to stop. Is she,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:04):

Is she small? Yes, she's very small.

Richard Harper (00:06:06):She's little five two, I wanna say is

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:07):

How tall

Richard Harper (00:06:08):

She is.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:08):

Oh, yeah.

Richard Harper (00:06:09):

Uh, but just everything and anything bet - I mean, she, she hunted a pronghorn in Arizona. Wow. She,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:15):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:06:15):

Went overseas to Japan. She, just a small farm girl who was raised with a don't quit, try anything attitude

because she had to. Yeah. And,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:25):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:06:26):

Just, yeah. She's an amazing woman.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:28):

So what did she say when you called her or showed up and said,

<laugh>

"Guess what, mom? Teal man is here.

"

Richard Harper (00:06:35):

She just laughed at,

"Oh, just, you're just like your granddaddy. You're ju - oh, you just so, always so

silly. You just always just had such a character just go on and on.

"

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:06:45):

Is that true? Is your grandfather somebody that you remember?

Richard Harper (00:06:48):

My grandfather - You remember? Her, her father, uh, was always a big goof. Uh, I grew up having a

double build hat that he would wear. Uh, he would for, for goofs for like the, uh, for the, uh, uh, not for

the shriners. Well, no, he was also a shriner.Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:03):

Okay.

Richard Harper (00:07:03):

Uh, he would, uh, dress up like in a dress for, uh, he'd drive around in the little car. He was a big, just a

big lover of life. Yeah. A big goof. A big, just a big lovable goon. Blast to be around.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:13):

Yeah. Amazing. Okay, so how did you come up with the concept to do this? Where did the idea start?

Richard Harper (00:07:18):

Going back to just all the life experiences. So, uh, growing up, uh, I, I did marching band. I, it, everything

kinda comes back to, uh, those choices that you make in life. Uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:30):

I'm, I'm really big on, it's really interesting. The older you get, the more you can look back and connect

the dots. Yeah. It sounds really basic and obvious, but it is really fascinating once you get to that point to

be like,

"Oh, okay. Here it is. That what it is. It makes sense now how I was able to get here.

" Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:07:43):

Exactly.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:07:43):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:07:44):

Uh, and you just keep going back and go,

"Oh, fuck, because five-year-old me did that.

" Yeah.

"Oh,

(00:07:48):

Because 12-year-old me did that.

" But I, I made that switch, uh, in, in middle school of like, well, it, it's

sports or, or music. And I grew up listening to music. I, uh, my parents were older when they had me, so

I, I grew up listening to, uh, Glen Miller's orchestra. I watched a lot. I watched, uh, uh, Cary Grant and all

those guys, the real triple threats who could sing, dance and act, all that. Yeah. So that's what I grew up.

So I was like,

"I really wanna, I wanna play music.

" I've always been attracted to music, even with my

hearing disability. Uh, so it's, I chose, I, I wanna play trumpet. And I feel like that's really where

everything has started is that decision to, even with a hearing disability, going into music. Uh, and -

Which by

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:08:31):

The way, I did not know you had a hearing disability. Yeah. I, I wear, uh, do

Richard Harper (00:08:35):

Wear hearing aids. OhMindy Hargesheimer (00:08:35):

Perfect. Uh - I didn't even notice them. Yeah. The camouflage into the paint.

Richard Harper (00:08:39):

They, they really do. They really do. And they, honestly, technology has gotten so much better over the

years. They've gotten a lot smaller. They're not as clunky. They've gotten a lot better. Uh, but with that

decision of going into music, doing marching band, I always love, you know, you see, uh, the rah-rah pep

band and seeing all those super fans that paint their whole bodies and all that. And I was like,

"Man, that

would be so fun to do. I'd always love to do that.

" But being a marching band, you don't always get that

opportunity. Sure. So when I got to college, our, my, uh, hard hitting Doug Whitten, bless his soul, uh, I

miss him. I. Anyway, uh, uh, he had a heart attack a few years ago, so he's no longer with us, but an

amazing man taught me a lot of life lessons.

(00:09:18):

But anyway, I was like, he always wanted to, wanted you to make the marching band yours. Like, he's the

director, but it's like, you've got to buy into it. It has to be what you want it to be. Yeah. So

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:29):

Make

Richard Harper (00:09:29):

It the band you want it to be. So I, uh, approached him one day. I was like,

"Hey, can I paint my fa - like,

I know I have to wear the whole uniform, but as long as it's school colors, can I just paint my face?" He's

like,

"Is it gonna mess up what you're playing?" I said,

"No.

" Not

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:41):

At all? Do

Richard Harper (00:09:41):

It. So I did. And so it, it just started from there. Uh - And this

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:45):

Is at what age?

Richard Harper (00:09:46):

Uh, this is, uh, in, in, uh, college. Okay. So about, let's say 2006 to 2014. Um - Okay,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:53):

Great. You

Richard Harper (00:09:54):

Know, a lot of people go to college to, for seven years. Most of them are called doctors, but I just really

enjoyed college. Or who?Mindy Hargesheimer (00:09:59):

Van Wilder? Did Van Wilder in the movie?

Richard Harper (00:10:01):

You

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:01):

Know, Van- Van

Richard Harper (00:10:02):

Wilder, uh, did, uh, a few others. Uh, Chris Farley's character and Tommy Boy. No

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:07):

Doubt.

Richard Harper (00:10:08):

Uh, so, you know, that's, uh, but yeah. All

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:10):

Great legacies.

Richard Harper (00:10:11):

All great legacies, right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:12):

Join them. <laugh>

Richard Harper (00:10:13):

Uh, but anyway, so in marching band, that's where, so that's where the face painting started coming in. So

I just started doing it in marching band for every parade, every home game. It was a fun way to just -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:21):

School colors or what was it?

Richard Harper (00:10:22):

School colors. Yeah, school colors. Yeah. So it'd always be, uh, crimson and gold with some black

thrown in there, but usually th- those are the, the colors - Yeah. Uh, that I had. And then when I graduated

college, went into teaching, I became a, uh, a, uh, music educator. And I was the assistant director of

bands down in USD 446, uh, Independence, Kansas. Okay. Uh, while I was down there doing marching

band, I, I wanted, uh, the kids to have that buy-in too, and also being a younger guy, trying to connect

with them. You, when you're working with middle schoolers, it's a weird age where it's, as I'm sure you're

aware - Oh, yeah.Mindy Hargesheimer (00:10:59):

Where

Richard Harper (00:10:59):

It's, they really still wanna be your best friend, but at the same time, they're too cool for you and they're

too cool for school. And everything is embarrassing because you don't want to be cringe. And I get that.

Uh-huh. I totally, totally do. As someone who deals with anxiety and stuff, I - Yep.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:14):

1000%

Richard Harper (00:11:14):

Richard Harper (00:11:16):

<laugh> So, but I, so I was like,

"All right, I'll make you a deal. You show up, do your, you know, tinsel

around your instruments, lights. I'll show up even better, I promise you.

" And so I did, and I surprised

them with a big old glitter beard. Uh, and it just became a tradition after that. Every holiday parade, I did

a glitter beard, and I would try to do a different color, different scheme every year just to make it

different. And it ended up with ornaments and all kinds of colors, and I've got the five - Oh my.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:42):

Four or five

Richard Harper (00:11:42):

Years of all the different ones I did.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:44):

I need pictures of that. It's so

Richard Harper (00:11:45):

Good. I'll have to find them and send

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:46):

Them to you. Yes, please do.

Richard Harper (00:11:48):

Um, but -Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:49):

And so the glitter beard, does this go back like 15, 20 years then? Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:11:53):

Crazy.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:53):

Okay.

Richard Harper (00:11:54):

2015, 2016, I would say.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:11:57):

So this has had a life of its own for longer than we ever knew. <laugh> Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:11:59):

I love it. Exactly. And then so after I, I moved up to Kansas City, I, well, I met my, my now wife.

Mm-hmm.

Richard Harper (00:12:06):

Uh, and she is a, uh, a big theater nerd, which I am too. Great. So it's a

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:11):

Great

Richard Harper (00:12:11):

Thing for the both of us to be compatible like that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:12:13):

Uh-huh.

Richard Harper (00:12:14):

Uh, need to have somebody that I can just belt with in the car and not care about how I sound. <laugh>

Um, but, uh, so we moved up here for, to give her some more opportunities and, uh, experiences for

theater, uh, here in Kansas City, which there's so many more. Yeah, you had a good experience. Or she.

She has had a great experience. I've had a great experience seeing her have a great experience because of

just the sheer opportunities that are there. Whereas in a small town, I'm not knocking small towns. I'm a

small town boy. Yeah. I grew up in it. I think there are so many good things about small towns. The issue

is just the resources. Sure. When you only have one theater production a year and it's geared towards whois it the children. Mm-hmm. Because we want to get them invested and get them learning.

(00:12:59):

And so it needs to be a safe place for them. Unfortunately, that means the older you get, you kind of age

out and then you start to lose that thing that you become so interested in that's been your drive for years.

Yeah. And as someone who got to do music at the thing I love so passionately - Yeah.

(00:13:17):

Got to do that. I was like, I can't see someone that I care for so deeply n - like just squash that

opportunity. Yeah. So - Good

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:13:25):

For you.

Richard Harper (00:13:26):

Let's move where you can be. Well, that, that, good for my mom. She taught me that. Yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:13:29):

Like it's,

Richard Harper (00:13:30):

It's about equality.

It is, it is about a relationship. It's about conversation. It is about open and honest conversation with two

people deciding what it is that makes it work together. And in letting, I want to give her as many

opportunities as I've had.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:13:47):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:13:48):

So getting to get up here, she's had so many opportunities. She's now actually, uh, doing her second music

director position for, uh, uh, she, her first one was Adam's family and now this one she is doing Avenue Q

that she's working on right now which is one of my -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:05):

Avenue Q way back in the day in Ne York. Oh, it's

Richard Harper (00:14:06):

One of my favorite music. Yeah. It's

Richard Harper (00:14:08):

My second

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:08):

Favorite. Well, it makes sense, right? With all the characters - Yes. And the colors and everything.

Richard Harper (00:14:12):

Yeah. So good. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:13):

So

Richard Harper (00:14:13):

It's just, yes. And I love, I love characters.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:16):

So she's doing that through who? Uh,

Richard Harper (00:14:18):

A

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:22):

Thousand times.

Richard Harper (00:14:23):

Um, but, but that's because she's done so many different theater opportunities.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:26):

Totally fair. But she's doing it from afar essentially because -

Richard Harper (00:14:29):

So she's, uh, yeah, she's doing it down in, I wanna say Shawnee, or no, she's, uh, I mean, she's done

productions in the mall, uh, in that theater in the mall, uh, at Oak Park. She, has done theater in the park

where Adam's family was inmate by Oak Park.Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:45):

So Avenue Q is here?

Richard Harper (00:14:47):

Avenue Q will be here in Kansas City. I do not remember which theater it is yet. That's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:14:51):

Okay. We can look it up later. Yes. Yes, yes. Oh, good for her. But that's amazing. Okay. So good. So

good. Shout out for that.

But getting her up here, uh, well, not getting her, but getting us up here as an educator, I was like, there's

teaching positions out the wazoo. Yeah. Um, we don't need to get into that. That's a whole, we could have

a whole other conversation about that. <laugh> Um, but, um, with education, I was like,

"I can find a job

up here.

" And I did. I was very fortunate, uh, to land a position, uh, with North Kansas City School

District. Okay. I taught for two years, uh, in the adaptive music program. Okay. So I adapted the music

classroom for, uh, the special ed classrooms, uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:28):

Amazing.

Richard Harper (00:15:28):

For a vast and wide range, which was very eye-opening to me as an ed - not just as an educator, but as a

person who also was a part of the, as back then I didn't realize, SPED program. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:43):

And

Richard Harper (00:15:43):

Seeing what SPED pro - the SPED program is and what incl - it includes these days has just been eye

opening - I bet.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:51):

And

Richard Harper (00:15:52):

Very, uh, very emotional and rewarding in so many good ways. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:15:59):

And just

Richard Harper (00:15:59):Also very stressful because it's - Sure.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:01):

It's

Richard Harper (00:16:02):

A hard, hard world. Um, but - Did

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:04):

You intentionally, did you think you were gonna get into SPED? No. Or did it just land in your lap and

then - That just kind of,

Richard Harper (00:16:10):

It just landed in my lap. The

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:11):

Universe knew somehow this is gonna be a good fit for you. Yeah. And your empathy and, yeah.

Richard Harper (00:16:16):

And I, I, in that, it landed me the opportunity to, since I was no longer an assistant director, so I wasn't, I

didn't have a marching band. I was like, I reached out to the, the different high schools and like,

"Hey, I

have a lot of experience. I love doing this. I would love to, let me volunteer some time to help out.

" Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:33):

And so through then I helped out, uh, with Oak Park High School, uh, the Northmen. Uh, I immensely

enjoyed that experience. Mm-hmm. Uh, but that, again, opened me to other experiences and other things

that opened me to more sports and other things and -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:16:49):

Yeah. And

Richard Harper (00:16:49):

Just all that led me basically to eventually I have stepped away from education. I now work in

transportation. Okay. Uh, it's been a very much more, uh, I'm, I'm music. You can make your schedule. I

don't words. Yeah, I can make my, my flexibility and the ability to not have the anxiety and the cortisol

levels rise because me wanting to pursue something that is so meaningful to me might be detrimental and

impactful on 30 to potentially 300 students.Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:23):

Right.

Richard Harper (00:17:24):

Yeah. So

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:24):

It's one

Richard Harper (00:17:24):

Of those things where it's like, I've got to pick and choose my priorities. Mm-hmm. I can still do the thing

I love in another way. I'll find that avenue. There are so many ways to approach music, theater, the arts.

Let's just say the arts. The arts,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:39):

Yeah. I can

Richard Harper (00:17:40):

Find, especially here in Kansas City.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:42):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:17:42):

So I was like,

"I'll figure something out.

" So I stepped away from that, stepped into, uh, transportation,

and that has allowed me the flexibility to now really focus on Tealman and now allowed me to want to

make it hopefully a full-time gig. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:17:57):

So. Okay. So you've been in transportation for how long?

Uh, two and a half, three. No, three years now. Three

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:03):

Years. Okay. Um, so then that gives you the ability to choose to get to all the games. Yeah. So I, I'm able

to - And any other festivities.

Richard Harper (00:18:10):

Yeah. I've had a lot of amazing bosses over the years. Yeah. I, I, I, it's weird to want to talk about your

boss, but legitimately, the boss I have at this position, he's so great. I text him every week,

"Hey, I'm

available these days.

" And he lets me know,

"Okay.

" Or he'll say,

"Hey, is this a possibility if we're really

weigh down?" But because - Yeah. In transportation, you don't, it is a week to week business. Yeah. So itallows us the, allows me the flexibility and I can't, I can't thank him enough for him allowing me to do

this. Well,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:18:40):

That's amazing. Yeah. I think, yeah, you're right. Not everybody has the best experience. We've had good,

I've had good bosses, I've had bad bosses. I am now my own boss, so I like my boss right now. <laugh>

Um, but, you know, I have been there. So that is great though, to be able to shout out a great boss. Yes. So

good for him or her, whoever that is. So awesome. Yeah. Okay. Let's talk about how long does it take you

to get ready?

Richard Harper (00:19:02):

It, that is a loaded question. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:05):

And the

Richard Harper (00:19:05):

Short answer that I'll tell real quick and then we can get into it. Uh, the short answer is an hour. Okay.

Takes an hour to put everything all together. Uh, the paint, the beard, the makeup, all the stuff. Uh,

basically what I did for you was an hour's worth of putting it together to kind of give - And

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:19:20):

Thank you. An

Richard Harper (00:19:21):

Idea. <laugh> Um, if I'm really getting into it, it takes me anywhere from two to four hours. Wow.

Because I really. It's kinda like getting. Let's just put it like getting ready for a date. Do you wanna feel

rushed to get ready for a date? No. If you're putting that much work into your do - Uh-huh. You wanna

make sure it looks good. The presentation is good and you feel good and confident about what you're

doing. Sure. Because at the end of the day, it is makeup and you're throwing it out for everybody to look

at. Yeah. Then look at you. So, uh, I like to take anywhere from two to four hours, depending on what it

is I'm doing, especially during these hot months. So I, like, I did a, two layers of paint for you. Okay. But

when I'm going out for game day, I'll do anywhere from two to sometimes five layers, depending on

where it needs it, how it sets, uh, b - depending on how, just depending on how everything settles and

everything, because as I'm working, if it's not totally cool, I start to sweat, then you have to work on that.

Richard Harper (00:20:28):

things that I love to learn about my favorite co-partner. Mm-hmm. Uh, which is like just those, essentially

what it is to be a, a, a little girl of going like,

"I really suck at doing nail polish. It's like, oh, how do you.

Whoa.

" Like, and, and just truly having the appre - like, I already appreciate my wife. I appreciate when

people go out of the way to make themselves look good. But boy, does it come over tenfold doing it

"Girl, you look great today. I, that's a three hour job if I saw one and you nailed it. Great job.

" Uh, so -

That isMindy Hargesheimer (00:21:50):

Amazing.

Richard Harper (00:21:51):

It just gives me so much more appreciation now. <laugh> Uh, but so yeah, so it starts with the primer and

then I do usually one base layer of the paint across the neck from the back forward because the - Are we

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:22:03):

Brushing? Are we, what are we doing?

Richard Harper (00:22:05):

It's a brush. I didn't bring it with me that I usually have it extra, but, uh, yeah. So I have a little, a little, uh,

little, uh, not a carafe, but a little tin of paint that I use. Yeah. Uh, and, uh, I use that. And it's a, it's a

painting brush that I've kind of trimmed the way I want. I've used s - I've experimented with some

makeup brushes, but those things cost money. Yeah, they sure do. And I don't wanna ruin my wife's and

especially a lot of those get really expensive. Yeah. So I have now just, I've got really one, two

paintbrushes that I've just kind of trimmed that I like very specific. The way just that they work. I'm sure

there are better brushes. If someone wants to sponsor me, I'll use them. We're

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:22:43):

Gonna look for a sponsor. Yep. Yes. Makeup

Richard Harper (00:22:45):

Company.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:22:46):

But,

Richard Harper (00:22:47):

Uh, so, but I use a, a paintbrush and I literally paint it on and it, uh, while that sets and dries - Uh-huh. I

have a red beard. Well, it's a hair wax. Okay. Temporary hair wax. I believe it's Mofa Yang. Um, and I

use that and I'll put a good base layer on for that, uh, for a good undercoat. Once I have a good base layer

of that, I go back to a second layer of paint.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:09):

Okay. Uh,

Richard Harper (00:23:10):

And then I go back to the beard. And it's kind of that process of touch up, where does it need, but giving

things a chance to settle and dry - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:17):

So

I can go,

"Ah, make that better. Ooh, fix that.

" Yep.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:21):

And

Richard Harper (00:23:21):

Put it all together. Once everything is the way I like it enough - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:26):

Then I

Richard Harper (00:23:27):

Get, uh, you know, those big tubs of just the cheap hair gel? Oh, yeah. I get one of those and a hair

coloring brush, which is, I found is just works the best. Uh-huh. Uh, and I take that and I put a base layer

of that, almost like a primer for all the guys out there, like you would like with mustard, as mustard for a

binder for barbecue. So like I,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:23:47):

I

Richard Harper (00:23:47):

Use that as just like a primer as a binder. And then I have my own blend of glitter that I have mixed

together of some chunky red hexagons, uh, the, the blue that you see, some lighter teal. And I mix that all

together as just a big chunky blend and I cover the whole beard. And the

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:05):

Browse. And the brows.

Richard Harper (00:24:06):

Clearly.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:24:06):

Well,

Richard Harper (00:24:07):

Yeah, the browser actually later, but I do the whole beard. And once the beard is covered with that, I go

back over with ultra fine of two different types of ultra fine, uh, that I've used. One that's a ho - more of a

holographic, one that's just the red. And I go back over with the ultra fine. And then from there,

whatever's sprinkled on la- later because I'm trying to waste not so I - Can imagine. Try to save as much

and u- utilize everything that I can. Uh, and then from there, a little bit of gel on the eyebrows. And then I

use the mix that's already fallen on the sink. Uh-huh. And I use that. I'm not unhygienic. Let's go back. So

before I start -

To be clear.

Richard Harper (00:24:45):

Um, to be clear, before all the glitter goes down, I hear so much all the time, I bet your house is a mess it's

covered with glitter. It can be, but - You like also - I do also clean, but also, uh, like I, there's, there's a

process. I take the sink and I put just a little dab of water. Mm-hmm. Just, just a little bit damp. And then I

take a saran wrap and I cover two layers over the sink. So then as it

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:11):

Falls,

Richard Harper (00:25:12):

It all falls onto the saran wrap. Smart. And then when I'm done, I can just wrap it up. That's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:17):

It. Yeah, there you go. Throw it

Richard Harper (00:25:18):

Away. And I have so much. This is from learned experiences. Yeah. I've gone through a few bottles of

Drano. <laugh> You

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:24):

Know,

Richard Harper (00:25:24):

You learn, you live and you learn. You

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:26):

Can't have a perfect track record of it, so. Exactly. Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:25:29):

But through working with that, uh, uh, so yeah, I put the saran wrap. And that way that's where all the

glitter falls. It's not just falling into the sink going down the drain. Yeah. So

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:37):

That way

Richard Harper (00:25:37):

I collect a lot of it. And I actually recycle quite a bit of it for other projects, things like that. Yeah.

Because I know glitter is not necessarily the most biodegradable. Sure. I have used biodegradable glitter

and it just, it unfortunately just does not do - Yeah. The same

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:52):

Thing. Until somebody makes that. Until

Richard Harper (00:25:53):

Somebody gets that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:25:54):

You got something that, yeah, works. Yeah. Yeah. And edible glitter is - How do you get into every

crevals? I mean, like, how, like, you are like Blue Man group. I was telling my daughter - Pretty much

pretty Blue Man

Richard Harper (00:26:04):

Group.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:26:05):

I showed her a picture yesterday of Blue Man Group, and she, because I told her that you were coming

on, and she was like,

"Who's Blue Man Group?" I'm like,

"Of course you're nine. You don't know who

that is. Pull them up and she's like,

" Oh my gosh.

"She couldn't believe it. <laugh> I was like,

" They get it

down to, like, the f - the tiniest corner of eyes in the ears.

You know, I mean, I would chalk that up to being, like, 99.9%. Yeah. I would never know any different

that you could get any closer, so.

Richard Harper (00:26:28):

It's, it's, it's, uh, you know, again, learned experiences. I've gotten some paint in the eyes. I've had to throw

away some contacts. Yeah. You know, you, you live and you learn. You, you experience things and

hopefully you go,

"That didn't work.

" You know, the defin - the definition of insanity is doing the same

thing over and over, not changing anything, e- expecting different results. Right. So trying to change

something and do something a little bit different every time and see what works and repeat the processeswhen I can. Yeah.

How many home matches?

Richard Harper (00:27:04):

Uh, there are this season - I should know this. 14. Um, but we started with, I wanna say 12 home matches

Richard Harper (00:30:51):

This past year.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:30:52):

Amazing. So

Richard Harper (00:30:53):

That was a lot of fun. Yeah,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:30:55):

We'll have to talk about that.

Richard Harper (00:30:56):

Um, so yeah, all of it is just, it, little things piece by piece coming together and it all becomes its own

story. And it's - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:31:04):

It's

Richard Harper (00:31:05):

Now it's everyone, someone sees me, it's, oh, it's what I've always had, but it's not. It's all slowly come

together. The people that see me all the time that's kind of become this little family where I stand in the

stands - Yeah. They give me a hard time every now

(00:31:18):

And then I was like,

"Barrow, watch it. Your belt's gonna fall.

" 'Cause I keep adding more and more stuff

and I'm like, I know eventually I'm gonna have to retire. There is going to be an official retirement of a

whole bunch of stuff and I'm going to have to purchase new things. Sure. Like I, I've reti - Kansas City

Current has been amazing to me. The players have been amazing to me. The ownership's been amazing to

me. I can't gush enough about it. But like they've given me so many things that I just, I've had to retire

over the years. Yeah. I've had that big foam necklace that people have seen me with on the chain. It just, Ijump around, it gets bent, it gets dinged, it gets a lot of stuff - Yeah. Gets covered in glitter. So I've retired

both of those. I retired my, uh, original Teal Man glasses that were given to me, uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:31:58):

Do these end up on display in your house somewhere or - They, they do.

Richard Harper (00:32:01):

Okay. I, I'm eventually - I would hope so. I'm slowly getting into the streaming. Yeah. So I'm, I'm

figuring out that whole, I feel so old just talking about it that way. That's okay. You can try that one. But

I'm still getting into the technological side of things of wanting to make e- essentially a streaming booth

so when I do online interviews and stuff - Yeah. I can have a place that shows all the things.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:32:21):

You do. You need like the Teal Man Museum. Well, I've got - If it'll just keep building.

Richard Harper (00:32:24):

I've got multiple paintings that have been done for me. Oh, sweet. I've got a caricature. Like basically

everything that I've done, like all the armbands I've gotten for when I went to the, the championship when

they had the championship here, uh, at, uh, CPKC, I still

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:32:39):

Have

Richard Harper (00:32:39):

The, all those armbands. I keep almost everything given to me.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:32:43):

Do people, like, where do, where do you get the caricatures and paintings? Do people bring them to a

game and give it to you? Do people mail them to you?

Richard Harper (00:32:50):

I've gotten them as gifts. I've gotten them, like, uh, the caricature, uh, Amazon, uh, flew me down to, uh,

Orlando - Nice. Uh, for a, uh, a - I think I saw you

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:00):

There. A stint

Yeah. Uh, I can't remember which, it wasn't no matter how you fan, but it was, again, I've worked with

Prime for a few years. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:07):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:33:08):

Uh, but they flew me down there and so they just let me go do a lot of fun things on their dime and -

That's

Yeah. And, and, and they're like,

"Hey, would you like...

" I was like,

"Yeah, I would love to get

caricature.

" Uh-huh. So like, uh, the, uh, the painting, uh, one painting was given to me as a gift. Another

one is, uh, a, a friend of mine, a former student that is just an amazing artist.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:33:31):

Aw. And

Richard Harper (00:33:32):

I was like,

"Hey, is there any way to do, like, a cool, like, old-fashioned picture of me with a glitter

beard?" And she goes,

"I'll figure it out.

" Oh, you bet. Yeah. And so, uh, it was, like, one of the first

names that was thrown out there before I officially settled on Teal Man was, like, K- Kansas City Current

kind of threw out there like a King Richard. Yeah. Uh, and so for a while, there was just kinda like that

whole, like,

"Well, maybe King Richard might be away.

" So I, it's essentially, it's me sitting on a throne

with a big old glitter beard, and it's, it's amazing, amazing painting. I love

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:02):

That. Is that, like, above your mantle or something? It, it's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:08):

Richard Harper (00:34:09):

But yeah. So just all these different things I get from, from everywhere.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:13):

Okay. So walk me through the very first time you went to a game like this. What was the reaction? What

was that experience like for you and seemingly for other people around you?

Richard Harper (00:34:24):

My, I still, like, that day, as someone who suffers from anxiety - Uh-huh. I still look back and go,

did I do that?" Yeah. But it's, it just also goes back to, like, all the other things like -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:34:41):

The

Or break it. We're trying. I didn't have a glitter beard for that first one. I just had the red, uh, beard wax

and the blue paint. And was

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:35:13):

This - And that's what I did. At, um -

Richard Harper (00:35:15):

Children's Mercy. Children's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:35:16):

Mercy. I was gonna say where Monarch's played,

Richard Harper (00:35:19):

But - They were there. No, so that was at Children's Mercy. That's where I went to, uh, it started just

going to, I think, two games at, uh, the Monarchs Legends Field. Mm-hmm. Went to, I wanna say, seven

games that first year at Children's Mercy's and I was like,

"Okay, we, we. I want...

" I begged my wife. I

was like,

"We, I know we gotta work it into the budget. Can we please get season tickets? Yes, let's do it.

"

Yeah. So we got season tickets so I could get to every game. I missed a few games due to some, like,

teaching things and stuff. Sure. But, like, I got to go to almost every match. And so it's just - Pretty

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:35:51):Near perfect track record, I'msure.

Richard Harper (00:35:52):

But that, but so, but that's that first match though, walking in at C - at Children's Mercy and just seeing

the looks of, like,

"What was that? Whoa.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:02):

Do you see that?" There's probably a lot of envy going on, like -

Richard Harper (00:36:06):

I don't know about that. But it definitely. I still see that look every game of people just like,

"Oh, but

what?" Like, not even a double, a triple take sometimes. And the kids are. I. Kids have no filter and

sometimes that's the worst, but also sometimes the best. <laugh> So you just see a kid, like, just holding.

Lid on, just holding something and. <laugh> Dad,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:27):

Did

Richard Harper (00:36:27):

"He's blue.

" <laugh> Like, you just, like, it -

You're like, uh, is he really? Teal. Yeah. Yeah. And yeah, that's usually, like, it's teal, but it is in the blue

family. Thank you. Right, right. Thank you. Yeah. Uh, primary color is great. We'll talk about the others.

Lesson about

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:36:52):

Yes. Uh, but no, I, it's my favorite one is just, yeah, the, the. And then the ins - the, the shock and the

"Hi.

" Yeah.

"You had a good day?" "Yeah, good. Have fun. Bye.

"Well,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:37:05):

They. I'm sure a lot of people though you were like in some sort of official mascot too, or probably still

do, but - I still

Richard Harper (00:37:10):Get that. It's like,

" Oh, are you the, are you the, like, the mascot? "I'm like,

" No, I'm, I'm just a diehard

super fan. Uh, just wants to do my part.

"I, I feel like if I were to put a name on it these days, it's, it's more

like ambassador or something.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:37:25):

Okay, yeah.

Richard Harper (00:37:26):

That's

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:37:26):

A good word.

Richard Harper (00:37:27):

I, I just, I want to, as I found though, not just Kansas City, I wanna help support Kansas Current and get

out there and support them and spread the news as best I can, but I found now I just really wanna just

support women's sports in general.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:37:42):

Well, and obviously you can't quantify it in any way, shape or form, but there's no doubt you have helped

the fandom of the Kansas City Current with what you have done. I appreciate that. Thank you. Obviously,

you know that. But I mean, that, that would be incredible if you could really measure, like, what you've

done, because it's huge. Oh,

Richard Harper (00:37:58):

And it's, it's just seeing the impact through the, the, uh, the years of, you know, I, I wanna stay humble

people have -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:38:22):

That's when you know you've made it,

Richard Harper (00:38:23):

Right? <laugh> Yeah. And it's like, ah, I'm there. Yeah. I did it. <laugh> I, and it's just, I, I love it. I

absolutely love it because it, it's, it, I don't feel like it's taking away from me at all. It's just, it's adding, it's

basically saying,

"Hey, it's okay to be a weirdo sometimes. It's okay to have whimsy.

" Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:38:42):

I

Richard Harper (00:38:42):Feel like we've been shoved these stereotypes down our throats for so long. Yeah. And it's just like, I was

told for so, so long, my mother still gets onto me,

"Why do you paint your nails?" I'm like,

"'Cause I like

it.

" <laugh> Because I like shiny things. I like pretty things. I've always liked pretty things, mother. I've

loved flowers. I've loved singing. I've loved dancing. I've loved the arts. I've loved painting. Uh-huh. I

love pretty things.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:39:06):

Yep.

Richard Harper (00:39:06):

So that's just really what it comes down to. So I like to see shiny things. And it's another way to be like,

"Hey, guess what? I love this team.

" <laugh> So it's, it may not always be the colors, but it, it's just

shining and giving that pop of, hey, I'm a big, loud, bright, shining character. Can

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:39:21):

Richard Harper (00:39:51):

I've done a few things now. A, the big beard and wearing a lot of current stuff, because even when I'm not

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:02):

And you have a distinct beard too.

Richard Harper (00:40:03):

Yeah. I've got a pretty big beard. Yeah. I am, I am bald. But for the most part, like, when I'm out in

public, I'm wearing, like, wearing hat and glasses. I'm just another bald-headed, bearded, red-blooded

American you can see walking down any street in middle America. Yeah. So it does allow me a little bit

of, of anonymity. Whew, I said it.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:24):

Anonymity. Anonymity.

Richard Harper (00:40:26):

Don't hurt yourself, kid. <laugh> Um, but yeah, so it does allow me a little bit of anonymity there. Uh, but

I still get recognized sometimes. Uh, not where I'm living now, but the previous apartment - uh-huh.

"I-

"I'm so sorry. I

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:40:56):

Are you him?

I am. I am him. Thanks if that helps me with my apartment application. Thank you very much. Uh, but

no, I am.

Richard Harper (00:41:04):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:05):

Richard Harper (00:41:06):

Uh, but, uh, but no. So I, I, every now and then I do get recognized. Uh, but also just because I have a lot

of friends, I, I, I, I want everyone who meets me to feel welcomed and feel like they matter in my bubble.

Yeah. So that way, you know, there's enough hatred in the world. I feel like if anybody can love, or if

every. Words are hard. I music again. <laugh> I count to four mostly. Word

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:32):

Solid.

Richard Harper (00:41:32):

Yes. Um, if people can hate people for no reason in the world, let me be one little person who can love

people for no reason in the world. Yeah. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:41:42):

So, like,

I don't need to know your life story. I know that you are not your worst decisions. I know you've probably

Feel - Uncle P Richard. I feel like I am, I am Uncle, Uncle Richard. I go by Uncle Dick by, uh, my

nephews. Okay. Uh, uh, well, I, I, uh, because of Band of Brothers, I loved the, uh, Dick Winters. Okay.Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:25):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:42:25):

I h- held him and I still hold him to such high regard and everything he did with Easy Company during

World War II. But I grew up also with Dick Van Dyke. A lot of those older names.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:42:36):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (00:42:36):

So it's one of those things where, you know, people have names like Billy becomes Will or something.

And I wanted to change my name. And so I was like, I love Dick Van Dyke. Yeah. I love Dick Winters.

I'm like, I know that Dick is also a name for Richard, so we're going to go with that. And so it's really

helped me also. Like it helps me distinguish by who it is that wants to talk to me when I hear, I hear

Richard. Uh-huh. It's family, close family, or really maybe a super close friend of mine. When you're in

trouble. Yeah. Or I'm in trouble. If I hear, uh, Mr. Harper, that's, oh, that's from teaching days. Mm-hmm.

Ah, I need to be a teacher for a second. If I hear, hey Dick, that's a close college friend, someone that I've

(00:43:21):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:43:22):

it's been a name. Like who gets Billy from William? Right.

Yeah. Like it's just,

You never know.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:44:07):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:45:33):

Hit

Richard Harper (00:45:34):

Or miss. But with that being said, there are so many different avenues, so many different people, so many

different groups to work with, thank, that are amazing entities within themselves. So I understand them

not focusing entirely on me. But all the things that I've done with them so far moving forward have been

great, have been positive. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:45:55):

I,

Richard Harper (00:45:56):

I enjoy the longs. I respect the heck out of them. Yeah. But I know at the end of the day, it's also a

business. It's not a work with your friends day. Mm-hmm. And in order for this business to succeed, they

have to make strategies and priorities that may not always include me, who is always going to be one of

their top fans in my opinion. Front and center. Yeah. So with that being said - <laugh>. Um, we do not

have an official contract, an official contract yet, but we have had contracts in the past where I show up

and I do appearances with them. Uh, I've gone to Comic-Con for them. Oh,

absolutely -

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:39):

Amazing.

Richard Harper (00:46:40):

Love getting to do that. I've met the players, uh, quite a few of the players. Uh, not so much through

Kansas City Current, but through my main partnership who I would absolutely love to shout out right

now - Please do. Is, uh, United Way. Amazing.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:46:53):

Absolutely.

Sorry, not Sporting, that's the other soccer team. That's sporting. We are repping and wearing Unity.

Richard Harper (00:47:01):

We are repping and wearing United Way. And I absolutely love be - the more and more that I have gotten

to be involved with United Way, the more and more I want to be involved. And that's a hard thing when

I'm also trying to, I wanna try everything. I wanna do everything. Yep.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:47:18):

Uh,

Richard Harper (00:47:18):

But they've really helped me shape my ideas of what Tealman can potentially be and go,

"Can I make

Teal Man a full-time gig?" And they're, they are one of the first people, first groups that have say, said,

"We think it can be. Let's have a partnership. Let's have, you know, a contract where we can work out

how many times you're, you're utilized and things you can do.

meet so many amazing peoples, people, got to hear so many amazing stories. Yeah. Uh, w - the place

Richard Harper (00:47:58):

So United Way is, I, the best way I feel like describing them is they are a library of nonprofits. Okay. I

mean, they, there are better ways to describe them, but I feel like they are the librarians of nonprofit. And

they help funnel people who may not know how they, how to best help people - uh-huh. But know that

they want to. Whether that is financially, whether that is through volunteering, whether that is through

promotion,

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:26):

The - So it's multiple organizations, multiple nonprofits.

Richard Harper (00:48:31):

Is

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:31):

That right?

Richard Harper (00:48:32):

United Way is one entity. Right.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:34):

But

Richard Harper (00:48:35):

They themselves help funnel - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:37):

The

Richard Harper (00:48:38):

Monies and, not just monies, but monies and peoples and the things that it takes to work the nonprofits.

Mm-hmm. They help organize. Uh, they just had, uh, the Waymaker Awards, uh, which I got to go

present for. That's one of the things I get to do.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:52):

Amazing.

Richard Harper (00:48:53):

Uh, which one of the best, if not, one of the best award ceremonies I've ever got to go to. Yeah, I

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:48:59):

Need to hear more about that. So cool. I'm not familiar.

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:04):

But the

Richard Harper (00:49:04):

Waymaker Awards, I got to go and present for that. Uh, and they, uh, it's an award ceremony for the, the,

the companies who have, you know, done the most. The, the people who have gone out and ma - and it, it

helps highlight all the hard work that goes into what it takes to be a volunteer - uh-huh. To put the money

in, the time and the energy. You know, time, money, energy, the three things that nobody has all three of.

Yeah. United Way is, again, the librarians of going,

"Here's how we're going to put it all together and

make it work.

" Uniting

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:37):

It together. Uniting

Richard Harper (00:49:38):

Mindy Hargesheimer (00:49:51):

Sure to, like, link or tag that too. Yes. Um, okay, so what is your partnership with them? What do they

have you do? Uh,

Richard Harper (00:49:58):

We have a contract where, uh, I have so many, uh, uh, events that I am a part of and they can utilize me,

uh, for certain things. I can, you know, give a veto a yes or no, but I love everything they do. So I'm

absolutely like, yes, get me to more things. Anything you want me at, let me know. Um, but it's, uh, going

out to, uh, like, uh, I can't remember all the places, but like the, uh, drum farm, uh, and whether it's, uh,

helping plant trees, uh, seeing how, uh, they help out families, things like that. Or going and presenting to

kids. I've shown up, uh, as, uh, Teal Santa Claus, uh, and as Teal Man of Santa Claus and I've read to kids,

uh, visiting kids, helping set up, uh, holiday essentially shopping areas so, uh, parents can come in and

still get gifts for their children during those hard times of the year - Yeah.

(00:50:48):

And still have that holiday magic. Uh, so they've allowed me to help out and volunteer and still, uh, do a

also that would support me so I can go to every away match. I wanna be at every Kansas City current

event. Yeah. As well as all the K - CPKC events, whether that's supporting women's rugby, the lacrosse,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:30):

But

Richard Harper (01:00:30):

That doesn't mean you're not still a huge part of it. So -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:00:32):

No, I echo that. And when I had Dani on, we talked about that. I don't think a lot of people even realized

that she had a history playing soccer. And there's so much credibility there. Iceland. Iceland. Yeah. Yeah.

I, I mean, that's a big thing and she is, she's so smart to be a part of that. And she is literally gonna godown in history alongside, you know, so many other team members behind this for like changing history

for women's sports. So props to them. Have you met Jason Sudakis? Have you met any of the others that

have made their way in? That's gotta be up next too.

Richard Harper (01:01:02):

You did?

Richard Harper (01:01:10):

I didn't get to officially be Tealman on there. Uh, it was another thing that I, while I was still working

never heard before said,

"Hey, would you like to be an extra on this?" And I was like,

"Sure.

" Yeah. Of

course.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:01:27):

Uh-huh.

Richard Harper (01:01:28):

And then found out the day that they were shooting that I would've been great for, I missed out on. But

they did - Oh, so you didn't get to do it? I didn't get to do Tealman there, but I did get to show up as an

extra, uh, uh, I can't say what it is they were doing. Sure. But, uh, I did get to show up as an extra in the

background. So while I may not be tealed out for that, I did get to actually show up and be a background

actor on, uh, Ted Lasso. Uh, but I do think that they did get a picture of me or at least some action shots

of me during an actual game as Tealman. So - Oh, okay,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:01:59):

Good.

Richard Harper (01:01:59):

Well, it may not have been like actually officially shooting for Ted Lasso. Sure. I do think that they got

video footage of me as Teal Man for Ted Lasso, but we'll see. Hopefully in, in - Two

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:10):

Days. Two days.

Richard Harper (01:02:11):

I was gonna

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:11):

Say today's August 3rd. And it comes out August 5th, so that's gonna be - Yeah, so I'm very excitedRichard Harper (01:02:15):

For that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:02:15):

Exciting. Okay. Um, all right. Let's go to who is Richard? I wanna go, who is Richard when all of this is

off, daily life? What do we need to know about Richard Harper?

Richard Harper (01:02:28):

Richard is the same as everybody else, but his own individual too. Like, I have all the things that I love

and I have a lot of people that I care about, and I wanna make sure that I have a good life moving

forward. Essentially, what it comes down to is I try to be the best person I can. I try to learn and grow

from my experiences because I know I'm a hard-headed individual and I know I don't always learn things

on the first try, but I feel like the only way that we can truly grow as people is to have sometimes those

hard interactions, those hard experiences. The more you open yourself up to the world, the more you

realize, while every culture is different - uh-huh.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:13):

And

Richard Harper (01:03:13):

Everybody is different. At the same time, we're all the same. You know, well, while I didn't necessarily

growing up knowing what a hot comb smells like on a Sunday morning, I still love watching Dragon Ball

Z. And so, like, having those shared experiences with certain people of different cultures and different

backgrounds, knowing that deep down, we're still all the same. We want to be loved, we want to be cared

for, and we want to love, you know? So - uh-huh.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:03:43):

Just

Richard Harper (01:03:43):

Sharing those good life experiences that we can. Uh, I've been asked a couple times, uh, you know, like,

"Well, what do you wanna do?" I still necessarily wanna know what I wanna do in life when I grow up,

even though I'm al- almost 40. Sure. But I know that I want to be happy. And that's really all that it comes

down to. I know that there's a million life experiences out there - uh-huh. And I'm gonna experience as

many as, of them as I can, but as long as I can focus on being happy, the rest of it will work itself out.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:14):

Yeah. Are there any, as we talk about looking back and connecting the dots, any other major life

experiences that you think contributed, that we haven't talked about, that contribute to who you are today

as Richard?

Richard Harper (01:04:26):

As Richard? I mean, I don't knowMindy Hargesheimer (01:04:29):

What I can

Richard Harper (01:04:30):

And can't say.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:31):

You can say anything you want.

Richard Harper (01:04:32):

Uh, you know, I, I grew up with a lot of experiences that I, I, again, I go back to that I'm a very

sentimental guy. Yeah. I cry very easily. I've always been very emotional. I, I'm one of those people. I

didn't know that not everybody gets goosebumps when they hear music. Oh.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:47):

Which

Richard Harper (01:04:48):

Is

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:04:48):

Wild to me. Interesting fact. Yeah. Yeah. I totally do. Uh,

Richard Harper (01:04:50):

Yeah. Definitely in my club. It's because, uh, it's that connection that you have. Yeah. It's the, the

connection you have to your emotions. But, like, I'm a very sentimental person and I get very attached to

phrases and people. And then one thing that my father, bless his heart, rest in peace, always taught me

was, you know, you gotta endure the shit to enjoy the shine. Mm-hmm. You gotta have the bad in life to

enjoy the good. Like, you're gonna have - Absolutely. Bad days, you're gonna have worse days, and

there's gonna be one that's gonna be even worse later on. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:05:18):

Later

Richard Harper (01:05:18):

On in life though, you're gonna be able to look back on it and laugh on it. So just have some patience.

Mm-hmm. So you gotta endure the shit to enjoy the shine. Another one is patience. That's an, a big reason

why I have a beard, is it's a constant reminder of patience. I get, I get anxious. I get worked up. Mm-hmm.

I feel like I'm dying.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:05:37):

Sure. You're not alone in that, that's for sure. I'mRichard Harper (01:05:41):

Alone. So, you know, I, I, I've got the beard right there. Like, I don't know if this is gonna work out. I'm

really scared. I got the beard, you know? Yeah. The beard has taught me that you're gonna go through

some shit stages. Yep. You gotta have the beard. It's gonna look bad. Like right now, I'm not very happy

with it, the way it's growing right up here.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:05:57):

I would never know.

Richard Harper (01:05:57):

I'm letting it grow out and I'm working on more of it being not so much the point, but get a little bit more

fuller. So things that I'm learning as I'm growing the beard. But

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:05):

Also going back to like you being harder on yourself like all of us are, right? Yeah. Like no one would

ever know the difference of what you're even talking about. So yeah.

Richard Harper (01:06:12):

So just, you know, patience, kindness, and, and spreading as much love as I can because there is too much

hatred in the world and there's too many people. There's still learned unknown biases that I have - Sure.

That I

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:30):

Know

Richard Harper (01:06:30):

I've not even explored yet.

Richard Harper (01:06:32):

I still have to break down and explore why it is I feel that way. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:36):

Um -

Richard Harper (01:06:36):

I think

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:36):

That's everybody.Richard Harper (01:06:37):

But wanting to. I don't, I just, I want to be, I just want to be happy and I want to spread happiness. Yeah.

Is

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:45):

Really

Richard Harper (01:06:46):

What it comes down to.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:06:47):

I love that. Um, let's go back to the, what makes the Kansas City Current so distinct? The experience of a

Kansas City current game at the stadium. For people, because a lot of people still have not been. How do

you sum up the experience, not even just as you, but anybody going to this game in Kansas City with this

team and that whole experience?

Richard Harper (01:07:10):

It all just comes into community and buy-in.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:13):

Mm-hmm.

Richard Harper (01:07:14):

The fact that there's already, I mean, there's already been a community that's chomp - been chomping at

the bit to have some kind of women something to support. Mm-hmm. I feel like we've had an amazing

women's movement meant in the last 10, 20 - Big time. Five years. Yeah. Kudos. Uh, but the, the

community, the culture and the buy-in that you have and you walk in there, everybody's excited. I mean,

there's, you're gonna have grumpy people for every day of the week for any reason of the week. <laugh>

It gets hot. We get a little grumpy. We all wanna get in, get in the shade, get a drink. I understand that.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:07:50):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (01:07:50):

But 98% of the people there are there because we're all there to support women's sports. And the fact that

we have a place to do it, not a place that we are borrowing, a place that is our own. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:05):

That

Richard Harper (01:08:05):

Alone gives you that ownership. While you may not be the one that paid into it and bought it, it isownership of your city's team has invested in women's sports enough - uh-huh. To buy a stadium. Didn't

even ask the people. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:20):

This isn't

Richard Harper (01:08:21):

Funded. This-That's true. We're not gonna get into the chiefs and royals of all that. <laugh> Not funded

by the people. Funded by the owners. Yeah. Private. That, again, that gives you a huge investment of, oh,

you really care. It's not just you're here for the money. Mm-hmm. Obviously, they're here for a little bit of

money. Of course. That's a business. It is a business. Yeah. Capitalism has its finest. Mm-hmm. Anyways.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:44):

Yeah. <laugh>

Richard Harper (01:08:45):

I'll get off my soapbox. That'll

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:08:46):

Be three episode 3.0.

Richard Harper (01:08:48):

Yeah, yeah. Uh, but looking at all these things and it's all the communities coming together, you have, it's

not just, it's not McDonald's Subways. It, you have Lulus, you have High Hopes Ice Cream. You've got,

uh, the Z-Man Barbecue. Like you've got all these different things that are amazing, smaller vendors. And

it shows like, hey, we truly support the, the underdogs, the little guy, because they have just as much fight

and just as much want to drive desire as anybody else. They just need a platform and a chance to shine.

Mm-hmm. And I feel like CPKC has done that. It is a platform to say, here you go. For lack of a better

term, build, if you build it, they will come. Yeah. They built it. We've come.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:09:34):

Yeah. Yeah. How do you think that it, from your perspective, how do you think that that has impacted

Kansas City overall? Like, what do you think it's done to, um, people's love they already had for Kansas

City? Or what, what have you seen from your perspective that it's done to them? It has

Richard Harper (01:09:50):

Already increased th- that feeling of that Kansas City is the soccer capital of the world. Yeah.

Richard Harper (01:09:57):

May be a little bit biased on that, but - Sure. I, I love having that feeling and that mentality. Uh, but also it

feels like. It feels safe.Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:15):

Mm.

Richard Harper (01:10:17):

It feels like a place where you as an individual can come be your truest self and be seen and be

acknowledged and accepted and loved for who you are because you deserve the stage just as much as

anybody.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:34):

That's awesome. I love that. So true. So inclusive. So

Richard Harper (01:10:38):

Supportive. So hospitable. In a world, again, trying not to stay off the soapbox, but in a world that seems

to becoming more and more and more divided - Yeah. We have a place where inclusivity is not just

accepted. It is thriving. Yeah. It

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:54):

Is

Richard Harper (01:10:55):

Flourishing.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:10:55):

Yep.

Richard Harper (01:10:56):

Diversity, equity and inclusion, this shows that it's not only possible, but it is, I think, the humane and

correct way to do it. I

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:11:08):

Remembered something I wanted to say because you were talk - you've made such a good, passionate

point about we all know we're living in a chaotic, crazy world, but like you're doing something to bring

joy. You're proactively making the decision to do something that's whimsical and, you know, really fun. I

actually this morning had coffee with, um, a friend from Community Blood Center. And we were just,

just talking about, like, there's this massive need for blood donation right now. Yes. And it's a whole

thing. And so we're kind of talking about, like, what we can do together to help spread the word on that.

But we were also just talking about, like, the number of people who don't donate blood is quite a lot, and

for all kinds of reasons. But when you live in a world that you feel like is so negative and so crazy or

whatever, if you can remind yourself that you can make one decision, whether it's to show up and, you

know, be a positive light and spirit or to literally save a life, like, there are things that we can all be doing

that are proactively changing the world for the better.

(01:12:06):But so many of us, for whatever reason, just kind of sit back. Maybe it's fear, maybe it's the unknown, but

it's all these little things. Hot take.

Richard Harper (01:12:12):

Play a part.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:13):

Yeah. Hot take. It's

Richard Harper (01:12:14):

Social media. Sure. It is, it has shifted the focus of instead of us realizing that we are not always the main

character. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:22):

And

Richard Harper (01:12:22):

Has made us all be the focus of, no, I am the main character. Yeah. And while it is good for you to have a

platform and a place for your voice, you are not always the main character all the time. Yes. And not

enough people have had enough ID, id death, uh, ego death, all those things. We, we don't need to get into

psychology, but enough people have, we, we've just gotten sucked into I am the main character and

feeling - Exactly

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:46):

What we talked about. Gratification. There's such a, well, what's in it for me? And why? Why

Richard Harper (01:12:52):

Does there have to be

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:12:53):

Something in it for you? We have to mature out of that. You know, like, I was even talking about, like, I

didn't know much about blood donation when I was, you know, 25 or whatever. But, like, at the end of

the day, we've got to find the. Yeah. What's in it for me? It doesn't matter. Why? That's the point of life,

you know, like, overall. And that's so

Richard Harper (01:13:08):

Whatever.

In it for me. It's what can I do for them? Yeah.Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:11):

Yeah. I know.

Richard Harper (01:13:12):

Because, and it's just because of people that have done things for me in my times. It's because I've had

enough hard times - uh-huh. With enough people who had no reason to help me and nothing to gain.

Yeah. Who risked life and limbs sometimes to do everything they could to put me in a better position.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:13:30):

Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely.

Richard Harper (01:13:32):

That alone, it make, I mean, if that doesn't make you go, well, maybe, maybe I can pay it forward a little

bit. Like, it, it just, I don't know. But everybody is different. Everybody is unique and has different life

experiences. I wouldn't necessarily change anything about the way I was raised and how I grew up. With

that being said, I don't know if everybody would love being raised by parents who were in their 40s when

they were three and four - Sure. Having a hearing disability, having all. I have a thousand reasons why I

could be upset and hate the world - Sure. And just give up. But I also have 1,001 reasons why I could also

do it anyway. So - And

As a you - a, a young child, uh, as a toddler, about three years old, I think is where everything really

started connecting. Mm-hmm. Uh, parents were trying, you know, talking to me, yelling at me, and I

wasn't responding. And it's - Mm. He's not just ignoring us. Like, okay, he is a little stubborn, but this isn't

just him ignoring us. Yeah. So took me to the doctor and the doctor would talk to me. And then while he

would talk to me, I would respond as best as a three-year-old could. And then he'd, I would talk, he took

his clipboard and he put it over his mouth and I would stop responding.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:14:51):

Mm. And

Richard Harper (01:14:52):

Then he would take it away and I would start responding. Yeah. So, and then that was the diagnosis of

your son is clearly hard of hearing, but he's already reading lips at a young age. Mm-hmm. And that's how

he is responding is not by hearing, by looking. Yeah. Um, so from there, I, I don't remember what hospital

it is my mother's told me, but, uh, we came up to Kansas City, uh, and I had, uh, surgery, had tubes put in

my ears. Mm-hmm. Uh, I think somewhere by Westport. I think it was in Westport. Okay. Uh, anyway,

uh, had tubes put in my ears. That clearly didn't take. I'll put that anywhere. Mm-hmm. Um, but, uh, after

that, then I was fitted, uh, with hearing aids. Had the big old plastic molds made. Uh, all the grandparents

will probably have an understanding of what that whole process is.

(01:15:38):

Sure. Doing all the auditory tests. Uh, uh, but then had hearing aids. And I've had hearing aids pretty

much since I was, I wanna say, around four-ish to now. So I've grown up with hearing aids. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:15:50):

I,

Richard Harper (01:15:51):

I made that switch from, uh, uh, whatever it was over to digital. Uh, life's so much better now that we're

in the digital age with hearing and, and hearing devices have gotten so much better. But again, my, my

mother, my parents, uh, taught me that, you know, just because I'm different doesn't mean that I am less

than anybody else. Mm-hmm. I just made up a little bit differently. Um, so I, you know, I just, I always

viewed it as my, like I always explain to people hear - these hearing aids are just glasses for my ears. Yep.

So they bring my hearing up to 100%. But the best thing I like, I've been asked plenty of times before,

like, well, if you could, would you fix it? No.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:16:34):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (01:16:34):

I, again, I'm biased. I think everyone should have a hearing disability, or at least have hearing aids. Maybe

not fully deaf, but man, having a volume remote to the world has been so helpful. It's also been rough

sometimes, but - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:16:49):

That'd be a great way to be like, I'm sorry I can't. Oh,Page 59 of 87

Richard Harper (01:16:51):

That's gotten me out of so many social interactions as well. <laugh> Legitimately, that helps me too. But

like, the fire alarm going off, it's loud. I just turn, I, when I go hunting, I wear my hearing aid, just turn off

my hearing aids. Yeah. They, they become earplugs at that point. Um, but, like, being able to turn things

up, lower them, like, it really is a nice, uh, a nice ability that I had. Uh, back when, uh, analog, I always

forget that word. Back when I still had

(01:17:18):

Analog hearing aids, uh, it was a great feature that I had that even if I couldn't hear my phone, I could still

pick up the transmission of the phone going off. Yeah. It got a little frustrating, like, if I was taking a test

in class and somebody's phone was going off and I was hearing the - <laugh> But it was nice to kinda had

that. Uh, but then switching now over to the digital hearing aids, these are so much better, so much more

amazing. Uh, I had, like, four bands of different channels that you could pick to, like, high mi - essentially

high mids, lows, like

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:17:49):

Speakers.

Richard Harper (01:17:50):

Yeah. Uh, the more bands, the more depth, the more channels, the more things you can hear. Um,

essentially, it's like having a piano keyboard. I only had five keys for a little bit. Okay. Now that I'm

older, this has, let's call it 25 keys. So I can play and hear so much more now. Mm-hmm. Uh, but also,

like, they've adjusted things to where, uh, I can use. These are Bluetooth cables. So now I, I don't have -

Oh. I always struggle talking on the phone with my hearing aids because I either had to take off my

hearing aid to hold it up or hold it in a certain way or I'd be getting interference, but now I have

Bluetooth, so I can utilize that. Uh, the fact that these are so much more waterproof. I, as a kid, had a few

incidents and ruined a few $3,000 hearing aids -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:18:33):

Oh

Richard Harper (01:18:33):

Boy. By getting into the shower, jumping into the pool. So like- Like

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:18:36):

Losing your retainer. Exactly. Yeah. Throwing it away at lunch. <laugh>

Richard Harper (01:18:40):

Yes. I lost a hearing aid at a movie theater once because it was loud and I took them out and I was little

and I just forgot. Yeah. And

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:18:46):

So,Richard Harper (01:18:47):

Because everything was loud until we left and I was in the car and we were already, we was in Pittsburgh,

Kansas. We'd already almost dri- driven home. And I was like,

"I forgot my hearing aids.

long gone by then. Ugh. So, but yeah. And so I, I've grown up with them and I've, I, so I'm used to them.

They're just part of life. Yep. They're a

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:19:03):

Part

Richard Harper (01:19:03):

Of my natural life. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:19:04):

Okay. I was just curious. Yeah. God to know. Like I said, I literally can't see them anyway. Yeah. Your

painted, um, head. So yeah. But,

Richard Harper (01:19:10):

And it's, the crazy part is, even through that though, even with all my hearing disabilities, I still had that

passion for music because I just feel, I feel music more than I hear music. Clearly you listen to music, you

hear it. Yeah. But especially when it's a real true live music is about that feeling of feeling. When you

hear a true dominant chord in tune resonating through your body, it's just, whew, it's a whole other

experience. So

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:19:40):

At this stage of life, what is the most moving or impactful music that you like to listen to, that you feel the

most? Uh,

Richard Harper (01:19:49):

It's a lot of, a lot of Disney type music. Okay. Uh, like legitimately I, I had to catch myself because I was

on the way here and listening to some good music and I was like,

"Oh no, no stop, stop, stop, talk, top.

Don't cry.

" Uh - <laugh> Really? Oh yeah. Uh, just again, I'm a very emotional, sentimental guy. Yeah,

never changed that. Uh, so the, the song, uh, De La by, I think it's Jameson Clegg. Okay. Uh, it was

played in, uh, Georgia the Jungle. Yeah, yeah,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:20:15):

Yeah. I know what you're talking about.

Richard Harper (01:20:17):

Um, I love that song. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:20:18):

Uh,Richard Harper (01:20:19):

That, uh, you know, this, the, the feelings that he's talking about in the song really hits me. And then after

that, it was the, uh, the song from Brave. Mm-hmm. Uh, but anyway, just the, the, again, the lyrics and

the music all, like, uh, uh, as strong as a Caesar Stormy or as proud as an Eagle screen, like, uh, like, uh -

Like we need to figure out how to get you, like, a Disney partnership, too, maybe. Don't get me started

Richard Harper (01:20:45):

On that. I, have you, have you watched. We'll get onto that for second. Pixar for two seconds. Have you

watched Elemental?

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:20:51):

Uh, yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. So good. Yes. We, we,

Richard Harper (01:20:55):

Especially having two kids in the house. We watched movies - We watch a lot. That they've come out in

the last. A- and I'm saying this over encounter. Over every. As far as, like, hit you in your feels - Yeah.

Make you the moment where she turns around to her father and, oh. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:09):

Well, I thought, I also think, when I think of you, I would think, um, what is it, Inside Out? I love

Richard Harper (01:21:16):

Inside Out.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:16):

That's a great one too.

Richard Harper (01:21:18):

Especially

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:19):

All the

Richard Harper (01:21:19):

Feelings. <laugh> Disney's gotten so good the last. Anyway, it has helped. So many children become so

much more psychologically, uh, uh, literate and - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:31):

Understanding their emotions and because so many kids just shut down because - uh-huh. Uh, and

anyway, that's soapboxes. No, that's really - We could talk about multiple things, but yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:21:42):

Yeah, I was gonna say that's really important to me too, because, like, the whole world of, like, health and

wellness, um, there's so many people I wanna bring on this podcast to talk about that, because I listen to

so many that have helped me, and there's so many people here in KC that can, that are accessible to

people, um, you know, for a variety of things that - uh-huh. I wanna keep bringing that topic up, because

that's really important to me, too, so I love that. Okay, when you leave here - uh-huh. And let's, or

whenever you go home, h - walk me through how long this takes to.

Richard Harper (01:22:08):

Gotcha. Uh, quick answer is about 30 minutes. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:13):

It

Richard Harper (01:22:13):

Takes me longer to put everything on than it does check it off. Sure. So, when I get, again, learned

experiences, I've gone through a few bottles of Drano. Okay.

(01:22:22):

You do not put this over the sink. You do not shake it out. You do not do it in the, in the shower. You get

home, you stand over a big trash can because there's gonna be some flingage. Mm-hmm. And you shake

out as much as you can. Yeah. And you get, you can get almost all of it, but there's still, you know, the

good hard parts that are, the hard to reach places. And you get as much of the loose glitter out as you can.

Uh-huh. Uh, from there, uh, I don't think we ever finished talking about how I put everything on. Did we

not?

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:50):

Were we squirreling it? I don't think we did. We

Richard Harper (01:22:51):

Did.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:22:52):

We squirred it. Let's do that then.

Richard Harper (01:22:54):

So, going back, putting everything on. So I start with the, uh, oh. I start with the primer. Yeah. Uh, the,

and from Elf, and I go from there, and I do the paint, uh, the beard, paint, beard. Uh, and then I do. We

did talk about how I do the binder, the gel.Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:11):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (01:23:12):

Thick glitter, fine glitter. I do the eyebrows. When I'm done with everything now, after I've put everything

on - uh-huh.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:26):

Eight. Okay.

Richard Harper (01:23:26):

Uh, the swab hairspray, and that's essentially a setting spray - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:30):

For

Richard Harper (01:23:30):

The beard and all the glitter as one last touch. And then I now have, because I'm still, I'm learning. Every

time I try to do better - uh-huh. I use a setting powder that I use as well that's called, uh, it's, it's twilight,

but it's also got some glitter in it too. I didn't use it for today, but for the games, it also

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:47):

Adds.

Richard Harper (01:23:48):

So it's just the whole thing is glittery. Oh my

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:50):

Gosh. Have you ever done a Get Ready with Me? I've done

A couple

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:23:53):

Okay.

Richard Harper (01:23:57):

I'm starting to do that, like, on TikTok and Instagram, figuring out that old thing, so yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:01):

Yeah. Okay. Um, and then did, did we finish also talking about the dream partnerships that you. We

talked about Amazon. Did you have another point?

Richard Harper (01:24:10):

I don't think we finished all of them, but to finish taking it off. Oh. Yeah,

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:13):

Here we go again. Let's finish off.

Richard Harper (01:24:15):

Take it off. Go home, uh, and shake it all off over a trash can. And then, uh, everything else is just water

soggy below. Yeah. So I'm able to just stand under the shower, wash it all off. Like, every now and then,

the hard to read around the nose, the neck. Sure. So, like, I'll have to use maybe, like, some Don disc

soap. Yeah. I'll be like, I like to say if it's good enough for Ducky's, it's good enough for me. Aw. Um, but

-

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:36):

Everybody knows that reference.

Richard Harper (01:24:37):

But I, uh, I like to use that. I know, I love it. Uh, I, uh, I, I'll use that, but for the most part, it all comes off.

I have started using, like, an airbrushing technique to experiment on some of the hotter gains. Uh-huh. It's

hard to get the correct color, and it's just a little bit different. So I'm still experimenting that, but as far as

my regular paint, about 30 minutes in the shower, and I'm all done.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:24:58):Have you ever been at a game and it started sweating? Oh,

Richard Harper (01:25:00):

All the time. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:25:01):

<laugh>

Richard Harper (01:25:02):

So with the, with the new, uh, airspray, uh, that I've been using, I turn green though. Oh, interesting. With

this, with this, when I start to sweat, I become paler and it just kinda all filters. And I kinda look like a, an

Easter egg a little bit. That's funny. Kinda like modeled and it blended, but - <laugh>. Uh, but yeah, it

just, it, and in a way though, it's kind of like a ba - I, I used to get upset about it. I'm like,

"Oh, it's

messing, my makeup's winning. I don't look as good, but I kinda wear it like a badge of honor now.

"

Yeah. Like, it was a hot game. I was really excited. We did, like, oh, all that's really left is around my

eyes. Man, I was really getting in it. So in it. Yeah. Exactly. So.

Richard Harper (01:26:31):

To.okay. So I lived by, that was a big seller, is when Core was first being built. We moved in before they

were even finished. Okay.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:26:38):

Uh,

Richard Harper (01:26:39):

But it was just that big selling point of being right next to the, uh, stadium. Yeah. So I did live at Core for

a year and a half. A little more than a year and a half. Uh, but an amazing, amazing, uh, complex.

Eventually though, as they were building that new set in front of me - uh-huh. I was like,

"I don't wanna

pay more.

" Yeah. Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:26:57):

Uh, because

Richard Harper (01:26:58):

Every year rank goes up. Of course. I was like,

"I don't wanna pay more and lose my view.

" So I was like,

"I'll hopefully come back sometime, but let's see what else Kansas City has to offer.

" And I'm glad I've

moved because I've experienced more of Kansas City. Yeah. Yeah. Now these days though, I, I've moved

down to Fountain View on the Plaza. Oh, okay. Uh, gorgeous area. I abs - it's, I've always, I grew up in

downtown Fort Scott. I've grown up with walking as a kid. Yeah, I love that. I love having a walkable

environment. Yeah. And this is what I've wanted. I lived in the downtown area enough. I used to live by

the Qua for a while. Mm-hmm. And it's nice. I like that vibe, but this is everything I want.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:27:32):I lived on the Plaza right after I graduated from KU, a building called Lacarno, and it's just on the other

side of the river, and I loved that. I ended up moving to Chicago. Like

Richard Harper (01:27:41):

Richard Harper (01:27:54):

That anymore.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:27:54):

Yeah, maybe it's something different. But I loved that. And then moved to Chicago, walked everywhere,

clearly. Then we decided to move here. We moved close to family. Mm-hmm. So we're way out south. I

know OP cannot walk anywhere. Can't walk anywhere. That's the one sacrifice we had to make - Yeah.

Because we love where we live. Um, but I do appreciate that. And like, yeah, I'm with you there. Oh, I,

Richard Harper (01:28:12):

See, I would love that too as the, or I, I love the walkability. Being at like - Yeah. The, uh, the museums

right there, so I can go to Nelson Atkins. So many

Things. Uh,Richard Harper (01:28:21):

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:28:33):

Was asking about, um, the riverfront because I didn't know if you had any, like. I, I know they're building

I, I will go ahead and say, get in the comments if you need to. I understand the frustration in losing a little

bit of green space. Sure. A lot of people have a lot of good memories about that down there. Mm-hmm.

With that being said, I feel like Kansas Ci - I feel like the port, Kansas, what, Port Authority, whatever it

is. Yeah. But the, the riverfront has done a great job of preserving a lot of green space, re-utilizing it a

little bit better - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:29:09):

And

Richard Harper (01:29:10):

Bringing more people to it. Mm-hmm.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:29:12):

So

Richard Harper (01:29:13):

Instead of just being kind of, oh, a pretty big open park, like, just an open park with not a lot to do,

they've revamped it. They've moved the volleyball pits. Oh, yeah. Uh, they moved those down actually

right next to where the, uh, rail stop is now. Okay. Uh, so they've, uh, uh, two birds and one stone is down

there now. I have yet to actually officially go there, but I've walked by it seen enough. It's a gorgeousvenue. It looks like it. Uh, looks like everybody's having a great time there. Uh, all the shops that they're

building up down there, there's gonna be more apartments. So it's gonna be an amazing - Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:29:43):

Walkable

Richard Harper (01:29:44):

something like a - Yeah. A well-known little - Yeah. Community right there that includes the stadium.

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:29:55):

Um, but the

Richard Harper (01:29:55):

Great thing is having that rail car though, it makes it accessible to. From almost anywhere as long as you

can get within five blocks of a rail car. So- So true.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:30:05):

I, if I was in a different stage of life, I've always said I would wanna live in the river market or just down

in that vicinity.

Richard Harper (01:30:10):

River market too. And see, I, I. Yeah, living in the area, the river market area is such a, especially the

Okay. Getting music finalized this week for it, actually today for it.

(01:31:23):

Amazing. Uh, and then, uh, so I love music, but also I, I'm big into games. I, I'm a big D&D player. Okay.

Uh, I'm a, uh, a DM, a GM myself. Uh, but right now I'm just playing a character. But I love, I love

community. I love people. I just, I love love and I want people to. When it comes down to Teal is an

embodiment of an anagram that I feel like as a teacher works out best for me. Mm-hmm. Uh, is, you

know, T-E-A-L. T stands for trust. When you see me and I see you, I know I'm an outla - an outrageous,

loud character. I know sometimes I can be scary for some people. I have scared a few people. <laugh>

Um, but when you see me, T stands for trust. You should be, you should trust me to feel safe around me.

(01:32:09):

That you don't need to worry about anything. I'm going to treat you with di- dignity and respect. E stands

for entertainment. I think that's pretty self-explanatory. Yeah. Exciting, entertainment, education. A lot of

things we could put in there. A stands for accepting, kind of goes back to that T. Uh, I want anybody that

walks next to me from any walk of life. I don't care what

(01:32:32):

Culture you're from, what background you have, you know, what it is about yourself that makes you

maybe different from everybody else. Mm-hmm. I want you to feel accepted by me because everybody is

a unique individual with their own life choices and decisions and things that have made them who they

Richard Harper (01:36:22):

Um, uh, I, there's three or four. I, I can't off the top of my head remember. Sure. Uh, but on the, that you

take on the rail - Yeah. Before you go over the bridge. It, it's a, it's a black, uh, building. Mm-hmm. On

the right hand side. Oh my gosh, there's, uh, uh, the, but, uh, the Regers Restaurant. I haven't gone there.

There's so many -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:36:41):

Yep.Richard Harper (01:36:41):

So many amazing places that I still haven't gone. I have had the opportunity to do a lot of great things, but

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:36:46):

Yes.

Richard Harper (01:36:46):

Yeah.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:36:47):

Okay. Back to the Broadway show, is there a certain show that you'd wanna see in sit front and center? Or

you just, like, do you wanna go to the music hall or do you wanna go to Kaufman? Or, like, what do you

Richard Harper (01:36:55):

Have in mind? Yes, yes, yes. Uh, my favorite. Let's just go with some of my favorites. Yeah. My favorite

ballet is, uh, again, sentimental, is The Nutcracker. Yeah. It's one of the first things that really got, set it

all off. Um, I, so I love Ballet. I love Tap. I wish I could see more tap, but it's such a dying art, I feel like.

Yeah. It's hard to see it. Uh, but, uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:37:15):

Have you seen The Nutcracker here?

Richard Harper (01:37:16):

Yes.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:37:17):

Okay.

Richard Harper (01:37:17):

I, I drug my wife to it one year, but I try to go at least once every five years. I- It's a must. I love it. Yeah.

I absolutely love it. Uh, well, because being hearing impaired, there was no words. You didn't have to

worry. The story is what you got to see. That's true. And you basically get to make your own story if you

want to. Yeah. Uh, but so, uh, yeah, getting to watch, uh, ballet, getting to watch KC Symphony

Orchestra play. Yeah. Oh, I would love to watch, like, uh, uh, them playing along live with a movie. I

haven't got to do that

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:37:44):

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:37:52):

Richard Harper (01:37:55):

Pocus. Oh.

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:37:56):

Yeah.

Richard Harper (01:37:56):

But yes, so I would love to do that. Okay. Uh, my favorite. Well, right now, my favorite show is Six,

which is weird. It's just a one act show, but

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:38:04):

So

Richard Harper (01:38:05):

Good. I

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:38:05):

Don't even know what that is. You

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:38:19):

Okay.

Richard Harper (01:38:19):

It is amazing. Six, one of the best musicals I've. Uh, Beetlejuice, uh, is great. Uh, uh, Falsettos, uh, but

that's more like an operata. The whole thing is singing, but, uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:38:29):

Yeah. Are you into, like, Phantom of the Opera and stuff like that?

Richard Harper (01:38:32):

Oh, yeah. Okay. Phantom of the Opera and Rent were the two things that got me into theater as far as,

like, the, the big shows that, that got me there.

Be sleeping in for me too.

Richard Harper (01:39:09):

Um, I'm going to get up, have a cinnamon raisin bagel, probably, or an egg sandwich, something like that,

but a kind of, some kind of hearty breakfast. Delicious. And then I'm going to take my dog on a walk. Uh,

Diego full-blooded Sheba, you know? I love him with all my heart. Bless his soul. So cute. Uh, go on. I

should

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:39:28):

Have told you to bring your dog today. Real dog friendly around here.

Richard Harper (01:39:31):

Oh. He, uh, such. He is, he is the dumbest, smartest dog I've ever had. Aw. <laugh> Um, but I love him

so much. Uh, I don't understand how he can be so smart and so. But kids are that way too. I don'

understand how he can be so smart and so stupid at the same time. <laugh> But, uh -

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:39:48):

Maybe he's, he's not fully developed in the pencil.

Richard Harper (01:39:50):

But take him on, uh, uh, an hour long walk usually, because that's just a good, about a good hour long

walk. Uh, I like to go walk by the, uh, the Kaufman Memorial Center. Gar, the Memorial Garden's

Mindy Hargesheimer (01:40:03):

of holics out there. I'm pretty sure I'm a foodaholic. Yeah, that's fair. That's a good halic to do. I'll try

anything once, twice if I like it. Yeah. <laugh> Uh, but German food's just so rich and so filling and just a

lot of heavy stuff. Yeah. Um, but no, I would go, I would go to Milwaukee Delicatessen and get a, a huge,

uh, slice and a brot. And then from there, I would go right next door, visit my, my, my girlfriends over at
